Stable is DayZ’s normal public branch; Experimental is a separate testing branch for upcoming features, mechanics and patches. They are isolated: an Experimental client can connect only to Experimental servers, a Stable client only to Stable servers, and character progress does not move between the two.
That separation affects more than the game launcher. It determines which players you can meet, which server software you install, which Steam app ID you use and how much bug risk you accept. The practical choice is simple: use Stable for a dependable persistent character, or use Experimental when you specifically want to test changes before they reach the main game.

“Experimental” does not mean a private preview or a different game. It is a public branch with its own clients, servers and saves. A server’s branch is part of its compatibility identity, just like its address and password.
What the two branches are for
Stable: the dependable default
Stable is the build installed for ordinary DayZ play unless you deliberately opt into a beta branch. It is the sensible choice when you are maintaining a long-running character, coordinating a group that wants predictable access, or operating a public server for players who have not changed their Steam settings.

Stable still receives patches and can have bugs. The distinction is that it is the general-release branch rather than the test track. Choosing Stable avoids deliberately opting into unfinished changes and keeps you in the largest, default player pool supported by the normal installation.
Experimental: an early look with real risk
Experimental exposes new features, mechanics and patches before they are promoted to Stable. That makes it useful for players who want to learn a change early, for server administrators checking whether a planned update works, and for people willing to report problems or tolerate resets and instability.

The trade-off is explicit: Experimental can contain game-breaking bugs, poor performance and unfinished features. Treat anything you do there as testing rather than a guaranteed long-term progression path. Its separate progression is not a backup copy of your Stable survivor.
Branch isolation: clients, servers and progress
Why an Experimental client cannot join a Stable server
DayZ’s branches use separate server populations. A server accepts clients from its own branch, so matching the server’s address is not enough. If the server is Experimental, every connecting player needs the Experimental client; if it is Stable, every connecting player needs Stable.
This is why a branch mismatch can look like a connection failure even when the server is online. The server may be reachable, but the client and server are speaking different branch builds. Switching the client to the branch named by the server is the first compatibility check.
Why friends may disappear from the server list
Players on Experimental meet other Experimental players, while Stable players meet Stable players. A friend who “vanished” from a familiar server may simply have opted into the other branch. Both of you must be on the same branch to see the same branch-specific servers and play together.

Why progress does not carry over
Progress made on Experimental does not transfer to Stable, and Stable progress does not transfer to Experimental. Plan for two independent play histories. Items, locations, bases and other character progress you create on one branch should not be treated as available on the other.
For groups, decide the branch before starting a shared run. Moving one member to Experimental does not move the group’s Stable characters or make a Stable server accept that member.
How to switch the DayZ client in Steam
You can change the branch from DayZ’s Steam properties. The labels below describe the standard desktop Steam path.
- Open Steam and go to your Library.
- Right-click DayZ in the game list and select Properties.
- Open the BETAs tab.
- Use the beta-branch dropdown to select the Experimental entry when you want the test branch.
- Wait for Steam to apply the selection and download or update the branch files before launching DayZ.
- To return to the normal release, open the same dropdown and choose
NONE - Opt out of all beta programs.
Do not launch until Steam has finished the branch change. The game may need to update a substantial set of files, and starting while the update is pending can leave you on the previous build or produce a version mismatch with the server you intend to join.
Switching without losing the other branch’s progress
Changing the Steam beta selection does not merge the branches. Your Stable and Experimental experiences remain separate, but the branch you leave will not be available until you switch back and let Steam update again. Keep that delay in mind when planning a session with friends.
Returning to Stable
Use the same Properties → BETAs route and select NONE - Opt out of all beta programs. Let Steam complete the resulting update, then connect only to Stable servers. If a server still rejects the client, verify that the server operator has not left it on Experimental.

DayZ dedicated-server app IDs
The client and dedicated server are different Steam applications. The DayZ client’s app ID is 221100; it is not the app ID used to install a dedicated server.

Installing the wrong app ID creates a branch mismatch even if the machine, port and configuration are otherwise correct. Record the intended branch beside the app ID in your deployment notes so an update or rebuild does not silently install the other server.

