Work through the checks below in order: reset the browser, test Online and LAN separately, confirm the server started with the intended cluster files, then remove security, network, mod, and version blockers.

What “not showing up” actually means
Don’t Starve Together has separate discovery paths. Online is the public server list reached through the internet. LAN is the local-network list for players on the same router or network as the host. A server can be visible through one path and absent from the other without anything being wrong with the world itself.

There is a third possibility: the dedicated server never reached a running state. In that case, changing browser filters cannot help because there is no listening process to discover. The first useful question is therefore not “Why is the list broken?” but “Is the server running, and which discovery path should be showing it?”
Use this five-minute triage first
- On the DST main screen, open Browse Games, clear the name search, reset every filter, and search the exact configured
cluster_name. - Set Connection to Online for an internet-listed server. If the host and player are on the same local network, repeat the search with LAN.
- Make sure Steam is Online, the client is connected to the Klei account, DST has no pending update, and the game files have been verified.
- Check whether the dedicated-server window or service actually starts. A startup error, an immediately closing process, or a missing shard process points to configuration, security software, or mods rather than browser filtering.
- If the server is local, test a direct connection with
c_connect("localhost"). This bypasses the browser and helps separate a discovery regression from a server that cannot accept connections.
Do not rebuild the cluster until these tests are complete. Recreating files can erase a configuration detail that would have identified the cause.

Reset Browse Games filters and search the real cluster name
Clear every filter
From the main screen, choose Browse Games. Clear any text in the server-name field and restore the default values for game mode, player count, password visibility, and other filters shown by your client. A single old filter can hide a server that is otherwise healthy.
Search again using the exact value assigned to cluster_name. Klei forum guidance identifies cluster_name as the name displayed in the server browser. It is not necessarily the folder name, the world name, or the name you use informally with friends. Copy the spelling, spaces, and punctuation exactly.

Change the Connection selector from Online to LAN when the host and player are on the same local network. Klei’s network guidance specifically uses this switch for direct local-area-network connections. Then switch back to Online when the server is meant to be reachable over the internet.
If the server appears only under LAN, that is evidence of a public-discovery or internet-path problem, not proof that the dedicated server is broken. If it appears under neither setting, continue with the process and configuration checks below.
Check Steam, the Klei account, and the client build
Return Steam to Online mode
Steam Offline mode changes what DST can discover. Klei states that “Don’t Starve Together only allows LAN play when in Steam Offline Mode.” A client left in Offline mode should therefore not be expected to browse public Online servers. Reconnect Steam, restart it if necessary, and repeat the search with Connection: Online.
Confirm the account and updates
The joining instructions from Playdigious Support tell players to connect the Steam client to their Klei account and then select Browse Games to see available servers. Make that account connection before diagnosing an empty public list.

Install any pending DST update on both the client and the dedicated server. The browser is filtered by the client’s current build and connection mode, so a server running an older build may be omitted even when its process is alive. After updating, restart Steam and DST rather than relying on an already-open browser session.
Verify the local game files
Use Steam’s file-verification function for DST. This replaces damaged or incomplete client files that can prevent browsing or direct connection. Verification does not repair a malformed cluster configuration or a blocked server executable, so continue to the server-side checks if the list remains empty.
Confirm that the dedicated server is configured to be visible
Check for intentional offline mode
A server started with Klei’s -offline option is intentionally excluded from the public list. Klei documents that it “will not be listed publicly”; only players on the local network can join it. Remove that option when the goal is an internet-listed server, or leave it in place and use the LAN connection path when private local play is intended.
Use a valid LAN port
For same-LAN discovery, Klei’s command-line guide requires the server port to be between 10998 and 11018 inclusive. This range is specifically the condition for players on the same LAN to see the server in their listing. If you changed the port, correct it, restart the server, and test with the LAN filter.
This LAN visibility requirement should not be confused with a general guarantee that any port in the range will be reachable over the internet. Public connectivity can still be affected by a firewall, VPN, router rule, or other network path.
Verify the cluster and shard files
The launch command must point to the cluster and shard you intend to run. Klei’s documented Master/Caves arrangement expects:

cluster.inifile in the cluster directory. - An expected
server.inifile in each shard directory, including the Master and Caves shards when both are enabled. - Launch arguments that select the intended
-clusterdirectory and the intended-shard.
A server launched against a different cluster directory can start successfully while showing a different name, settings, or shard layout from the one you edited. Compare the command’s -cluster and -shard values with the files you just checked before changing any settings.
Determine whether the server process starts cleanly
Recognize a startup failure
If the console reports Dedicated Server Failed To Start, or the process closes immediately, solve that failure before troubleshooting the browser. A server that never remains running cannot publish a listing.

