If your Don’t Starve Together server reports that mods are out of date, first update the game and dedicated-server installation, then refresh the server’s Workshop downloads and check that it is loading the files you updated. A hosted game and a dedicated server handle mods differently: hosted games use the in-game Mods tab, while dedicated servers need Workshop IDs and, when applicable, configuration files in each shard directory.

Why a DST server says its mods are out of date
The message does not, by itself, tell you whether the problem is an old mod download, a stale server installation, or a mismatch between the files you updated and the files the server actually loads. Treat it as a diagnostic clue, not proof that every mod is broken.

Update the game before troubleshooting mods
- Update Don’t Starve Together on the client you use to test the server.
- Update the dedicated-server installation using the update method for your server setup or management tool.
- Restart the updated server before changing individual mods, then check whether the warning remains.
Updating first helps distinguish an outdated game or server installation from a problem with a particular mod. The available guidance does not establish a universal command for updating every dedicated-server setup, so use the procedure that applies to your installation rather than copying a command for a different platform or manager.

Check whether the mod is server-side or client-side
In Klei’s Host Game flow, the Mods tab separates mods into Server and Client categories. That distinction determines where the mod needs to be installed: a server mod must be present on the server, while a client-only mod must be installed for the player who needs it. A mod intended for one side will not be made available to the other simply by enabling it in the wrong place.
For a hosted game
- Subscribe to the chosen mod through the Steam Workshop.
- Launch DST and open Host Game > Create New World > Mods.
- Find the mod in the appropriate Server or Client category and enable it.
This is Klei’s documented flow for enabling Workshop mods in a hosted game. It is not the same as refreshing mod downloads for a separately installed dedicated server.

For a dedicated server
Confirm that a server-side mod is listed in the dedicated server’s mod setup and that its configuration is in the server’s active cluster and shard directories. If the mod is client-only, the player who needs it should install it on their own client; putting it on the dedicated server is not a substitute.
Refresh Workshop mods on a dedicated server
A dedicated server’s Workshop downloads are managed through its server files, not by enabling a mod in the in-game Host Game screen. Klei forum guidance and LinuxGSM’s DST instructions describe using Workshop IDs in dedicated_server_mods_setup.lua, followed by the server-management tool’s mod update or install step.

- Open
dedicated_server_mods_setup.luafor the dedicated-server installation you intend to run. - Make sure the Workshop ID for each required server mod is listed in that file. Use the ID for the intended Workshop item; do not substitute a mod name if the setup expects an ID.
- Run the update/install step provided by your server-management tool so it downloads the listed mods. LinuxGSM documents this workflow for its DST server setup.
- If the cluster uses Master and Caves shards, copy the generated
modoverrides.luainto both the Master and Caves shard directories, as directed in the LinuxGSM instructions. - Restart the server after the download and configuration changes, then test the connection again.
The exact command and file locations depend on the server manager and installation layout; the documented approach establishes the files and workflow, not one command that is valid everywhere. Manual administrators can maintain the Lua configuration files directly, while a manager such as LinuxGSM can run the update/install workflow.
Verify the server is loading the files you updated
Refreshing a Workshop download will not help if the server searches a different location. Klei’s command-line guide documents a setting that changes where the server looks for mods. Check the launch configuration together with the active cluster and shard directories, and confirm that they point to the same installation and configuration files you just updated.

- Confirm the server process is launched from the installation whose
dedicated_server_mods_setup.luayou edited. - Confirm that the cluster directory in use contains the expected configuration.
- When Master and Caves are enabled, check the mod configuration in each shard directory.
- Check the launch arguments and mod search-path setting against the location of the downloaded files.
If the server is still loading from a different path, updating another copy of the mod can leave the active copy unchanged. Correct the path or update the files in the location the running server actually uses.

If the game and server are current, the mod is in the right place, and the server is looking at the intended files, a clean Workshop reinstall is a reasonable next step. Klei’s troubleshooting guidance for an outdated or broken mod says to remove its mod files, unsubscribe from the affected Workshop mod, and then subscribe again to download a clean copy.

- Stop the server before removing files it may be using.
- Delete the relevant mod files from
steamappscommonDon't Starve Togethermods, following Klei’s troubleshooting guidance. - Unsubscribe from the affected mod in the Workshop.
- Subscribe again so a clean copy is downloaded.
- Run the dedicated-server mod update/install workflow again, then restart and test.
Take care to remove the affected mod’s files, not unrelated server data or world saves. If the server manager uses a different installation location, make sure the cleanup and subsequent download target the files that installation uses.
Choose the update path that matches your setup

Isolate a mod that still causes trouble
If the warning returns after the server and downloads are refreshed, change one thing at a time. Disable the suspected mod, verify whether it is server-side or client-side, and inspect the server logs before enabling it again. This makes it easier to tell whether the issue follows one mod or remains when that mod is removed; changing several mods at once makes the result harder to interpret.
Klei Support states, “All mods are to be used at your own risk!” Its support page was updated July 15, 2026. That warning is a useful reason to treat a single troublesome mod as a possible cause rather than assuming the game itself is at fault.
