Zombie villagers are the undead form of Minecraft villagers. You can find them in ordinary zombie spawns, igloo basements and zombie villages, or create one when a zombie infects a villager. To restore one, apply Weakness and use one non-enchanted golden apple; the conversion normally takes 180–300 seconds (three to five minutes).

This guide covers their spawning rules, Java-versus-Bedrock differences, drops, status effects, curing procedure and the trade discounts that follow a successful cure.

What a zombie villager is

A zombie villager is a zombie variant that preserves the identity of the villager it came from. Its profession and clothing style remain recognizable, but the outfit is tattered. A naturally spawned zombie villager can instead have a random profession, an unemployed outfit or a nitwit outfit.

They can enter your world in three main ways:

  • They can replace an ordinary zombie during natural spawning.
  • They can appear in the basement of an igloo.
  • A zombie can infect an ordinary villager.

Baby zombie villagers account for 5% of zombie-villager spawns. A baby remains a baby after curing, so curing does not turn it into an adult villager.

Infection depends on difficulty

When a zombie kills a villager, the result is determined by the world’s difficulty. The chance of creating a zombie villager is 0% on Easy, 50% on Normal and 100% on Hard. On Easy, the villager dies instead, so an infection-based curing plan is safest on Normal or Hard only if you are prepared to protect the villager and accept the stated risk.

How zombie villagers spawn in Java and Bedrock

The two editions use different replacement and grouping rules. The figures below describe natural spawning, not an infection you create yourself.

Spawn detail Java Edition Bedrock Edition
Replacement chance 5% of normal-cycle zombie replacements 5% of zombies are replaced by zombie-villager groups
Group size Single replacement spawns are used for this rule Replacement groups contain 2–4 zombie villagers
Old-growth pine taiga weighting 20% replacement chance The cited reference gives no separate old-growth pine taiga figure
Naturally spawned equipment Possible Zombie villagers do not spawn with equipment
Nearby curing discount Spreads through the game’s gossip-based villager system Applies to nearby villagers within a 16-block cube

Java therefore gives you a higher natural chance in an old-growth pine taiga, while Bedrock is the edition in which a replacement event can produce a group of two to four. Neither rule changes the cure itself: Weakness followed by one regular golden apple is still the required sequence.

Zombie-villager variants and behavior

Profession and appearance

A zombie villager that came from a professional villager keeps that profession’s visual identity. The clothing is damaged and ragged, but the original role can still be recognized. Natural spawns are less predictable because they may use a random profession, the plain unemployed appearance or the nitwit appearance.

Baby zombie villagers

Baby zombie villagers make up 5% of zombie-villager spawns. They are smaller and retain the baby form after curing. If you are building a trading hall, leave enough vertical and horizontal space for the creature you actually captured; curing changes its undead state, not its age.

Undead status effects

Zombie villagers follow undead status-effect rules:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Instant Health damages them.
  • Instant Damage heals them.
  • Poison has no effect.
  • Regeneration has no effect.

These reversed effects matter during capture and combat. A healing splash potion is harmful to a zombie villager, while a harming effect can restore its health, so check the potion name before throwing it.

How to cure a zombie villager

The cure requires two effects in order: Weakness first, then a non-enchanted golden apple while Weakness is active. The following procedure minimizes the chance that the captive burns, wanders away or is killed by another mob.

  1. Capture it in a secure enclosure. Use a roofed, enclosed space that prevents daylight and hostile mobs from reaching the zombie villager. Keep the enclosure close enough for you to work but isolated from villagers you are not ready to expose.
  2. Apply Weakness. The documented options include a splash potion of Weakness, a lingering potion of Weakness, an Arrow of Weakness or a witch applying the effect. Confirm that the Weakness particles are present before moving to the next step.
  3. Use one regular golden apple. While Weakness is active, use a non-enchanted golden apple on the zombie villager. An enchanted golden apple is not the required item for this conversion.
  4. Confirm that conversion has started. The zombie villager shakes and emits red particles. Those signs mean the cure timer is running.
  5. Protect the conversion. Wait about 180–300 seconds, or three to five minutes. Keep the enclosure secure for the entire interval; an interrupted or killed captive cannot finish converting.
  6. Collect the cured villager. When the timer ends, the mob becomes a normal villager. Move it into its permanent work or housing area only after the conversion is complete.

Speeding up the timer

Iron bars and beds placed in the nearby checking volume can accelerate conversion. They are optional: the ordinary timer remains 180–300 seconds, but a suitable arrangement of bars and beds can shorten the wait. Keep the structure secure even when using these accelerators.

Protecting the enclosure during conversion

The cure is vulnerable because the zombie villager remains an undead hostile mob until the timer finishes. A practical enclosure should have a roof, solid walls and a controlled opening through which you can throw the Weakness effect and use the apple. Avoid placing the captive where another zombie can reach it, and do not leave an unprotected villager nearby if an infection chain would be dangerous.

  • Use lighting and a roof to prevent additional hostile mobs from sharing the space.
  • Block escape routes before applying Weakness; the shaking animation does not make the mob harmless.
  • Keep the curing area accessible so you can check the particles and timer setup without opening the entire enclosure.
  • Do not use Instant Health on the captive. As an undead mob, it takes damage from that effect.

