The safest first run in Don’t Starve Together is a planned team run: choose Endless or Survival deliberately, gather flint, twigs, grass and logs before building a permanent camp, avoid unnecessary fights, cook in a crock pot, assign clear jobs, and agree on a revival method before anyone dies. In Survival, a full-party wipe starts a 120-second countdown; if nobody revives during that window, the world ends. The exact figures below come from community-maintained guides and can change with patches, so verify them against the current game version.
Godlike.Host offers hosted Don't Starve Together servers with its own game panel, SFTP access and free DDoS protection, if you would rather not host it yourself.
Choose the right mode for your first world
Mode selection determines how costly a mistake is. If your group is learning controls, recipes and seasonal preparation at the same time, a forgiving mode lets you practice without deleting the world after one bad night.

| Mode | What happens after deaths | Best use |
|---|---|---|
| Survival | When every player has died, a 120-second countdown begins. If no ghost is revived before it expires, the world ends and a new one is generated. Restarting the server resets the timer. | Default rules and the strongest teamwork challenge. |
| Endless | The world continues even when every player is a ghost, giving the team time to find a revival method. | First runs, teaching sessions and groups that do not want a wipe to erase progress. |
| Wilderness | A dead player respawns at a random location instead of appearing as a ghost. | Low-pressure experimentation; the separated player must still find the group again. |
Community guides commonly suggest Relaxed or Endless for a first run. Survival is still a good choice when everyone understands that a total wipe is a genuine world-ending event and has agreed on a revival plan.
Pick a character for your group’s learning goals
No character is universally established as the easiest. Different guides favor Wigfrid, Willow or Wendy, so treat “best beginner character” claims as play-style advice rather than a definitive ranking.

| Character | Why beginners may choose them | What to remember |
|---|---|---|
| Wilson | A flexible, neutral starting point with no unusual team requirement. | Good for learning gathering, crafting and base routines before specializing. |
| Wendy | Her ghostly twin can make early combat more forgiving. | Her advantage is most useful when the team must handle small threats while exploring. |
| Wigfrid, Willow and other specialists | Each can suit a particular combat, fire or survival preference. | Guides disagree on which is most forgiving; choose around the player’s habits and the team’s composition. |
For a first four-player session, a neutral Wilson, a Wendy for safer early combat and two players willing to specialize in building, farming or scouting is a practical arrangement. The important decision is not a tier list; it is whether every player understands their job.
Survive the first three days
Gather before you commit to a base
Spend the opening daylight moving through nearby terrain and collecting flint, twigs, cut grass and logs. Flint enables early tools, while twigs, grass and logs support torches, tools, traps and the first camp structures. Hold off on a permanent base until the group has also found rocks and gold; building too early can leave you stranded without the materials needed to expand.

A pickaxe lets the team secure rocks, and an axe turns nearby trees into a dependable log supply.
- Keep moving during daylight. One player can map the route while others harvest, but call out flint, gold, beefalo herds, pig settlements and useful food so the group does not duplicate work.
- Carry emergency night fuel. Grass, logs and other burnable materials should be in someone’s inventory before dusk. A torch is a fallback, not a reason to delay collecting fuel.
- Delay optional combat. New players gain more from learning food, light and crafting loops than from fighting every creature they meet.
Eat simple food while learning
Berries and carrots are sufficient for early learning. Pick them as you travel and avoid taking damage to secure a marginal meal. A player who reaches the first night with food, fuel and basic tools contributes more than one who has collected rare loot but cannot stay alive.

Place the camp where the map helps you
Guides commonly recommend establishing the base near beefalo or pigs, whose presence can provide protection from some threats. Do not build so close that the group accidentally provokes them; leave room for paths, storage and later crafting stations. Once rocks and gold are secured, place the permanent science and cooking infrastructure where every role can reach it quickly.
Build a co-op base that supports the whole team
Assign jobs before the first night
A simple division of labor prevents four players from gathering the same resource while nobody prepares food or fuel. One community guide recommends three core roles:
- Builder: secures rocks, gold, logs and crafting stations, then expands storage and camp utilities.
- Farmer and cook: collects ingredients, operates crock pots and protects a reserve of food for winter.
- Explorer: maps new territory, identifies herds and settlements, and reports resources and hazards back to camp.
With four or more players, split the explorer role into a short-range scout and a dedicated resource gatherer. Roles are responsibilities, not permanent classes: swap them when a player has the supplies or time to help another job.

