The fastest way to improve Drupal on a VPS is to measure first, then fix the layer that is actually limiting requests. Record separate results for anonymous cached pages, anonymous uncached pages, and authenticated pages; check cache HIT/MISS status, PHP-FPM saturation, database latency, and resource pressure before changing settings. Keep Drupal’s production caches enabled, run a supported PHP release with OPcache, and only then tune PHP-FPM, database queries, storage, and delivery.

Redis or Memcached, OPcache, Varnish or another reverse proxy, and a CDN are complementary tools rather than interchangeable “speed switches.” Each works at a different layer and introduces its own invalidation, memory, monitoring, and failure concerns. The workflow below shows how to choose them safely on a VPS without sacrificing personalized-content correctness.

Start with a baseline you can reproduce

Do not begin by copying a “high-performance” VPS configuration. Drupal response time changes with cache state, sessions, cache contexts, invalidation, module behavior, database workload, and traffic mix. A single synthetic request to one page cannot represent those conditions.

Record the application and platform

Write down the Drupal core version, PHP version, enabled extensions, web server, database engine and version, operating-system release, VPS CPU and memory allocation, storage type, and whether a CDN or reverse proxy is already in front of the origin. Note the active theme, major contributed modules, and whether the site is mostly editorial, commerce, community, or another workload. These details make later comparisons meaningful and expose unsupported software before tuning begins.

Drupal’s web-server requirements guidance, updated 13 September 2026, says to check the latest supported PHP version. Treat that page as the authority for support rather than assuming that the newest PHP release is automatically compatible with every module. Patch Drupal, PHP, the operating system, and extensions before performance work; security updates and performance changes are safer when the platform is current.

Measure three request classes

Run the same test plan for:

  • Anonymous, warm-cache requests: a normal visitor requesting a page that has already been generated and cached.
  • Anonymous, cold or uncached requests: a page after cache clear or an intentionally bypassed cache, showing the cost of PHP and database work.
  • Authenticated or personalized requests: requests carrying a session or user-specific cache contexts, which often cannot share the anonymous page cache.

For each class, capture median and tail response time (for example, a high percentile), time to first byte, HTTP status, cache HIT/MISS headers, and the number of requests in the test. Keep the test location, protocol, concurrency, URL set, and warm-up period identical between runs. Report the test method with any before-and-after result; otherwise the figures cannot be reproduced.

Watch the origin while testing

Collect PHP-FPM active and idle workers, queue time, and process saturation; database latency, slow-query records, connections, and lock waits; CPU, memory, swap, disk I/O, and network utilization. A faster median with a growing tail or a full swap device is not an improvement. Origin traffic is also important: a CDN or reverse proxy may reduce requests reaching the VPS even when application execution time is unchanged.

Repeat tests with warm and cold caches after every material change. Change one layer at a time and keep a rollback command or configuration copy for each change. This isolates causality and prevents a cache adjustment from being mistaken for a PHP or database improvement.

Verify the VPS platform before tuning Drupal

Use a supported web stack

Confirm that the selected PHP release, web server, database, and required extensions are supported by the Drupal version in production. Nginx is commonly selected when high concurrency, performance, and low memory use are priorities, but the label alone does not make a site faster; configuration and workload determine the result. Apache can also serve Drupal effectively when correctly configured. Choose based on support, team skills, and measured behavior.

Apply operating-system and package updates during a controlled maintenance window. Restart services deliberately and check logs after each restart. Keep the web user able to read the Drupal codebase and able to write sites/default/files, which stores uploads and generated assets. Incorrect ownership or permissions can turn image-style generation, CSS/JavaScript aggregation, or cache rebuilds into slow failures and repeated retries.

Separate development settings from production

Disable development Twig debugging, verbose error output, and other development-caching settings in production. These options add template and diagnostic work and can prevent normal reuse of compiled or cached output. Keep a documented, reversible procedure for enabling them temporarily when diagnosing a problem.

Make Drupal’s built-in caches do the main work

Drupal first performs calculations and database retrieval for a request, then can reuse intermediate or final output on compatible requests. Drupal’s User Guide explains: “There are several ways that page load time can be sped up, including installing software on the server.” Server software helps, but disabling Drupal’s own caches removes the most direct savings.

Enable Internal Page Cache and Dynamic Page Cache

In production, enable both Drupal core’s Internal Page Cache and Dynamic Page Cache. Internal Page Cache is designed primarily for anonymous responses. Dynamic Page Cache can reuse render output across more request types while respecting cache metadata. Verify the status in the performance configuration screen and confirm that a normal anonymous request produces an x-drupal-cache HIT after the first request. A MISS on the first request is expected; repeated MISS responses require investigation.

Set cache lifetimes that match publishing needs

Configure a sensible browser and proxy max-age for content that can be reused. A news site that must show edits quickly needs a shorter lifetime or reliable invalidation; a relatively static archive can tolerate longer reuse. Do not set a long lifetime merely to improve a synthetic score. Publishing, editing, unpublishing, permission changes, and taxonomy updates must invalidate every affected response.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Protect personalization with cache contexts

Cache contexts describe the request properties that change output, such as user, language, route, permissions, or URL parameters. Sessions and user-specific contexts can bypass or vary a cache entry. Never strip a context just to increase the HIT rate: doing so can expose one user’s data to another. Instead, identify which portions of a page are genuinely shared and let Drupal vary or render personalized fragments correctly.

