The client row is not a server target. A headless server does not need the client’s graphics hardware, while a player connecting to the world still needs a suitable game client and internet connection.

What the CPU requirement really tells you
The published frequency is a floor
Klei’s server FAQ gives a processor frequency, not a modern benchmark, core count or architecture. That number tells you the dedicated-server program can launch on old hardware; it does not establish how many players, caves or mods the machine can simulate smoothly.
Favor consistent single-thread performance
DST’s world simulation is sensitive to the performance of the thread doing the simulation. A processor with many slow cores is not automatically better than one with fewer, faster cores. When comparing a spare PC, virtual machine or rented instance, prioritize current-generation single-thread performance and guaranteed CPU time over a large advertised core count. The official material does not provide a benchmark score to use as a cutoff, so treat provider “vCPU” labels as something to investigate rather than a promise of equivalent performance.

Leave room for neighboring work
On a home host, browsers, game clients, indexing, updates and backup jobs can compete with the server at exactly the wrong moment. On a virtual server, noisy-neighbor contention or a provider’s CPU policy can have the same effect. A machine that meets the minimum while idle may still produce simulation stalls when another process consumes the processor. Schedule maintenance and backups outside play sessions, and choose an instance with predictable CPU allocation when renting.
RAM: why one gigabyte is not a player formula
The minimum is for starting the server
The dedicated-server FAQ lists at least 1 GB of RAM. That is the amount Klei published for the software baseline, not a statement that a live world, operating system, caves, mods and monitoring services will fit comfortably in the same amount.

- The operating system and its file cache.
- The master world and any cave or additional shard processes.
- World saves, networking buffers and log output.
- Server-side mods and their assets.
- Control panels, monitoring agents, scheduled backups and other services.
Because these variables change with configuration, Klei does not publish a current RAM-per-player equation in the cited documentation. Do not multiply a supposed “RAM per slot” number from another game and present it as an official DST rule. Instead, watch memory usage during a representative session, including the largest number of simultaneous players and every enabled shard or mod, then keep enough unused capacity to avoid swapping.

How to size memory in practice
- Start with the operating system’s own memory needs, rather than assigning every installed gigabyte to DST.
- Account for the master world, caves or other shards, plus the mod set you actually intend to run.
- Run a test session with the expected player count and monitor resident memory and swap activity.
- Increase the machine’s memory or remove services and mods if the operating system begins reclaiming aggressively, the server is killed by the host, or save and tick activity becomes erratic.
This process gives you an evidence-based margin without inventing a universal per-player figure.
Storage, saves and network capacity
Storage requirements have two different figures
Klei’s dedicated-server FAQ lists at least 1 GB of hard-drive space, while the Steam client listing gives 3 GB for the Windows game. These figures come from 2016 and describe installation minimums. A server also writes world data, logs, crash information, updates and backups, so allocating only the installation minimum makes routine maintenance risky.
Protect the world data
Keep free space for more than one backup and verify that backups can be restored. A full volume can prevent a save or log rotation even when CPU and RAM are adequate. If you rent a server, read the provider’s backup policy instead of assuming that snapshots are included; if you self-host, put copies on a separate disk or machine so a failed host does not take out the only world copy.

Latency is separate from hardware
Players need broadband internet according to the Steam client listing, but bandwidth alone does not guarantee a good session. Select a hosting location near most players, use a stable wired connection when possible, and measure the route to the server. A powerful machine in a distant region can feel worse than a modest host nearby.
How many slots can a DST server support?
The accessible official sources do not state a current universal maximum slot count. Treat slots as a configuration and product-policy question, not as a fixed hardware specification. The number you can set may depend on the current game build, server configuration, shard arrangement and the control panel or service you use.
Verify a slot count before you promise it
- Check the current server settings and the build version you will run.
- Ask a hosting provider which slot values its panel permits, rather than relying on an old plan page or a different game’s limits.
- Confirm whether the advertised number applies to one world, all shards combined, or only a connection allowance.
- Test the intended population with the actual mods and caves enabled.
A higher connection allowance does not automatically mean smooth simulation. CPU contention, memory pressure, mod behavior and network latency can become the limiting factors first.

