The browser message is only a catch-all: configuration syntax, a redirect loop, missing runtime components, incorrect permissions, an unhandled application exception, a failed database connection, or exhausted capacity can all produce it. Start with the exact request and the new host’s access and error logs, then isolate DNS, redirects, runtime, files, database, and capacity in that order. Make each change reversible and verify representative old and new URLs before declaring the migration fixed.

What a 500 error means after a migration
MDN defines the 500 Internal Server Error response as a server encountering an unexpected condition that prevented it from fulfilling a request. It does not identify which component failed. A site can return 500 for every URL, for one path pattern, or only for dynamic pages while static files still work.

Migration changes several variables at once: DNS may point to a different machine, web-server configuration may be regenerated, rewrite rules may be interpreted in a different directory context, file ownership may change, runtime extensions may be absent, environment secrets may not be present, and the database may be on a new network. Treat the status code as the starting signal, not the diagnosis.
The fastest route to the cause is correlation. Record one failing request, note its UTC timestamp, and inspect the new server’s access and error logs at that moment. The error-log message—such as a syntax error, permission denial, uncaught exception, connection refusal, or worker exhaustion—is more useful than the generic page shown to visitors.

First-response triage: capture the failure before changing anything
Do this before editing configuration. A precise baseline lets you tell whether each change improves the situation or merely moves the failure.
- Test four representative requests. Request the homepage, a known-good static asset such as an image or stylesheet, one migrated content URL, and one URL that currently fails. Use a private browser window and a command-line request so cached redirects do not hide the result.
- Record the request details. Write down the hostname, path, HTTP method, response status, response headers, final destination (if redirected), and the exact UTC time. Note whether the error is site-wide, limited to a directory, limited to POST requests, or limited to database-backed pages.
- Capture headers without downloading the body. For example,
curl -sS -D - -o /dev/null https://example.com/shows the status and headers returned by the active host. Repeat it for an old URL and its intended new URL. - Open the access and error logs for that minute. Search by request path, status code, and timestamp. If the log uses a different timezone, convert the recorded UTC time before searching.
- Preserve a rollback point. Export the current virtual-host or server-block configuration, copy the relevant
.htaccessor rewrite file, and take a database backup before changing production settings.
Do not infer the cause from a branded error page, a browser extension, or a single synthetic check. A 500 generated by the application, a reverse proxy, and the web server can look identical to a visitor but leaves different log entries.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsCheck DNS and confirm which server is answering
When a move involves a new host, first prove that the request is reaching the machine you are troubleshooting. Query the domain through more than one independent DNS resolver and compare the returned address with the new server’s address. Then inspect the request in the new host’s access log. A correct DNS record with no matching request usually means you are testing a cache, proxy, load balancer, firewall, or another hostname.
Use multiple viewpoints
- Resolve the apex domain and any
wwwhostname separately; they may have different records. - Check both IPv4 and IPv6. An old IPv6 record can send some visitors to the previous server while IPv4 reaches the new one.
- Test from a network outside your office or VPN. Local resolver caches can retain the old address during propagation.
- Compare the response headers and server logs from the old and new machines while traffic shifts. Google recommends watching both access and error logs during an infrastructure move.
Do not “fix” application code while DNS still directs part of your audience elsewhere. If the old server returns 200 and the new server returns 500, the incident is a routing or deployment problem until proven otherwise. Keep the old environment available long enough to roll back DNS safely.
Remove redirect and rewrite loops
A migration often adds rules for HTTP-to-HTTPS, non-www-to-www, an old domain, changed directories, or a new content-management-system front controller. A rule that was valid on the old server can loop or fail on the new one. MDN notes that redirects may be configured in server settings or .htaccess, and that a loop introduced by a configuration change can result in a 500 response.

