Most Don’t Starve Together server failures can be isolated to one of five layers: local game files or mods, the host computer, the network path, dedicated-server configuration, or an online platform service. Start by identifying the symptom, verify the game and updates, then test without mods and over a wired connection. Only after those checks should you edit cluster files or ports. Dedicated-server operators should also verify the token, cluster and shard paths, UDP settings, and the correct log files.

Classify the failure before changing anything
The quickest diagnosis is to note who is affected and at which point the failure occurs. Do not change several variables at once; each test should leave you with a clear result.

Repair the game and updates first
File corruption is common after an interrupted update, a crash, or a mod that overwrote content. Steam can replace missing or damaged files without deleting your saves.
- Open Steam and go to Library.
- Right-click Don’t Starve Together and choose Properties.
- Open Installed Files and select Verify Integrity of Game Files.
- Wait for Steam to finish replacing files, then relaunch the game and repeat the original action.
Install the current graphics and audio drivers and confirm that the computer meets the game’s system requirements. Klei’s 2026 troubleshooting guidance warns that a video card with less than 256 MB of dedicated video memory can cause intermittent crashes. That figure is an official warning threshold, not a complete modern performance recommendation; newer operating systems, resolutions, and visual settings can require considerably more memory.

Apply the same update check to every participant and to a dedicated server installation. A client and server on different game versions may fail with missing content, rejected connections, or a crash that looks like a networking problem.
Isolate mods instead of guessing
Mods can affect the client, the server, or both. A world may start with one mod enabled and fail when a second mod loads, so a single successful launch does not prove the full collection is compatible with the current game version.
Perform a clean test
- Disable every client and server mod.
- Restart the game or dedicated process and reproduce the failure on an otherwise unchanged world.
- If the problem disappears, restore mods one at a time. Launch and test after each addition so the first failing mod is identifiable.
- Check that each restored mod is compatible with the current Don’t Starve Together version and that its configuration is valid for the side where it runs.
Review the two lists separately. A server mod can prevent the world from starting even when every client is clean; a client-only mod can crash one player while everyone else remains connected.
Remove files that keep reinstalling
If a broken download survives an in-game disable, close Steam and delete the contents of SteamApps\common\Don't Starve Together\mods\. Then unsubscribe from the corresponding Workshop items before launching again. Unsubscribing matters because Steam can immediately download the same damaged or incompatible files. Re-subscribe only after the no-mod test is stable.
Test the network path and joining permissions
Klei notes that “in general, wireless connections can be unreliable for online gaming.” The most useful isolation test is temporary, not permanent: connect the host directly to the router with a wired Ethernet connection and repeat the same world and player count.

Interpret a wired-connection test

During the test, stop downloads, torrents, cloud synchronization, streaming uploads, and other applications that consume bandwidth or CPU time. Geographic distance between players can also raise latency even when the host and router are healthy. If the host computer is near its CPU, memory, or upload limits, lowering background load or moving the server to stronger hardware is more useful than changing a client setting.

A firewall exception that exists for the game client may not cover a separate server executable. After changing a rule, restart the server and test again from an external connection.
Use a LAN test when everyone is local
For a same-network test, open Browse Games and set the connection filter to LAN. A LAN result separates local discovery from internet listing and port forwarding. If the server appears on LAN but not publicly, focus on online mode, firewall, UDP forwarding, Steam ports, or platform status rather than the world files.
Check online mode and service status
A server started with -offline is LAN-only: it is not publicly listed and Steam-related functionality is disabled. Remove that flag when remote friends need to join. For console players, update the game first, then check Klei’s service status and the console platform’s network status. If both services are healthy and the current game version is installed, use the platform’s networking support for a console-specific fault.
Fix a dedicated server that will not start
Dedicated servers depend on a precise storage hierarchy. A valid executable with the wrong cluster path can look like a failed installation because it cannot find cluster.ini, a shard configuration, or the save data.