Separate working stock from winter reserves
Use clearly marked chests or different sides of the base for daily ingredients, fuel and emergency supplies. Tell everyone which food is available now and which food is reserved for winter. One co-op guide specifically warns that a teammate eating the stored food before winter can become a serious group problem. A visible sign, chest label or spoken rule is enough to prevent that conflict.
Keep information shared
Call out the location of gold, safe routes, aggressive creatures and unfinished tasks. When an explorer leaves, say when they expect to return and what they are carrying. If a player goes missing, the team should know whether to search, hold position or continue preparing the base.
Use crock pots and manage sanity
Cook early instead of eating every ingredient raw
Crock pots are efficient because recipes can restore hunger and, in some cases, sanity at the same time. You do not need to memorize the entire recipe system on day one: learning four or five dependable recipes covers much of the early game. Keep a small ingredient reserve so the cook can make a complete meal after an expedition rather than consuming every berry and carrot immediately.

- Give the cook a steady stream of berries, vegetables and meat instead of random single ingredients.
- Store finished meals where the whole team can reach them, but keep the winter reserve separate.
- When a player returns injured or mentally unstable, prioritize a meal that addresses both hunger and sanity if the available recipe allows it.
Recognize the low-sanity danger
Low sanity can spawn shadow creatures that attack the player. One guide places the danger threshold below 15%, but the exact behavior and threshold can be patch-dependent. Treat a rapidly falling sanity meter as an immediate team problem: return to camp, eat an appropriate cooked meal and avoid sending that player alone into darkness.
Ghosts affect the living team
Ghosts are not harmless spectators. A community wiki reports about 3.3 sanity points drained per minute for each ghost, while another guide gives a broader 3.3–10 points-per-minute range. Because the sources disagree and neither figure is tied to an official patch note, use the practical rule rather than a precise timer: revive ghosts promptly and do not let several ghosts linger while the living team is already near a sanity crisis.
Prepare for the first winter before it arrives
Winter preparation starts while the map still feels safe. The base team should have a dependable food pipeline, enough logs and grass for light, and a clear plan for who stays near camp and who explores. Do not spend the entire stored food supply during autumn simply because it is available; the reserve exists for days when travel, cold or combat interrupts gathering.

