To update a 7 Days to Die dedicated server to Version 2.0, stop it cleanly, back up the world and configuration, update Steam app 294420 with SteamCMD, preserve your settings in a custom XML file, and make sure every client uses the same compatible branch. The update command changes server files; it is not a substitute for a save backup.

Version 2.0 is a historical target rather than a guarantee that the current default branch still points to that build. If the default branch has moved on, select the exact named 2.0 beta or release branch and verify the manifest before downloading.

What you need before starting
Plan the update as a short maintenance window. You need access to the machine that runs the dedicated server, its install directory, the save directory, SteamCMD, and the launch script or service that starts the server. Do not update while the process is still writing world data.
Version 2.0 may require a pinned branch
The stable/default branch is not permanently tied to one version. A server installed today can therefore become newer than 2.0 when you run an ordinary update. If your players or mods require 2.0, use the exact branch identifier published for that build. Branch names are volatile; a label such as latest_experimental must not be treated as a synonym for 2.0 without checking what build Steam currently serves.

Historically, Version 2.0 entered public experimental beta on June 16, 2025, with a June 30, 2025 stable target reported in secondary coverage. Those dates are useful orientation only. The branch manifest and the release information available to you determine whether a particular server install is actually on 2.0.
Record the current installation
- Current server build and branch, as shown in the startup output or server console.
- SteamCMD install path, such as
C:7dtd-serveron Windows or/home/sdtd/7dtd-serveron Linux. - The launch command, service definition, scheduled task, or control-panel setting used to start the server.
- World name, save directory, player-data location, configured ports, and any custom XML files.
- Installed mods, their versions, and whether they alter server binaries, XML, or generated world data.
- Recent logs and the identity of the operating-system account that runs the server.
Stop the server cleanly
Ask players to disconnect, issue the normal shutdown command or use the service manager, and wait until the process exits. A clean stop gives the game time to flush the world and player data. Killing the process during a save can leave an apparently successful update with damaged or incomplete data.

Steam distributes the dedicated server separately from the ordinary game client. The IDs are:

Use app 294420 in every server update command. Installing or updating app 251570 on the host does not update the dedicated server and can create confusing version reports.
Back up the world and configuration
Copy the following to storage outside the live server directory before running SteamCMD:
- The complete save directory, including the world and player data.
- The shipped
serverconfig.xmland every custom XML file used by your launch command. - Launch scripts, service files, scheduled-task definitions, and environment files.
- Important server and SteamCMD logs.
- Any mod folder or separately stored mod package that you may need for a rollback.
Keep the backup with a date and the old build or branch written in its name. If storage permits, make a second copy on another disk or machine. The SteamCMD validate option checks downloaded files; it does not preserve a previous world or configuration and cannot undo a bad upgrade.
Choose the Version 2.0 branch
First determine whether the default branch is still the build you need. SteamCMD reports the files it downloads, while the provider or release documentation for your target build supplies the exact beta identifier. Confirm the branch before updating rather than downloading the default and trying to infer the version afterward.
Default branch
If the current default branch is confirmed to be Version 2.0, no beta selector is needed. The core update command is:
+app_update 294420 validate +quit
Named 2.0 branch
If the default branch is newer, add the exact branch name after -beta. Replace the value in angle brackets with the real identifier; it is deliberately not hard-coded here because branch names change:

+app_update 294420 -beta <exact-2.0-branch-name> validate +quit
Do not guess a branch from a forum post or assume that an experimental label still maps to 2.0. Check the manifest or the release documentation you are using, and record the chosen branch alongside your backup.

- Open Command Prompt or PowerShell with an account that can write to the server directory.
- Run SteamCMD with the server directory, anonymous login, app 294420, validation, and exit:
steamcmd +force_install_dir "C:7dtd-server" +login anonymous +app_update 294420 validate +quit
For a pinned branch, use:
steamcmd +force_install_dir "C:7dtd-server" +login anonymous +app_update 294420 -beta <exact-2.0-branch-name> validate +quit
+force_install_dir points SteamCMD at the existing server installation, +login anonymous uses the anonymous server download route, +app_update 294420 downloads changed files, and validate checks the installation after the download. SteamCMD may finish quickly when files are already current.
Run SteamCMD on Linux
- Change to the directory containing SteamCMD and ensure the account running the server can write to the destination.
- Run the Linux equivalent:
./steamcmd.sh +force_install_dir /home/sdtd/7dtd-server +login anonymous +app_update 294420 validate +quit

For a named branch:
./steamcmd.sh +force_install_dir /home/sdtd/7dtd-server +login anonymous +app_update 294420 -beta <exact-2.0-branch-name> validate +quit
Use the actual absolute path for your host. If SteamCMD reports permission errors, stop there and correct ownership or directory permissions rather than running repeated partial updates as different users; mixed ownership can prevent the service from reading or writing saves later.
Preserve your serverconfig.xml safely
Updates can ship a newer configuration schema. Editing the vendor-supplied file directly is fragile because a later update can replace it. Keep a custom file, for example myserver.xml, and point the launch command at that file.
- After the update, copy the newly shipped
serverconfig.xmlto a comparison file, such asserverconfig-2.0-shipped.xml. - Compare it with the pre-update copy and with your current custom configuration.
- Merge your chosen world, gameplay, access, visibility, and network settings into the new schema instead of replacing the new file wholesale.
- Inspect newly added, renamed, or removed properties. Server-browser fields such as
RegionandLanguagecan change between releases. - Save the merged result as
myserver.xmland keep the original shipped file untouched for reference.
XML syntax errors can stop the server before it creates a world. Check that every element is closed, attribute values are quoted, and values use the spelling and type shown in the newly shipped file. If the server fails immediately after a configuration merge, launch once with a known-good copy to isolate the problematic setting.

