To let ore, metal, and other normally restricted items pass through a Valheim portal, set the world modifier to Portal items. On a dedicated server, apply the equivalent startup argument -modifier portals casual. If your command line also contains a preset, put this modifier after -preset so the portal setting takes precedence.

The change affects the shared world, not just one character. Stop the server, back up the world and server files, make the change, restart, and test with ore during a maintenance window or on a copied world.

Valheim normally blocks selected materials from portals. Ore and smelted metals are the examples most players notice: you can carry them between nearby locations only by traveling over land or water unless the world rules are changed.
The Portal items world modifier removes that restriction for the world. The reference for this setting describes the casual value as allowing everything to be portalled, with a specific qualification that tamed animals are not included. In other words, this is the setting to use when your group wants to move metal, ore, and other normally restricted inventory items through portals, but it should not be read as a general animal-teleport rule.

World modifiers are shared rules. Changing one on a dedicated server changes the experience for everyone who joins that world, including players who did not make the change. Coordinate with the other administrators before restarting.
Valheim portal modes at a glance
Valheim exposes the portal rule as named modes in world settings and as values for the dedicated-server modifier. The UI wording and command names should be checked against the game build you run, because updates can change labels or server behavior.

If your goal is specifically “ore through portals,” choose Portal items, not merely a difficulty preset. A preset can set several world rules at once and may overwrite an earlier modifier on the command line.
Change the setting in the world interface
For a world you create or manage through the game interface, open the world’s modifier controls and change the Portals option to Portal items. Depending on the build, this appears on the world creation or world-selection screen under a World modifiers section. Confirm the setting before launching the world.
- Open the world-management screen rather than the character inventory or map screen.
- Open World modifiers and find the Portals category.
- Select Portal items.
- Save or launch the world with that rule enabled.
- Enter the world and test a restricted item, such as ore, by placing it in your inventory and walking through a linked portal.
Menu names can differ between game builds. If you do not see Portal items, look for a portals or world-rules selector and compare its available choices with the four modes in the table above.
Set Portal items on a dedicated server
Iron Gate’s dedicated-server documentation lists Portals: casual, hard, veryhard as valid values and recommends applying modifiers after a preset so the modifier overrides the preset where necessary. Use that ordering when editing the startup command.

1. Stop the server and make a backup
Shut the server down cleanly before editing its launch configuration. Copy the world files and the server files to a separate backup location. A portal-rule change is reversible, but a backup gives you a known state if a setting is mistyped or another maintenance change is made at the same time.
2. Edit the copied startup script
Iron Gate recommends editing a copy of the startup script rather than treating a generated or temporary command as the permanent configuration. On Windows the file is commonly named start_headless_server.bat; on Linux it is commonly start_server.sh.
Open the script in a plain-text editor and locate the server launch line. Do not remove the existing world name, password, backend, or other arguments. You only need to add the portal modifier shown below.
3. Add the dedicated-server value
Add this argument to the launch command:
-modifier portals casual
If the command already uses a preset, the order should look like this fragment:

The important point is positional: put -modifier portals casual after -preset. The official guide warns that a preset can overwrite modifiers that appear before it. Keep the argument on the same launch command as the rest of the server options.
4. Save the script and restart
Save the edited file, then start the server from that script. A restart is required for the process to read the new world modifier. Changing a local copy of the script while the server process is still running will not alter the active world.

5. Verify with a controlled test
Join after the server reports that the world is available. Use a non-production copy or a planned maintenance window and test a restricted item such as ore. Put the item in your character inventory, enter the portal, and confirm that it arrives at the linked destination. Test with an ordinary item as well if you want to distinguish a portal-link problem from an item-rule problem.
Why a preset can make the setting appear not to work
Presets are collections of world rules. If a preset is placed after your portal modifier, it can replace that earlier value. This is the most important command-line ordering issue for this setting:

After changing the order, save the script and restart the server again. Check the actual startup command used by the service or scheduled task; editing an unused copy will have no effect.
Administrative alternative: devcommands and TeleportAll
World modifiers can also be managed administratively through in-game devcommands. The world-modifier reference lists the global key TeleportAll as allowing all items to be teleported. This is an administrative mechanism rather than the normal persistent portal-mode selection, so use it only on a server where the administrators understand the effect.
Before changing a global key, make a fresh backup and tell every administrator what is being changed. Because the key affects the shared world, players may otherwise assume that a portal is behaving according to the normal or casual mode when an administrative override is responsible.
The exact devcommand entry flow can vary with the game build and server permissions. If your current build does not expose TeleportAll, use the dedicated-server modifier instead and confirm the available keys in the build’s administrative interface.

Troubleshoot ore that still will not teleport
The world is still on Normal
Reopen the world modifiers and inspect the Portals value. The required choice is Portal items, not Normal. On a dedicated server, confirm that the launch line contains -modifier portals casual.
The modifier is before the preset
Move the portal modifier to the right of -preset, save the script, and restart. A preset can overwrite an earlier modifier even when the earlier text is present in the file.
The server was not restarted
World settings are read when the server starts. Stop the process cleanly and launch it again from the edited script. Then reconnect and retest; changing a file without restarting leaves the running process unchanged.
You changed the wrong world or script
Dedicated servers can have multiple world names, copies of a startup script, or service definitions. Verify that the script you edited is the one used to launch the world your group is joining. A test on a copied world is useful because it prevents a configuration check from altering the production world.
A boss is active and the mode is hard
The No boss Portal / hard mode prevents portal use while a boss is active. If the portal itself cannot be used during that condition, switching to Portal items is the mode that matches an unrestricted-item goal.
You selected No Portal
The No Portal / veryhard mode disables portals in the world. No item can pass through a portal while that rule is active; change the portal mode and restart before testing again.

You expected a tamed animal to follow the item rule
The casual description specifically excludes tamed animals. Portal items is therefore not a promise that a tamed animal can be sent through with your inventory. Treat item transport and creature transport as separate questions.
Maintenance details worth checking
Portal settings are often changed during broader dedicated-server maintenance. Iron Gate’s guide documents the Steam-backend default port range as 2456–2457, server save locations, backup intervals, and the -crossplay option. Review those settings when you edit the startup script so an otherwise unrelated maintenance change does not interrupt access.
Keep the original script and your backup until players have confirmed that the new rule works. If the change causes an unexpected experience, restore the prior script, restart, and use the backup to return the world to its earlier state.
Choosing the right rule for your group
Use Portal items / casual when logistics are the priority
Choose this mode for a cooperative world where transporting ore and metal through established portal routes is part of the intended play loop. It removes the item restriction while retaining portals as a world-travel system.
Use Normal when you want the vanilla progression constraint
Normal preserves the standard non-portalable-item rules. It suits groups that want portal convenience for ordinary travel but expect metal transport to require ships, carts, or overland trips.
Use No boss Portal / hard for event-gated travel
Hard is the middle option for groups that want portal restrictions during boss activity without disabling portals permanently. It changes when portals can be used rather than creating an all-items transport rule.
Use No Portal / veryhard for a portal-free world
Veryhard removes the portal system from the world entirely. Select it only when the group agrees that every long-distance journey should use the remaining travel methods.