Self-hosting versus renting a dedicated server
Both approaches can meet the published software baseline. The right choice depends on control, reliability and the work you want to perform.

- Advantages: You control the hardware, operating system, files, mods, backups and restart schedule. A spare machine can avoid a recurring hosting bill.
- Trade-offs: Your power, upload connection, router and maintenance become part of the service. The world is unavailable when the host is off, asleep or disconnected, and you are responsible for updates and recovery.
- Best fit: A group that plays at predictable times and has someone willing to maintain the machine and protect the save files.
Renting a game server or virtual machine
- Advantages: An always-on location, data-center connectivity, provider restart controls and an administration panel can reduce home-network work.
- Trade-offs: CPU consistency, memory headroom, storage, backups, geography, operating-system support, mod handling and slot limits vary by provider. Monthly cost continues even when nobody is playing.
- Best fit: A group that needs a persistent world, players in different homes, or a host who does not want one player’s computer to be the permanent server.
Before paying, obtain written answers about guaranteed CPU allocation, included memory, storage and backup retention, allowed slot settings, server locations, mod support, restart and monitoring controls, supported operating systems, and the total recurring price. The Klei minimum does not verify any provider’s plan limits.
A practical sizing procedure
- Define the workload. Record the expected simultaneous players, whether caves or additional shards will run, the mod list, and whether the world must remain online around the clock.
- Choose the host model. Compare a spare PC, a machine in your home and a rented server using CPU consistency, memory headroom, storage and backup responsibility—not only the advertised slot count.
- Install the current dedicated-server build. Follow Klei’s current installation and configuration instructions, and keep the server and clients on compatible versions. Klei warns that outdated versions can contain unpatched bugs and cannot connect to updated servers; see the official troubleshooting guide.
- Configure the world. Apply the world, shard, mod, network and access settings described in Klei’s Dedicated Server Settings Guide. Keep a copy of the configuration before making major changes.
- Secure access. If the world should be private, use the documented local-network-only option or whitelist support rather than publishing an open server address. Give the connection details only to intended players.
- Load-test before inviting everyone. Join with several clients, move through the busiest areas, open caves or shards, and exercise the mod features that matter. Observe CPU utilization, memory, disk space, network latency and log growth.
- Set operations policy. Decide who can restart the process, where backups are stored, how often updates occur and how you will roll back a faulty mod or world change.
Troubleshooting performance and connection problems
The server starts but lags during play
- Check whether one CPU thread is saturated even when total CPU percentage looks moderate.
- Look for competing applications, scheduled scans, updates or backup jobs.
- Compare memory use with available capacity and check for swap or host-level memory pressure.
- Temporarily disable nonessential mods and retest the same player activity.
- Reduce unnecessary shards or services, then retest before replacing hardware.
Players cannot connect after an update
Confirm that the server and every client use compatible, current versions. Klei specifically notes that outdated versions may contain unpatched bugs and will not connect to updated servers. Update first, then revisit mods that have not been updated for the same build.

Performance changed after adding a mod
Reproduce the problem with the mod disabled, keeping the player count and world activity the same. If the issue disappears, check the mod’s current compatibility information or remove it. Klei’s troubleshooting guidance also recommends disabling incompatible mods.
The host is unstable even though specifications look sufficient
Follow Klei’s advice to check system specifications, update drivers and the operating system, and reduce interfering background programs. Its support guidance explicitly warns that other applications can negatively affect Steam and the game; read the troubleshooting guide for the current checks.

Bottom line
The official dedicated-server baseline is useful for confirming that the software can run, not for choosing a comfortable production host. Plan for strong, consistent single-thread CPU performance; memory headroom for the operating system, shards and mods; storage beyond the installation minimum for saves and backups; and a network location that keeps latency low. Since no current official RAM-per-player formula or universal slot cap is published, validate the exact player count and configuration you intend to run, then monitor the real workload before calling the server ready.
