Deadlock’s New York-flavored supernatural setting is practically built for turning familiar city characters into battlefield oddities. Here are four unofficial hero pitches: a subway conductor who reroutes danger, a bodega cat who commands neighborhood strays, a rooftop water-tower spirit who controls the skyline, and a park chess hustler who makes every fight a gambit. Their abilities are fan-made proposals, not existing Deadlock heroes or official design plans.
Four unofficial Deadlock hero concepts
Each pitch starts with an everyday city archetype and pushes it into the game’s occult, combat-ready world. The mechanics below are suggestions for how each identity might play, not claims about Deadlock’s current abilities or Valve’s design criteria.

The Conductor
Hook: A subway conductor who treats the battlefield like a train line—and every enemy like a passenger who missed their stop.

Combat identity: The Conductor could mark a short route on the ground, then dash along it with a brief burst of speed. A second ability might place a signal that slows or redirects enemies who cross its path. The trade-off is commitment: the route is powerful when planned, but opponents can read it and avoid the line.
Personality and story tension: Immaculately polite announcements contrast with a growing suspicion that the Conductor has been carrying the same impossible passengers for decades. Does the job keep the city moving—or keep something trapped below it?
The Bodega Familiar
Hook: The neighborhood bodega cat has become a small, imperious spirit with an entire block’s worth of strays at its command.

Combat identity: The Familiar could send a spectral stray to scout a lane, briefly revealing enemies it passes. Another ability might call a pack to harry a target, applying pressure over time rather than delivering a single burst. To keep the concept readable, the cat itself would remain vulnerable when separated from its summoned pack.
Personality and story tension: It accepts tribute in the form of snacks, ignores anyone who calls it a pet, and seems to know which residents will not make it home tonight. The joke is that it demands loyalty; the unsettling possibility is that it has been collecting favors for a long time.
The Water-Tower Warden
Hook: A rooftop water tower has awakened as a guardian of the neighborhood’s high ground.
Silhouette and inspiration: Think of a rusted cylindrical tank perched on jointed iron legs, wrapped in old pipes and trailing ropes of dripping water. A small warning light blinks where a face might be. From a distance, it could be mistaken for rooftop machinery—until it steps across the skyline.

Combat identity: The Warden could spill a narrow stream that carries it a short distance across a roof or ledge, then leave a slick patch that complicates pursuit. A defensive ability might raise a temporary wall of pressurized water. Its strength would come from controlling space and protecting an approach, not chasing down distant targets.
Personality and story tension: It is a patient caretaker that remembers every tenant who has ever drawn water from its pipes. But its memory is measured in buildings and generations, not individual lives; it may defend a block even when the people living there want to leave.
The Park Hustler
Hook: A chess hustler from the park turns every duel into a wager—and every piece into a threat.

Combat identity: The Hustler could place one temporary chess piece at a time, each shaping a different patch of the fight. A rook might block a narrow angle, while a knight marks a short, unusual dash route. The player would need to choose where to set the board before committing; the opponent’s challenge would be reading the setup and refusing the bait.
Personality and story tension: The Hustler insists that nothing is free—not even advice. Their swagger hides a fear of being predictable, which is a dangerous weakness for someone whose magic depends on making the other player think several moves ahead.

All four concepts take a recognizable city scene—the subway, the corner store, the rooftop, the park—and give it a supernatural turn. That approach echoes PC Gamer’s interpretation of newer Deadlock characters through New York cues such as park chess, pigeons, and rats; it is a journalist’s reading of the setting, not a published Valve design brief. PC Gamer’s October 2026 feature discusses those urban references and the speculation around what might come next.

The Conductor shapes routes, the Bodega Familiar scouts and applies swarm pressure, the Warden holds space, and the Hustler sets tactical traps. A strong concept needs more than a costume: its visual hook should point toward a recognizable way to play, while its story gives that hook a reason to exist.

What Valve has and hasn’t invited from players
Valve has experimented with early feedback and player choice, but that history should not be mistaken for an open call for character submissions.
Hero Labs sought feedback on early designs
In its October 2024 update, Valve described Hero Labs as a way to gather player feedback on hero designs while they were still in very early phases. The official Deadlock forum update explains that purpose.
The 2025 voting booth let players choose an unlock order
On August 18, 2025, Valve said it was pausing Hero Labs while developing a set of six new heroes. It introduced staggered unlocks and a voting booth in the Hideout so players could decide which hero unlocked next, asking, “Who do you want to see unlocked next?” Valve’s “Six New Heroes” update documents that rollout. It describes a past release mechanism, not a current policy for accepting fan pitches.
Rat King is a precedent, not a submission pipeline
PC Gamer reported in October 2026 that Rat King began as a fan concept before joining Deadlock’s roster. That is an intriguing individual precedent, but it does not establish a formal route for submitting ideas or suggest that other fan concepts are likely to be adopted. PC Gamer’s report on Rat King also cites a third-party voice-line viewer’s count of 126 lines for Rat Swarm; that figure is a reported game-data tally, not a Valve-published statistic.
Deadlock’s official forums have visible Community Hero Ideas and Art Feedback sections for fans who want to share work with the community. Their existence is not, by itself, evidence that Valve accepts submissions for development. Community Hero Ideas and Art Feedback are places to discuss concepts with other players.