These are defaults; a launch option can point the server elsewhere. Inside the selected cluster directory, place cluster.ini. Each shard has its own server.ini, for example Master/server.ini and Caves/server.ini. A missing file, a misspelled directory, or a command line that points to a different cluster will prevent the intended settings from being read.
Run Master and Caves as separate shard processes
Klei’s two-level arrangement starts the two shards with the same cluster name but different shard names. The essential pattern is:
dontstarve_dedicated_server_nullrenderer -cluster MyClusterName -shard Masterdontstarve_dedicated_server_nullrenderer -cluster MyClusterName -shard Caves
Use the executable and shell syntax appropriate to your operating system. The important values are the identical -cluster MyClusterName and the distinct -shard Master or -shard Caves. Start each process from the installation that contains the server executable, and verify that both processes point to the same intended cluster directory.
Validate authentication and launch options
- Token: supply the current server token with
-token. An absent or invalid token can block online authentication even when the world itself loads. - Offline flag: remove
-offlinefor public or Steam-enabled play; keep it only for a LAN-only server. - Cluster and shard: confirm the spelling and capitalization of the path named by
-cluster, then confirm that the shard directory contains its ownserver.ini. - Mods: run once with server mods disabled. A clean startup identifies a mod or mod configuration as the cause.
Read the first meaningful error in the server log rather than the final shutdown line. Later errors often merely report that the process stopped after the original failure.

Set ports and performance options deliberately
Use one set of values per server instance and document them beside the launch command. Klei’s command-line reference defines these relevant options:

Multiple servers on one machine need distinct Steam master and authentication ports as well as distinct game UDP ports. Reusing a port can make one process fail to bind, disappear from listings, or accept no connections. Do not raise the tick rate as a generic lag cure: Klei warns that higher values increase network traffic.
Read the right logs and preserve evidence
For a dedicated server, Klei states that server_log.txt is located wherever the host points the -cluster command-line launch option. Therefore, inspect the actual cluster path in the launch script instead of searching only the default directory.
Common local log locations
- Windows:
Documents\Klei\DoNotStarveTogether\...\Masteror...\Caves. - Linux:
~/.klei/DoNotStarveTogether/..., with the relevantMasterorCavesshard below the cluster. - macOS:
~/Documents/Klei/DoNotStarveTogether/..., again separated by cluster and shard.
When a client crashes or is rejected, preserve client_log.txt from that player’s Klei log directory. Copy the original files before relaunching repeatedly, because a later run can overwrite the useful error context.
What to attach to a bug report
- The affected
client_log.txtand, for a dedicated server, the matchingserver_log.txt. - The relevant save files, with the cluster and shard names.
- Operating system, hardware, game version, and whether the server is self-hosted or rented.
- The complete server command line, including
-cluster,-shard,-port,-offline, and-tokenoptions as applicable. Redact the token value itself. - The client and server mod lists, the player count, connection type, and exact time of the failure.
- The exact error text, not a paraphrase such as “it crashed.”
Use the failure pattern to choose the next test
One computer crashes while others play
Verify that computer’s files, update its graphics and audio drivers, check system requirements, and run with every client mod disabled. The server configuration is unlikely to be the first place to look when the rest of the group remains connected.
The process starts and immediately exits
Confirm the -cluster path, the presence of cluster.ini, each shard’s server.ini, the token, and write permissions. Run without server mods and read the first startup error in server_log.txt. If Master starts but Caves does not, compare the two shard paths and launch arguments rather than rebuilding the whole cluster.

The server is visible but a friend cannot join
Check that -offline is not present, the selected UDP port is open in the host firewall and router, and no second server is using the same Steam or game ports. Test discovery on LAN when possible. If LAN works but internet play fails, the remaining suspects are the external firewall or forwarding path and Steam/platform service status.
Everyone lags at the same time
Stop bandwidth-heavy applications, test the host on Ethernet, inspect host CPU and memory pressure, and temporarily remove server mods. Consider player distance and the host’s upload capacity before changing -tick; the documented default of 15 should remain the baseline.

Bring every client and the server to the same current version, verify files, and then run a no-mod session. Reintroduce mods individually only after the unmodified world remains stable.
Self-hosting or managed hosting?
Renting a managed DST server does not cure a broken client or an incompatible mod, but it can remove several infrastructure variables. The choice is primarily about control versus operational work.

Consider managed hosting when the group needs a server online while the host is away, cannot forward ports, or lacks hardware and backup discipline. Keep self-hosting when you need unrestricted cluster-file access, unusual mod arrangements, or a local LAN server. In either model, retain your own copy of saves and logs.
Escalate with a reproducible report
If file verification, a no-mod test, a wired test, configuration validation, and service checks do not resolve the failure, submit the evidence to Klei’s Don’t Starve Together bug tracker. State the smallest reproducible case: for example, the cluster and shard, player count, whether LAN succeeds, the exact command line, and the first error in the log.

For console-only connectivity problems, update the game and check Klei and the platform network status before opening a platform support case. If both services report healthy operation, include the console model, network type, NAT information if the platform exposes it, and the time of the failed connection.