Recognize the common loop patterns
- Scheme loop: the edge proxy terminates HTTPS, but the application believes the request is HTTP and redirects back to HTTPS on every request.
- Hostname loop: one rule adds
wwwwhile another removes it. - Domain loop: the old-domain rule sends traffic to the new domain, while a copied rule sends the new domain back.
- Path loop: a rule appends a directory prefix that another rule removes.
- Front-controller recursion: a rewritten request is processed again because the exclusion for the application entry file was lost.
Reduce to a minimal known-good rule set
- Temporarily disable nonessential migration redirects and save the previous file so you can restore it.
- Keep one canonical-domain rule and one application routing rule only. Test an old URL and a new canonical URL separately.
- Inspect every hop with
curl -sS -I -L --max-redirs 10 https://example.com/old-path. A valid migration should end at the intended canonical URL, not revisit an earlier host, scheme, or path. - Reintroduce rules one at a time. After each addition, test a representative old URL, a canonical URL, and a static asset.
Apache-specific checks
For Apache, verify that mod_rewrite is loaded and that the directory permits overrides before relying on .htaccess. The basic directive is RewriteEngine On; some hosts also require an appropriate RewriteBase or a different symlink policy. A missing module, a directive forbidden by the host, or a syntax error can produce an immediate 500. Use the server’s configuration-test command and the error log rather than guessing which directive is unsupported. If the new host uses a different web server, translate the rules into that server’s syntax instead of copying .htaccess unchanged.
If one edit causes every request to fail, restore the last known-good configuration immediately, reload the server, and then add a single change in a staging or maintenance window.
Compare files, runtime, and environment settings
Once DNS and redirects are stable, compare the deployed application with the source environment. A migration can omit hidden files, generated directories, vendor dependencies, uploads, or a configuration file that was excluded from version control.
File-tree and document-root checks
- Confirm that the virtual host points to the directory containing the deployed entry file, not the project parent or an empty release directory.
- Compare file names and case exactly. A path that worked on a case-insensitive development system can fail on a case-sensitive Linux host.
- Verify that dependency directories and generated caches exist and match the deployed application version.
- Check that uploaded media and user-generated files were transferred, mounted, or stored in the configured object store.
- Ensure the application’s entry file, static assets, and required include files are readable by the web-server account.
Runtime and extension parity
Confirm that the new host runs the runtime version and extensions required by the application. Missing database drivers, image libraries, encryption modules, or language packages commonly surface as unhandled exceptions and therefore 500 responses. Do not apply a universal version or permission recipe: the correct combination depends on the operating system, web server, framework or CMS, and host policy. Use the exact exception in the error log and the platform’s deployment documentation.
Environment variables and secrets
Check that production environment variables were installed on the new host and are visible to the process that serves web requests, not only to an interactive shell. Verify application keys, mail credentials, API endpoints, storage paths, trusted-proxy settings, and feature flags. A missing secret can prevent the application from booting, while an old hostname can send it to a database that no longer exists.

Verify permissions without weakening the whole site
Incorrect file permissions are an explicit 500 cause identified by MDN. The web-server user must be able to read application files and traverse each parent directory. Folders that the application must write—such as cache, session, or upload directories—also need write access under the service account or its group.
Inspect ownership and effective permissions on the document root, the entry file, configuration files, and writable directories. Look for “permission denied” or “cannot open” entries in the error log. Avoid making the entire tree world-writable or exposing secrets merely to make the error disappear. Correct ownership, group membership, access-control lists, and the host’s security policy instead. After changing permissions, retest a static file and a dynamic page separately.
Test the application-to-database connection
A page that depends on a database can fail while static assets remain healthy. Google identifies a broken database connection as a valid cause of failed pages, so treat database diagnostics as a separate branch rather than assuming the web server is at fault.
Validate the complete connection path
- Confirm the configured database hostname resolves from the new server and uses the intended port.
- Check the username, password, database name, and authentication method against the new environment.
- Verify that the database permits connections from the new server’s address and that firewalls or security groups allow the port.
- Check that the expected schema, tables, migrations, and database encoding are present. A successful TCP connection does not prove that the application’s schema is current.
- Review database-server logs for rejected credentials, exhausted connections, failed migrations, or crashes at the same UTC time as the web request.
Use a least-privilege application account and rotate credentials if they were copied through an insecure channel. If the application fails only on writes, inspect transaction permissions, disk space, and read-only replicas rather than replacing the entire connection configuration.
Check memory, workers, timeouts, and upstream dependencies
Migration traffic can expose capacity limits that were not visible on the old host. Google says it crawls a new site more heavily after migration because redirected requests from the old site add to normal crawling. If the new server has fewer CPU cores, less memory, smaller process limits, or a smaller PHP-FPM or equivalent worker pool, requests may begin failing immediately after launch.