Installing the Experimental dedicated server with SteamCMD
The Bohemia community Linux hosting guide gives this example for the Experimental server:
steamcmd +force_install_dir ~/servers/dayz-server/ +login your_login +app_update 1042420 +quitThe important branch-specific value is +app_update 1042420. For a Stable server, use the Stable dedicated-server app ID, 223350, in the update command instead. The client app ID 221100 does not belong in a dedicated-server installation command.
What to verify after installation
- App ID: Confirm that the installed server came from
223350for Stable or1042420for Experimental. - Client branch: Test with a client on the matching Steam branch, not merely with whichever client is already installed.
- Update target: Keep the same app ID in future SteamCMD updates; changing it changes the branch.
- Player instructions: Tell users which branch is required before giving them the server address.
Linux hosting: an important qualification
Linux availability has differed by branch and by patch, and public guidance is not fully consistent. A third-party hosting README noted that a Stable Linux binary was missing as of May 2022, but that observation is dated and should not be treated as a current guarantee.
Before committing to a Linux deployment, verify the current files and branch status in SteamDB or in a current Bohemia announcement. Check the exact patch you plan to run: availability can change when the game and server are updated. Do not infer that because one branch has a Linux build, the other branch necessarily has one at the same time.

If your hosting plan depends on Linux, make this verification before opening the server to players. A successful SteamCMD download of an app does not by itself prove that the desired native server binary is available for your operating system or patch.
SteamCMD login considerations
One third-party guide reports that anonymous SteamCMD login may not work for the DayZ server and that a Steam account owning DayZ may be required. That requirement was not confirmed against an official source here, so treat it as a deployment possibility rather than a universal rule.
If an anonymous login fails, test with an account that owns DayZ and follow SteamCMD’s current authentication prompts. Keep credentials out of shared scripts and service logs. The practical point is to diagnose authentication separately from branch selection: a login error occurs before the server files can be downloaded, while a branch mismatch appears when a client tries to connect.

Choose Stable when
- Your priority is reliable everyday play rather than early access to changes.
- Your group wants one predictable server and does not want to coordinate beta settings.
- You are preserving a long-running character or base and do not want a separate test progression.
- You are hosting for a broad audience that expects the default Steam installation.
Choose Experimental when
- You want to experience new mechanics or patches before they reach Stable.
- You accept game-breaking bugs, performance problems and unfinished features.
- Everyone in your group can switch to Experimental and remain there for the session.
- You are validating a server update and can tolerate branch-specific troubleshooting.
Run both branches?
Running both is possible only as two separate server installations and populations. Use app ID 223350 for Stable and 1042420 for Experimental, keep their data and service definitions clearly separated, and label each server so players do not confuse them. Players still need the corresponding client branch for each server; a dual-server setup does not remove the client-side separation.
Troubleshooting branch and server problems
“The server is online, but I cannot join”
- Ask the operator which branch the server uses.
- Check your DayZ setting at Properties → BETAs.
- Switch to the matching branch and wait for Steam to finish updating.
- Try again only after the client has fully restarted on that branch.
If the branches match and the problem remains, investigate ordinary connectivity, server configuration and authentication issues separately. Do not treat a general connection error as proof that the server is offline.
“My friend cannot see the server”
Confirm that both of you are on the same branch. A Stable client will not share the Experimental server population, and vice versa. Also confirm that the server operator installed the intended dedicated-server app ID rather than the other branch.

“My character or gear is missing after switching”
Check whether you changed branches. Progress is isolated, so a character created on Experimental is not expected to appear in Stable. Switch back to the branch where that progress was made; do not create a new Stable or Experimental character while trying to recover the original branch’s data.

Verify current Linux support for that branch and patch. Historical documentation has reported missing binaries for at least one branch, and branch availability can change. Also confirm that you installed the dedicated-server app ID, not client app 221100, and that the SteamCMD login completed successfully.
Branch-management checklist for server operators
- Write “Stable” or “Experimental” in the server name and administration notes.
- Use
223350for Stable or1042420for Experimental. - Tell players the required client branch before publishing the address.
- Test a connection with a client explicitly set to that branch.
- Keep branch data and service paths distinct if operating both versions.
- Recheck Linux binary availability after major patches rather than relying on an old hosting note.
- Document whether SteamCMD required an authenticated DayZ-owning account in your environment.
Does Experimental eventually become Stable?
Experimental is where new features, mechanics and patches appear before Stable. That makes it a staging branch, not a promise that every experiment will arrive unchanged or on a particular schedule. No published release cadence or population figures are established here, so decisions should be based on the branch’s purpose and your tolerance for instability rather than on a timetable.