Launch the updated server with the custom configuration
Use the executable supplied in the server installation and pass the custom file explicitly. The standard headless argument set is:
-quit -batchmode -nographics -configfile=myserver.xml -dedicated
Your platform script may place the executable before these arguments, for example a Windows batch file or a Linux shell script. Keep the same working directory and environment used before the update. If your service definition starts in another directory, use an absolute path for the configuration file or set the service working directory correctly.
Do not delete the old configuration until the new launch has been verified. Keeping the old file outside the live path makes it easy to compare settings without accidentally starting the server with stale values.
Verify the update before inviting players back
Watch the console and logs from a cold start. A successful download does not prove that the server is running the intended branch or that the world loaded correctly.
Startup checks
- The process reaches a ready state without an XML parse, missing-file, permission, or assembly error.
- The reported build corresponds to the intended Version 2.0 branch.
- The expected world and player-data paths are shown, and the existing world loads instead of prompting for a new one.
- The configured port is unchanged unless you intentionally changed it. The default server port is 26900.
- The server appears in the browser with the expected name, region, language, and visibility settings.
- A test client can join, see the existing character and inventory, and interact with the world.
Match every client to the server
Players must run a compatible client build and branch. A client on a different branch or build commonly fails to connect, reports a version mismatch, or disconnects during loading. Have everyone select the same stable, experimental, or named beta branch that you selected for the server, then restart the client so Steam applies the change.
Check connectivity from outside the host
Test from a machine that is not using the host’s local network path. Confirm that the operating-system firewall, router forwarding, and any provider-level firewall allow the port configured by the server. If you changed the port from 26900, use the new value consistently in the server configuration, forwarding rule, and connection instructions.
Troubleshoot common update failures
SteamCMD updated the wrong version
Symptom: The download completes, but the startup banner shows a build newer than 2.0 or a branch different from the one your players use.

Clients cannot connect after the update
Symptom: Players receive a version or compatibility error while the server appears healthy.

Fix: Compare the server branch and build with each client’s branch and build. Remove cached branch selections that Steam has not applied, restart the client, and test with one fully updated client before changing network settings. If only remote players fail, investigate firewall and forwarding rules after build compatibility is confirmed.
The world is missing or a new world starts
Symptom: The server starts, but the old map, player profiles, or progression is absent.
Fix: Stop the process and inspect myserver.xml for changed world and save-path values. Make sure the service is using the intended working directory and account. Do not generate new gameplay data over the old save. Restore the backed-up save directory if the original data was moved or overwritten.
The server exits while reading XML
Symptom: Startup stops with an XML parse or unknown-property error.
Fix: Start from the newly shipped configuration, then merge your settings in smaller groups. Remove obsolete properties, correct malformed tags and quotes, and keep a copy of each working revision. Schema changes are a reason to merge settings, not to replace the new file with an older one wholesale.
Mods cause errors or missing content
Symptom: The unmodded server starts, but the modded installation crashes, logs missing assemblies, or behaves unpredictably.

Fix: Disable mods, confirm that the clean 2.0 server loads the world, then add mods back one at a time. Use only versions explicitly compatible with your selected 2.0 build. There is no complete compatibility matrix covering every mod, so treat an unverified mod as a possible cause rather than changing core server files blindly.
The server is not listed
Symptom: Direct connections work, but the browser does not show the server.
Fix: Check the configured port, firewall and router rules, and the browser-facing fields in the merged XML. Compare the new shipped configuration for fields such as Region and Language. A listing problem can be separate from the game connection itself, so test direct connectivity before rolling back binaries.

SteamCMD reports disk or permission errors
Symptom: SteamCMD cannot create, replace, or validate files.

Fix: Confirm available disk space, stop any process holding server files open, and ensure the SteamCMD account owns or can write to the install directory. Keep the server service and update command on a consistent account. Run validation again only after the underlying filesystem problem is fixed.

- Stop the server and prevent an automatic restart from writing more data.
- Save the current logs so you can diagnose the failure without losing evidence.
- Move the failed installation or its changed files aside rather than deleting your backup.
- Restore the pre-update server files, custom XML, launch scripts, and save directory from the dated backup.
- Launch with the previous branch and confirm that the world and players load.
- Keep the failed logs and write down the branch, command, and configuration revision before attempting another upgrade.
A rollback restores the state you backed up; it does not make a 2.0-only save or configuration compatible with an older build. Always test the restored world before allowing normal play.
Self-hosting versus managed hosting
Running the update yourself gives you direct control over branch pinning and files. A managed host can reduce routine administration, but its terms determine whether you can select a historical branch, install build-specific mods, download logs, and restore your own backups.

Ask specifically whether the host can pin the exact 2.0 branch, preserve custom XML, expose SteamCMD or equivalent logs, and restore a complete save. A generic “version 2” selector is not enough if it does not identify the actual build.

Maintain the server after the upgrade
Keep a known-good baseline
Store the working branch name, build, launch command, custom XML, and backup location together. That record turns the next update into a repeatable change instead of a reconstruction exercise.
Separate vendor files from your files
Treat the shipped serverconfig.xml as a reference supplied by the current build. Keep your settings in myserver.xml, preserve launch scripts outside files Steam may replace, and compare each new shipped XML before merging changes.
Update in a test window
For a community server, announce downtime, take the backup, update, and perform a client join test before reopening access. If the server is heavily modded, test the clean build first and then reintroduce compatible mods in a controlled order.
Repeat the backup discipline
Make a fresh dated backup before every branch change, even when the update appears small. Keep at least one copy that the server process cannot overwrite. SteamCMD can repair binaries, but only your backup protects the world, player data, and custom settings.