Measure the layer that is exhausting
| Symptom | Evidence to inspect | Likely corrective action |
|---|---|---|
| All dynamic pages fail while static files work | Runtime startup errors, worker-pool logs, memory or process-limit messages | Fix the runtime configuration, restore missing extensions, or increase workers and memory within the host’s limits |
| Only slow reports or searches fail | Request timeouts, database slow-query logs, upstream timeout messages | Optimize the query or job, adjust a justified timeout, and prevent long work from blocking web workers |
| Intermittent 500 responses under load | CPU, memory, connection counts, worker saturation, and restart events | Reduce concurrency pressure, add capacity, or tune pools after measuring peak demand |
| Database-backed pages fail while cached pages work | Connection-pool exhaustion, refused connections, database resource alerts | Correct pool sizing and database capacity, then retest uncached requests |
Check available memory, CPU pressure, process and file-descriptor limits, database connections, worker-pool utilization, and reverse-proxy or application timeouts. Also inspect upstream services such as caches, queues, object storage, and payment or authentication APIs if the error log names them. Increase a limit only after identifying which limit is reached; a larger timeout can hide a saturated dependency and make recovery slower.
Use logs to choose the next branch
The error log should determine the next action. Typical messages map to different fixes:
| Log evidence | What it usually indicates | Next check |
|---|---|---|
| Syntax error, invalid directive, or configuration test failure | Web-server or rewrite configuration is not valid on the new host | Restore the last known-good file, run the host’s configuration test, and add directives incrementally |
| Permission denied, cannot open file, or failed include | Ownership, mode, ACL, or document-root mismatch | Check the service account’s effective access to every parent directory and target file |
| Uncaught exception or missing class/function | Application bug, missing dependency, extension, or environment variable | Compare deployed dependencies and runtime extensions with the source environment |
| Connection refused, authentication failed, or unknown database | Database host, credentials, network policy, or schema problem | Test the complete application-to-database path from the new server |
| Out of memory, worker limit, or upstream timeout | Capacity or process-pool exhaustion | Measure memory, workers, connections, and request duration during a failure |
Correlate the web-server log, application log, database log, and infrastructure metrics by UTC time. A proxy may log a 500 while the application logs the underlying exception; both entries are needed to identify the first failure.

Verify redirects, content, and crawlability after the fix
A green homepage is not proof that a migration is healthy. Test the URL classes that matter to users and search engines.
- Old URLs: confirm that each mapped legacy URL returns the intended permanent redirect (301 or 308) and reaches the correct canonical destination in one sensible chain.
- Canonical URLs: confirm that the final page returns 200 and renders its database-backed content.
- Static assets: load images, JavaScript, CSS, fonts, and downloadable files from representative directories.
- Forms and authenticated flows: test sign-in, session creation, submissions, password reset, and any role-restricted page with a non-production test account.
- Removed content: ensure intentionally deleted URLs return an intentional 404 or 410 rather than a misleading 200 or a server error.
- Logs and monitoring: watch access and error logs while running the tests and continue monitoring through the next traffic peak.
- Search signals: crawl a sample of the URL map, inspect affected URLs and Crawl Stats in Search Console, update XML sitemaps, and confirm that migration-only blocks are gone.
Google specifically recommends testing the new site, mapping old URLs, checking redirects, monitoring logs, and ensuring enough capacity. During an infrastructure move, remove temporary robots.txt disallows or noindex directives once the replacement site is ready; leaving them in place can make a technically repaired site invisible to crawlers.

A decision framework for selecting the remedy
When several symptoms appear, rank each possible fix using five questions:
- Failure layer: Is the evidence in DNS and host routing, web-server configuration, redirect rules, runtime/application code, the database, permissions, or capacity?
- Blast radius: Does one URL fail, one path pattern fail, or does every request fail? Start with the smallest reproducible case.
- Evidence quality: Prefer an exact, timestamped log message and a reproducible request over a generic browser screen.
- Recovery safety: Can you roll back the change, restore a backup, or reintroduce one rule at a time?
- Post-fix health: Do status codes, redirect targets, crawlability, capacity metrics, and error rates remain correct after traffic returns?
This framework prevents a risky “try everything” response. For example, changing permissions cannot repair a DNS record, and increasing memory cannot repair a redirect loop. Fix the layer that produced the evidence, then retest the same request captured during triage.

Prevent the next migration 500
- Build a complete old-to-new URL map and test it before changing DNS.
- Run the new stack in a staging hostname with production-like runtime extensions, environment variables, rewrite rules, and database schema.
- Automate configuration syntax checks and a smoke test for the homepage, static asset, dynamic page, form, login flow, and database query.
- Keep a tested backup of files, uploads, database data, DNS records, and the last known-good server configuration.
- Plan capacity for the post-migration crawl surge as well as normal visitors; monitor memory, workers, connections, latency, and error rates.
- Prepare access to both old and new server logs, and keep the old host available for a controlled rollback.
- Use a maintenance checklist that includes removal of temporary
robots.txtandnoindexblocks.
When to escalate
Escalate to the hosting or infrastructure team when you cannot access the error logs, DNS points to an unmanaged proxy, the host rejects required server directives, or resource limits are enforced outside your account. Provide the UTC timestamp, hostname, path, method, response headers, request ID if available, and the relevant log excerpt. For an application vendor or developer, include the runtime version, deployment revision, exception stack, database error, and the smallest request that reproduces the failure. This evidence is far more actionable than reporting only that “the site shows a 500.”
Bottom line
Fixing a post-migration 500 is an evidence problem, not a guessing contest. Confirm the active server, capture one failing request, read the error log, simplify redirects, verify files and runtime dependencies, test database connectivity, measure capacity, and then validate old URLs, new pages, assets, forms, and crawl signals. Make one reversible change at a time and keep monitoring after recovery so a temporary success does not conceal a loop, capacity ceiling, or blocked migration.