Klei attributes this error generally to software blocking the game application, with caves enabled being a common context. Allow the following executables through security software and Windows Controlled Folder Access:

Use the paths that exist in your installation. Do not whitelist an unrelated file with a similar name, and do not assume that allowing the normal game executable automatically allows the null-renderer dedicated-server executable.
Disable dedicated-server mods during initialization
Klei advises disabling all dedicated-server mods when initialization fails. A broken mod can stop the Master or Caves shard before the server registers itself. Turn off every server mod, start the unmodified cluster, and only then re-enable mods one at a time. This creates a clear checkpoint: if the server appears without mods and disappears after one mod returns, that mod is the actionable suspect.
Remove firewall, VPN, antivirus, and router blockers
Apply the basic network reset
Klei’s connectivity guidance recommends restarting the computer and router, updating DST, verifying files, and allowing DST through the firewall. Perform the restart after changing a firewall or security rule so that stale processes and rules are not mistaken for a current result.

Temporarily disable VPN or accelerator software while testing. These tools can change the route or bind the game to a virtual network adapter, making a server appear on LAN but not through the expected path, or making a public server unreachable from the client. Restore the VPN after the test; the goal is to identify the path that changes the result, not to leave protection disabled.
Check antivirus and Controlled Folder Access
Security software can block executable startup or prevent the server from writing its cluster and shard state. Permit the four DST executables listed above, and review Controlled Folder Access if Windows reports that an application was prevented from making changes. If a security product quarantined a DST file, restore it only after confirming that the file belongs to the game installation and then verify the game files.
Reduce Wi-Fi and bandwidth variables
Background applications can consume bandwidth and increase latency. Close downloads, streams, and synchronization tools during the test. If Wi-Fi is unreliable, Klei recommends testing with wired Ethernet. Klei recommends a ping of 150 or below for optimal network performance; a higher or unstable result is a reason to fix the network path before judging the server browser.
Use a clean mod test instead of guessing
Mods can affect both startup and the client’s ability to join a world. Disable them one at a time when you need to identify a particular conflict. If individual disabling does not produce a clean launch, Klei’s network guide recommends deleting the game’s Mods folder and unsubscribing from Workshop mods before relaunching. This is a more complete reset than toggling a server checkbox while stale files remain on disk.
Test the unmodded server with the same Online or LAN setting that previously failed. Keep the cluster files unchanged during this test so that a change in visibility can be attributed to the mod cleanup rather than to a simultaneous configuration edit.

Compare client and server versions
If the server worked before an update, compare the client and dedicated-server builds, finish every pending update, and restart Steam. The server list is filtered by the client’s current build and connection mode; a mismatch can therefore look like a missing server rather than an explicit error.

Bypass the browser to isolate discovery
Klei’s bug tracker records a reproduced LAN-browser issue in which a running local server was absent from the LAN list. That issue was later marked Fixed, but it demonstrates why a healthy process can still be invisible. During the incident, users could connect directly with:
c_connect("localhost")Use this only as a diagnostic bypass on the host computer. A successful direct connection proves that the local server accepted a connection; it does not prove that the browser, LAN advertisement, public registration, or a remote player’s network path is working. If direct connection succeeds while Browse Games remains empty, record the client build, connection filter, and exact cluster name and check Klei’s current status and support information before rebuilding anything.

Escalate with evidence instead of starting over
When the sequence does not restore the listing, check Klei’s service status before making more configuration changes. A service-side incident can make several unrelated servers disappear at once.
For a persistent startup or connectivity failure, report it through the DST Bug Tracker with the requested logs. Klei specifically asks for client_log.txt and the server logs when ordinary troubleshooting does not resolve the problem. Include the following facts in the report:
- Whether Steam was Online and the client was connected to the Klei account.
- Whether the server was tested under Online, LAN, or both Connection filters.
- The exact
cluster_name, whether-offlinewas used, and the configured port. - Whether the Master and Caves processes remained running.
- The client and server build status after updating and file verification.
- Whether disabling mods, VPN software, firewall rules, or Controlled Folder Access changed the result.
- Whether
c_connect("localhost")succeeded on the host.
This information distinguishes a hidden listing from a failed process and gives support enough context to reproduce the correct path.
