Short answer: no, DOOM 64 is not currently free on the Epic Games Store. Epic gave the enhanced PC version away for a limited time from August 18 through August 25, 2022. If you claimed it during that window, it should remain in the Epic Games account library used to claim it. Everyone else must purchase the Windows version through Epic’s current listing.

What happened to the free DOOM 64 offer?
The headline was historically accurate, but it is misleading when reposted without a date. DOOM 64 was a limited-time Epic Games Store giveaway, not a permanent free game and not a free-to-play title. The promotion ended on August 25, 2022.
There are three different situations to distinguish:

- Free-to-play: This does not describe DOOM 64. It is a paid single-player game outside a giveaway.
The official Epic product page is now a normal paid Windows listing. Prices and discounts vary by region and date, so check the store page while signed in rather than relying on an old dollar or euro price.
How to download DOOM 64 from Epic
If you claimed it in 2022
- Install or open the Epic Games Launcher.
- Sign in to the Epic account used during the giveaway.
- Open Library.
- Search for DOOM 64. Remove restrictive library filters if it does not appear immediately.
- Select Install.
- Choose an installation folder and confirm.
- Launch the game from the Epic library after installation finishes.
Simply visiting the store page during the giveaway was not enough. The game had to be claimed and added to the correct Epic account.
If you missed the giveaway
- Open the official DOOM 64 Epic listing.
- Sign in to an Epic account, or create one.
- Confirm the price and storefront region shown on the page.
- Select Buy Now and complete checkout.
- Open the Epic Games Launcher and select Library.
- Choose DOOM 64, select Install, and pick the installation location.
- Start the game from the library once the download and installation are complete.
An Epic account is required to claim or purchase the game and download it through Epic. The purchase should be treated as an Epic Windows entitlement; do not assume it transfers to Steam, GOG, PlayStation, Xbox, or Nintendo Switch.
Does Epic’s version require a Bethesda.net account?
No separate Bethesda.net account is required to play DOOM 64 through the Epic Games Store. You still need the Epic account associated with the claim or purchase.

If the game unexpectedly asks for Bethesda sign-in, restart the Epic Games Launcher, confirm that the game was installed through the official Epic client, and check current Bethesda support guidance. Creating an additional account should not be necessary for the Epic version.
DOOM 64 PC system requirements
Bethesda’s published requirements are modest, but systems below the minimum specification are officially unsupported.

These are the specifications listed by Bethesda and Epic. Bethesda does not use the page to promise support for every newer Windows or hardware configuration. In particular, the published operating-system requirement names Windows 10; Windows 11 may work in practice, but should not be described as officially confirmed here without a newer statement from Bethesda or Epic.
What version of DOOM 64 is on Epic?
Epic sells the enhanced modern release of the 1997 Nintendo 64 game. It is not an emulated Nintendo 64 ROM and it is not the original PC DOOM.

The modern edition was released in 2020 and is associated with id Software and Nightdive Studios, with Bethesda Softworks as publisher. According to the official listings, it includes:
- The original DOOM 64 campaign with more than 30 levels
- The additional Lost Levels
- Widescreen support
- Native 60 frames-per-second support
- Improved mouse-and-keyboard controls
- Controller support
- Single-player gameplay
- Cloud saves listed on Epic
Bethesda’s edition guidance confirms that the purchase is the enhanced 2020 version. It is based on the 1997 Nintendo 64 release, but it is not the same thing as playing original hardware.
How to fix common Epic and launch problems
The game is missing from my Epic library
Try these checks in order:
- Confirm that you are signed into the Epic account used for the 2022 claim or purchase.
- Search the entire library and clear filters that hide installed or uninstalled games.
- Restart the Epic Games Launcher.
- Check whether the game was ever actually claimed. Remembering the giveaway or opening its store page does not prove that the entitlement was added.
- If the entry remains missing, use Epic support with the account and transaction information available.
A new Epic account cannot retroactively reclaim the expired 2022 giveaway.
Black screen, crash, or unstable graphics
Bethesda identifies Vulkan, DirectX 11, and OpenGL 3.2 as relevant rendering paths. Older graphics hardware can have trouble with Vulkan. Use this troubleshooting sequence:

- Update the graphics driver if the GPU and operating system support a current driver.
- Use the Epic Games Launcher’s installation verification or repair option.
- Try another graphics API.
- If necessary, apply the configuration-file workaround below.
- If the change makes the problem worse, restore your backup or undo the edit.
- Confirm that the computer meets the official minimum requirements.
Switching away from Vulkan
Close the game before editing its configuration:
- Open
C:Users[username]Saved GamesNightdive StudiosDOOM 64. - Make a backup copy of
kexengine.cfg. - Open the original file in Notepad.
- Find this line:
seta r_rhirenderfamily "vulkan" - Replace
vulkanwithd3d11oropengl, so the line becomes either:seta r_rhirenderfamily "d3d11"
orseta r_rhirenderfamily "opengl" - Save the file and relaunch DOOM 64.

It remains a straightforward choice for players who want a compact, single-player retro shooter with modern PC conveniences and the extra Lost Levels. Its official hardware requirements are low, and it does not depend on online multiplayer.
It is less suitable if you specifically want the original Nintendo 64 hardware experience, dislike launcher-bound PC purchases, or are looking for a modern open-world or live-service game. Compare the current Epic price, refund terms, cloud-save behavior, and your existing game libraries before buying. Do not purchase new hardware solely for this game unless your current PC fails the published requirements.

Frequently asked questions
Is DOOM 64 the original Nintendo 64 game?
It is the enhanced 2020 release based on the distinct 1997 DOOM 64 entry. It preserves the campaign while adding modern display, input, performance, and extra-level features.
Can I play the Epic copy without the Epic Games Launcher?
The documented Epic download and launch process uses the Epic Games Launcher. Do not assume that an Epic purchase is DRM-free or can be downloaded independently of Epic unless Epic’s current policy explicitly says so.
Can an Epic copy transfer to another PC storefront or console?
There is no basis for assuming cross-buy or cross-platform entitlement. Treat it as a Windows PC purchase tied to Epic.

It may start on some unsupported systems, but Bethesda explicitly does not support hardware below the published minimum. Problems such as crashes, missing rendering features, or poor performance may not have a supported fix.