Test invalidation, not only speed

  1. Warm an anonymous page and confirm a cache HIT.
  2. Publish or edit content that appears on that page.
  3. Request the page again from a new client and verify that the changed content appears.
  4. Check related listings, feeds, image derivatives, and authenticated views for stale output.
  5. Repeat after a cache rebuild and after a deployment so both normal and maintenance paths are covered.

Enable OPcache and size PHP-FPM from evidence

Why OPcache matters

PHP OPcache stores compiled PHP bytecode in shared memory. Without it, PHP repeatedly parses and compiles Drupal and module files; with it, workers can execute already-compiled code. Enable OPcache for production and verify that it is active for the PHP-FPM SAPI, not only for command-line PHP.

Size OPcache from the actual code volume and monitor free memory, hit rate, and restarts. A deployment that changes PHP files must deliberately restart or invalidate OPcache so old code is not served. Conversely, restarting on every request or allowing frequent unplanned resets eliminates the benefit.

Choose PHP-FPM worker counts conservatively

PHP-FPM workers consume memory and compete for database connections. Estimate a safe worker ceiling from available RAM after reserving memory for the operating system, database, filesystem cache, and any Redis or Memcached service. Then compare that ceiling with measured concurrency, request duration, and queue time. Increase workers only when requests are queuing while CPU, memory, and database capacity remain available.

Too many workers cause swapping, database contention, and longer tail latency. Too few workers produce a queue even when the CPU is idle. Observe active, idle, and max-active workers during representative warm and cold tests rather than selecting a universal number. After changing the pool, restart PHP-FPM during a controlled window and watch error logs, queue time, memory pressure, and database connections.

Choose a cache backend for the bottleneck you measured

Drupal’s caching overview lists Memcached, Redis, and Varnish as options suitable for VPS or multi-server deployments. They solve different problems and have different failure modes.

Option Best fit What it changes Operational risks to test
Redis or Memcached Database-backed cache traffic is consuming measurable database time or I/O Moves selected Drupal cache bins to an in-memory service, reducing repeated database reads and writes Memory exhaustion, evictions, connection failures, serialization differences, and incorrect bin placement
Varnish or another reverse proxy Large volumes of safely shareable anonymous responses Serves complete HTTP responses before PHP executes Stale or private content leakage, complex invalidation, cookie rules, and difficult cache-header debugging
CDN Visitors are geographically distributed or static assets consume origin bandwidth Stores cacheable assets or responses at edge locations and reduces origin traffic Incorrect sharing of personalized responses, purge delays, cache-key variation, and extra DNS or TLS dependencies
OPcache PHP parsing and compilation appear in application execution time Reuses compiled PHP bytecode inside PHP workers Stale bytecode after deployment, insufficient shared memory, and resets that erase the hit rate

Redis and Memcached: move only appropriate bins

Start by proving that database-backed cache traffic is a bottleneck. Move the cache bins that benefit from shared in-memory access, then compare database writes, reads, latency, and cache hit rate. Keep an eye on memory usage and evictions. A cache service that constantly evicts hot entries can create more work than the database it replaced.

Redis documentation warns that Drupal often keeps cache entries indefinitely by default. An excessively low TTL can therefore hurt performance by forcing frequent recomputation. Set expiration deliberately for each workload, monitor hit rate and eviction rate, and test cache rebuilds, deployments, invalidation, and service restarts before production rollout. Decide what the site should do if Redis or Memcached is unavailable: fail over to database-backed bins where supported, or fail visibly and alert the operator.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not treat a backend cache as a page cache

Redis or Memcached accelerates cache-bin storage; it does not automatically make a personalized page safe to share. Varnish and a CDN can avoid PHP entirely for a cacheable response, but only when cookies, authorization, cache contexts, and response headers are handled correctly. Document which layer owns each cache and how it is purged so operators can trace a stale response.

Reduce database and application work before buying more CPU

Find slow queries and expensive render paths

Use database slow-query records, query plans, and Drupal profiling to identify the actual cost. Investigate slow Views, entity queries, contributed modules, and custom code. Look for N+1 queries, repeated entity loads, unbounded result sets, and code that performs work for every row or request. Remove unused modules only after checking dependencies and configuration; disabling code that supplies required fields or routes can create errors rather than speed.

Add indexes only for demonstrated plans

An index should answer a specific query-plan problem. Compare the plan before and after, and measure write overhead, index size, and lock behavior. Indexing every column increases storage and can slow inserts and updates. Keep schema changes in deployment scripts, test them on a production-sized copy, and retain a rollback plan.

Balance database memory with PHP and cache services

Fast storage helps database reads and writes, but storage alone cannot compensate for memory starvation. Reserve enough memory for the database buffer pool while leaving headroom for PHP-FPM, Redis or Memcached, the operating system, and filesystem cache. Watch swap activity and disk latency during cache misses, imports, cron jobs, and publishing bursts. A VPS that looks idle during a warm-cache test may still fail when a cache flush triggers simultaneous database work.