Trades and discounts after curing

Cured villagers retain their trades

Mojang Studios’ Village & Pillage release notes state: “Cured zombie villagers retain their trades.” A villager that had a profession and established trades before zombification can therefore return with that trading identity after the cure. The statement does not turn an unemployed or nitwit zombie villager into a professional one; those identities remain subject to the villager’s original state and normal villager mechanics.

The permanent discount for the curing player

A formerly professional villager gives the player who cured it a permanent trade discount. This is tied to the curing player, not simply to the location where the villager was restored. If you are creating a trading hall, cure the villager with the account that will actually make the purchases.

Discounts for nearby villagers

Other villagers can receive smaller discounts from the curing event. The editions handle the proximity effect differently:

  • Java Edition: the nearby effect is handled through the villager gossip system.
  • Bedrock Edition: the proximity effect applies within a 16-block cube.

Because the permanent discount and the nearby discount are separate effects, the curing player can receive the strongest benefit while surrounding villagers receive a smaller one. The nearby effect is not a substitute for curing the villager whose trades you specifically want.

What zombie villagers drop

Adult and baby zombie villagers have different experience values. Equipment drops are relevant to Java Edition only because Bedrock zombie villagers do not spawn with equipment.

Mob and edition Experience Naturally spawned equipment Equipment-drop chance
Adult zombie villager, Java 5 XP, plus 1–3 XP for each naturally spawned equipment item Iron shovel, iron sword, random armor and seasonal pumpkins can occur 8.5%; Looting raises the chance by one percentage point per level, reaching 11.5% with Looting III
Baby zombie villager, Java 12 XP Uses the Java equipment rules when equipment is present The cited entity reference gives the equipment chance for naturally spawned equipment rather than a separate baby-only percentage
Adult zombie villager, Bedrock 5 XP No naturally spawned equipment No equipment-drop roll applies
Baby zombie villager, Bedrock 12 XP No naturally spawned equipment No equipment-drop roll applies

The 1–3 XP addition is awarded per item of naturally spawned equipment on an adult. It is not a flat bonus for every adult zombie villager. A Java zombie villager carrying several naturally generated items can therefore yield more than the base 5 XP.

What counts as equipment

Java zombie villagers can naturally appear with an iron shovel, an iron sword, random armor or seasonal pumpkins. The equipment chance is 8.5% before Looting. Each Looting level adds one percentage point, so Looting III brings the stated chance to 11.5%. These are spawn and drop rules for naturally generated equipment; they do not mean every killed zombie villager drops a weapon.

Java and Bedrock: which differences matter in practice?

Finding one

Java players normally encounter a single replacement zombie under the standard 5% rule, with a 20% replacement chance in an old-growth pine taiga. Bedrock players can encounter a replacement group of two to four. If you are searching for several captives, Bedrock’s grouping can produce multiple targets at once, while Java’s old-growth pine taiga weighting can make that biome especially useful for natural searches.

Planning for drops

Only Java zombie villagers naturally spawn with equipment according to the cited reference. A Bedrock farm should not be designed around collecting swords, shovels or armor from zombie villagers, while a Java farm can account for the 8.5% base equipment chance and the 11.5% maximum stated for Looting III.

Planning a trading hall

The cure sequence and the retention of trades apply across the editions, but nearby discounts differ. Java uses gossip-based propagation; Bedrock uses a 16-block-cube proximity rule. Leave room around a Bedrock curing area if you want nearby villagers to receive the smaller discount, and treat Java’s effect as a villager-gossip interaction rather than a simple geometric radius.

Common mistakes and recovery decisions

The apple does nothing

Check the two prerequisites: the effect must be Weakness, and the apple must be non-enchanted. Reapply Weakness if its duration expired, then use the regular golden apple while the effect is visible. The shaking and red particles are the confirmation that the sequence worked.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The captive dies before conversion

Reinforce the roof and walls, remove access for other hostile mobs and avoid harmful environmental exposure. A zombie villager that dies cannot be recovered by waiting longer, so restart with another captive and secure the enclosure before applying the effect.

The cured villager has no useful profession

Curing restores the villager’s prior trading identity; it is not a profession-selection mechanic. A naturally spawned zombie villager may have been unemployed or a nitwit, and a baby remains a baby. Capture a villager with the profession and trade history you want before zombification when your objective is a specific trading setup.

Nearby villagers did not receive the same discount

The permanent discount belongs to the player who performed the cure. Other villagers receive only the smaller nearby effect, and the rule differs by edition: Bedrock checks a 16-block cube, while Java uses gossip. Verify the edition and the villagers’ proximity or gossip conditions before assuming the cure failed.

Quick reference checklist

  • Zombie villagers are a zombie variant found naturally, in igloo basements and zombie villages, or through villager infection.
  • Natural replacement is 5% in the normal Java cycle, 20% in Java old-growth pine taiga and 5% in Bedrock, where replacements arrive in groups of two to four.
  • Apply Weakness, then use one non-enchanted golden apple.
  • Expect 180–300 seconds of conversion time; iron bars and beds nearby can accelerate it.
  • Adults drop 5 XP plus 1–3 XP per naturally spawned equipment item; babies drop 12 XP.
  • Java equipment chance is 8.5%, rising to 11.5% with Looting III; Bedrock zombie villagers do not spawn with equipment.
  • Cured zombie villagers retain their trades.
  • The curing player receives a permanent discount from a formerly professional villager; nearby villagers receive smaller discounts.
  • Bedrock’s nearby discount uses a 16-block cube, while Java uses gossip-based propagation.