- Compatible with Wide Screens - To ensure compatibility with the dual monitor mount, your each monitor must meet three conditions at the same time: First, computer screens size range: 13 to 32 inches. Second, screen weight range: 4.4 to 19.8 lbs. Third, the back of the monitor screen must have VESA mounting holes with a pitch of 75x75mm or 100x100mm.
- Regarding the compatibility with desks - Your desk must meet three conditions at the same time: First, desk material: Only wooden desks are recommended, plastic or glass desks cannot be used. Second, desk thickness range: 0.59" - 3.54". Third, the bottom of the desk should not have any cross beams or panels, as this will interfere with installation. We recommend carefully checking that your desk and monitors meets all above conditions before purchasing.
- Dual C-Clamp Hold - Worried your dual monitors might wobble or slip? Our upgraded base uses a larger platform plus a dual C-clamp structure to lock the dual monitor arm firmly to your desk. Each arm safely keeps your screens steady while you type, click and game—no shaking, no sliding, just a clean and secure setup you can trust every day. It also provides Grommet Mounting installation choice, both options ensure stable and secure fixation for your 0.59" - 3.54" desk.
- Full-Motion Adjustment For Comfortable View - Pull the screen closer when you’re deep in a spreadsheet, push it back to watch videos, or rotate to portrait for coding — moving everything smoothly with just one hand. The monitor stand offers +85°/-50° tilt, ±90° swivel and 360° rotation. Raise your monitor up to 15.75″ to support a healthy sitting posture. Whether you’re working from home, gaming through the night, or switching between video calls and documents, getting the screens to your natural line of sight helps relieve neck, shoulder and back strain so you can stay focused longer with less fatigue.
- Keep Your Desk Organized: By lifting both screens off the desktop, this dual monitor stand opens up valuable space for your keyboard, notebook, docking station or a simple, clutter-free work area. Built-in cable management guides wires along the arms, keeping cords out of sight and out of the way. Enjoy a tidy, modern workstation that looks as good as it feels to use.
Use the role system to winter-proof the camp
- Builder: checks that camp infrastructure and fuel can support repeated nights without a risky emergency expedition.
- Cook: converts available ingredients into efficient meals and protects the winter chest.
- Explorer: completes nearby resource runs before conditions become dangerous and marks routes the group can follow safely.
- Everyone: returns before darkness when carrying scarce supplies and reports anything that could threaten the food plan.
The most common beginner winter mistake is not a single missing item; it is arriving at the season change with no agreement about who owns the remaining food, fuel and scouting duties. Make those decisions while the team still has time to correct them.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Know every revival option
A death is recoverable only if the group understands which revival tools exist and who can use them. Ghost players can revive themselves at Touch Stones, Meat Effigies or with Life Giving Amulets. A living teammate can revive a ghost by using a Telltale Heart.
Recommended Free Tools
| Method | User | Planning implication |
|---|---|---|
| Touch Stone | Ghost player | Mark its location on the shared map so a dead player can reach it. |
| Meat Effigy | Ghost player, if one was prepared | Make revival part of base planning rather than an improvised response. |
| Life Giving Amulet | Ghost player | Keep it available before dangerous expeditions. |
| Telltale Heart | Living teammate revives the ghost | The reviver pays a cost, so do not assume unlimited chain revivals. |
Expect a weakened return
A revived character returns with health at 50, hunger at two-thirds of maximum and sanity at half of maximum, according to community guides. Bring that player back to camp, feed them, restore sanity and avoid sending them directly into another fight.
Understand the total-wipe clock
In Survival, the 120-second countdown begins only after every player has died. If no ghost is revived during that window, the world ends and a new one is generated. Restarting the server resets the timer, so a restart is not a substitute for reviving someone. Assign one player to execute the revival while another gathers the required materials; searching with the entire team can waste the only time you have.
One guide warns that a group without a revival plan can lose a player permanently by about day 30. The day estimate is not an official guarantee, but it captures the strategic lesson: establish your revival system long before the team reaches its first month.
Co-op habits that prevent avoidable wipes
Use a pre-expedition checklist
- Everyone has food, light and enough inventory space.
- The group knows the destination and the return route.
- At least one player remains capable of reviving another.
- The cook knows how much food is being taken from storage.
- The base has a reserve that the expedition is not allowed to consume.
Recover from a death without creating another one
- Identify the dead player’s location and whether they are a ghost or have already revived elsewhere.
- Check which revival method is nearest and who has the materials.
- Keep one living player safe at camp instead of sending every survivor into danger.
- Revive, return the weakened player to food and sanity support, then replace the consumed revival supplies.
When the group keeps failing
| Symptom | Likely cause | Correction |
|---|---|---|
| Everyone is hungry by the second night | Players gathered materials but no one owned cooking. | Assign a cook and start a crock-pot ingredient route immediately. |
| Camp has tools but no permanent progress | The team built before securing rocks and gold. | Pause construction and send the explorer to locate those materials. |
| Multiple shadow creatures appear | Sanity fell too low, possibly worsened by lingering ghosts. | Return to camp, use a sanity-restoring meal and prioritize revivals. |
| A revived player dies again quickly | They returned with 50 health, two-thirds hunger and half sanity. | Feed and stabilize them before another expedition or fight. |
| The team reaches winter with empty storage | Daily eating consumed the reserve. | Separate ordinary food from a clearly labeled winter chest and enforce that rule. |
| A Survival world disappears after a wipe | No ghost was revived during the 120-second post-wipe window. | Use Endless while learning, or prepare revival tools and a named responder in Survival. |
A reliable beginner routine
For your next session, use this sequence: choose Endless or Survival with the wipe rule understood; select characters for complementary strengths rather than chasing a supposedly universal easiest pick; gather flint, twigs, grass and logs; avoid optional fights; locate rocks and gold before committing to a base; place camp near useful protection; assign builder, cook/farmer and explorer duties; learn four or five crock-pot recipes; label a winter reserve; mark every revival option; and review the plan before the first dangerous expedition. Exact timers, sanity drain and other numbers are community estimates that may change, so check the current patch or in-game behavior when precision matters.