Reduce unnecessary variation carefully

Every additional cache context creates more variants and lowers reuse. Review whether language, route, query argument, user, or permission variation is genuinely required. Change contexts only after confirming that output remains correct for every affected audience. Correctness takes priority over a higher cache-hit percentage.

Optimize CSS, JavaScript, and images

Aggregate and compress front-end assets

Enable Drupal’s CSS and JavaScript aggregation in production and serve compressed responses through the web server or delivery layer. After enabling aggregation, request pages as an anonymous visitor and confirm that aggregated files are generated in sites/default/files and return successful, cacheable responses. Purge old aggregates after theme or module deployments so browsers do not receive references to missing files.

Generate responsive image styles

Define image styles that match the display widths used by the theme, generate modern formats where the browser population supports them, and avoid sending a desktop-sized original to a phone. Lazy-load media below the fold, but do not lazy-load the primary content image when doing so delays the largest visible element. Confirm that generated derivatives are readable by the web user and writable during creation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use a CDN or reverse proxy for shareable delivery

Drupal’s scalability guidance describes a CDN as a network of dedicated edge caches that offloads much of site delivery. A CDN is especially useful for static CSS, JavaScript, images, fonts, and cacheable anonymous pages when visitors are distant from the VPS. A reverse proxy such as Varnish can serve a complete anonymous response before PHP runs.

Cache only responses safe for sharing. Authenticated pages, account screens, checkout steps, permission-sensitive output, and responses containing private cookies need stricter rules or an explicit bypass. Test cache keys, cookies, authorization headers, purge behavior, and origin fallback. Measure origin request volume and bandwidth as well as page timing; offloading delivery may be the primary benefit even when TTFB changes little.

Validate each change and keep rollback simple

  1. Save the baseline: archive the platform details, test URLs, cache state, timings, resource metrics, and error counts.
  2. Apply one change: for example, enable OPcache, adjust one PHP-FPM pool setting, move one cache bin, or enable aggregation.
  3. Warm and cold test: run anonymous cached, anonymous uncached, and authenticated scenarios with the same method.
  4. Inspect headers and logs: check x-drupal-cache, browser and proxy cache headers, PHP-FPM queue and error logs, database slow queries, and CDN or reverse-proxy status.
  5. Check resource pressure: verify CPU, memory, swap, disk I/O, network utilization, database latency, and cache-service evictions.
  6. Exercise invalidation: publish, edit, unpublish, deploy code, rebuild caches, and restart the relevant service to confirm fresh output.
  7. Keep or roll back: retain the change only when latency, tail behavior, origin load, and correctness improve together. Restore the prior configuration when errors, stale content, memory pressure, or database contention increase.

Monitor after the test window

Performance regressions often appear during editorial peaks, cron jobs, imports, cache rebuilds, or traffic from a new geography. Continue watching error rate, queue time, PHP-FPM saturation, database latency, memory pressure, disk I/O, cache hit and eviction rates, and origin traffic. Drupal’s performance and scalability guidance treats site monitoring as an ongoing planning requirement, not a one-time benchmark.

A practical decision sequence for a Drupal VPS

If anonymous warm pages are slow

Verify that Internal Page Cache and Dynamic Page Cache are enabled, confirm repeated requests become HITs, and inspect browser or proxy max-age. If PHP still handles every anonymous request, investigate cookies, cache contexts, invalidation, and reverse-proxy rules before adding hardware. Once responses are safely shareable, a CDN or reverse proxy can reduce origin work.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If anonymous cold pages are slow

Profile database queries, Views, entity loading, contributed modules, custom code, and PHP execution. Confirm OPcache is active, then inspect PHP-FPM queueing and database latency. Tune workers or add indexes only when measurements identify those as the constraint.

If authenticated pages are slow

Expect less page-cache reuse. Focus on query plans, N+1 access, render work, OPcache, PHP-FPM sizing, and database storage. Review cache contexts for unnecessary variation without removing contexts required for security or correctness.

If the database is the bottleneck

Capture slow queries and plans, fix inefficient application paths, and add only justified indexes. Consider Redis or Memcached for cache bins after measuring cache traffic. Rebalance memory so the database, PHP-FPM, and cache service do not force one another into swap.

If bandwidth or geographic distance dominates

Aggregate and compress assets, generate responsive images, and place static files or safe anonymous responses behind a CDN. Verify that private responses bypass shared caches and measure origin traffic to confirm the offload.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What performance claims you can responsibly publish

There is no authoritative universal Drupal VPS requests-per-second or latency figure. Results depend on Drupal version, modules, theme, database, traffic mix, cache-hit rate, PHP workers, storage, and network conditions. A credible case study must state the VPS resources, software versions, cache state, request classes, concurrency, test location, warm-up method, and measured before-and-after values. Avoid promising a fixed gain from Redis, a worker count, a CDN, or a particular web server; the correct choice is the one that improves the measured bottleneck without introducing stale content, data leakage, or operational fragility.
