How to Connect Headphones to the PS3

The PS3 has no headphone jack on its controller, but you can use headphones through the TV, Bluetooth, a PS3-compatible USB wireless adapter, optical audio, or the AV MULTI OUT connector.

The PS3 has no standard headphone jack on its controller. For full game audio, the most reliable choices are connecting headphones to your TV, using a PS3-compatible USB wireless headset, or attaching an optical transmitter or DAC to the console. A compatible Bluetooth headset can be paired directly with the PS3, but direct Bluetooth support is often better suited to voice chat than full game audio.

Choose the right connection

Headphones or goal Best connection Important limitation
Wired 3.5 mm headphones TV headphone jack, AV receiver, or AV MULTI OUT adapter The PS3 and its controller do not provide a normal 3.5 mm headphone socket.
Bluetooth headset Pair through the PS3 Bluetooth settings It may provide chat audio or microphone support without full game audio.
USB wireless headset Use its PS3-compatible wireless USB adapter A charging cable or generic USB headset is not automatically compatible.
Optical wireless headphones or DAC PS3 DIGITAL OUT (OPTICAL) You need a transmitter, DAC, receiver, or amplifier between the console and headphones.
Modern Bluetooth earbuds TV headphone output or an optical Bluetooth transmitter Phone pairing does not prove PS3 compatibility.

The PS3’s official audio paths are HDMI, optical digital, and the analog AV MULTI OUT connector. Menu names can vary slightly by system software version, region, and language.

The easiest method: connect headphones to the TV

PS3 → HDMI → TV → TV headphone jack → headphones

This is usually the best option for full game, menu, music, and video audio when the TV has a headphone output.

  1. Connect the PS3 to the TV with HDMI.
  2. Plug the headphones into the TV’s headphone jack.
  3. If necessary, open the TV’s sound settings and select its headphone output.
  4. Adjust volume using the TV or the headphone controls.

The PS3 sends audio to the TV over HDMI, and the TV supplies the headphone output. This avoids the PS3’s older Bluetooth compatibility limitations.

If the TV has an audio-in jack rather than a headphone or audio-out jack, it will not work. Some TVs also disable their headphone output depending on the selected sound mode. Test the headphones with another device and check the TV’s audio menu if they remain silent.

Pair a Bluetooth headset with the PS3

Use this method for a compatible Bluetooth headset, particularly when your priority is voice chat. Pairing does not guarantee that stereo game audio will be available.

  1. Put the headset into its actual pairing or discovery mode.
  2. On the PS3, open Settings > Accessory Settings > Manage Bluetooth Devices.
  3. Select Register New Device, then Start Scanning.
  4. Select the headset when it appears.
  5. Enter its passkey if the PS3 requests one. Some devices do not require a passkey.
  6. Open Settings > Accessory Settings > Audio Device Settings.
  7. Set Input Device to the headset if you want to use its microphone.
  8. Set Output Device to the headset if it appears as an available output.

The PS3’s Audio Device Settings screen lets you test the microphone level and choose input and output devices. If a registered headset is disconnected, highlight it, press the controller’s Triangle button, and choose Connect.

Ordinary Bluetooth headphones may pair successfully but still provide no game sound, chat-only sound, low-quality telephone-mode audio, or no usable output. The PS3’s Bluetooth implementation is older, and actual behavior depends on the headset’s supported profiles. For dependable full game audio, use the TV, optical, analog, or compatible USB methods below.

Use a PS3-compatible USB wireless headset

A USB wireless headset with a dedicated transmitter is different from a Bluetooth headset and different from a headset whose USB cable is used only for charging.

  1. Insert the headset’s wireless adapter into a powered PS3 USB port.
  2. Turn on the headset.
  3. Wait for the adapter and headset to pair.
  4. Open the headset’s PS3 settings or configuration screen if the model requires one.
  5. Choose whether it should receive all audio or chat audio only.

Sony’s documented CECHYA-0086 Wireless Stereo Headset requires a PS3 running system software 4.20 or later and its supplied wireless USB adapter. Its Stereo Headset Audio Extension setting works as follows:

Setting Audio sent to the headset
On All audio; VSS and mixer controls are enabled.
Off Chat audio only; VSS and mixer controls are disabled.

This manual documents an older accessory and should not be treated as proof that current PlayStation Link, PULSE Elite, or PULSE Explore products work with a PS3. Check the specific model’s PS3 compatibility before buying.

Connect optical headphones, a transmitter, or a DAC

The PS3’s optical port is an audio output, not a headphone socket. Use it with a wireless-headset base station, optical Bluetooth transmitter, DAC, AV receiver, or headphone amplifier.

PS3 DIGITAL OUT (OPTICAL) → transmitter or DAC → headphones
  1. Connect a TOSLINK optical cable from the PS3’s DIGITAL OUT (OPTICAL) port to the transmitter, DAC, or receiver.
  2. On the PS3, open Settings > Sound Settings > Audio Output Settings.
  3. Select Optical Digital.
  4. Select only the audio formats supported by the connected device.
  5. Save the settings.
  6. Set the transmitter or DAC to its optical input.

The PS3 can output supported two-channel and 5.1-channel formats through optical, but the connected transmitter or headphone system may reduce them to stereo. An optical Bluetooth transmitter normally provides game audio but usually does not return microphone support to the PS3. Wireless delay also varies by transmitter and headphones.

Changing the PS3’s selected audio output can stop sound from reaching the TV. If you need sound through HDMI, optical, and AV MULTI OUT simultaneously, investigate Audio Multi-Output under the sound settings. Sony documents restrictions: nonselected outputs may be downmixed to two channels, and some audio formats are limited.

Use wired headphones with the AV MULTI OUT connector

The PS3’s AV MULTI OUT connector can provide two-channel analog audio through a compatible PS3 AV cable or breakout adapter.

PS3 AV MULTI OUT → red/white RCA audio → RCA-to-3.5 mm adapter → headphones

The RCA connection can feed a headphone amplifier, powered speakers with a headphone jack, or an analog wireless-headphone transmitter. Use an adapter specifically wired for the PS3 AV MULTI OUT connector; a random proprietary-looking cable should not be assumed to fit or carry the correct signals.

This is a stereo, two-channel route. It is useful when the TV has no headphone jack and you want a simple wired solution without relying on Bluetooth.

Game audio, chat audio, and microphone input are different

Audio type What it means
Game audio Game sound effects, menus, music, videos, and other PS3 content.
Chat audio Voice communication from other players.
Microphone input Your voice sent to other players.

A Bluetooth headset can be selected as the microphone and chat device while game audio continues through the TV. A PS3-compatible stereo wireless headset, TV headphone output, optical transmitter, or AV adapter is more appropriate when you want all game sound in headphones. The exact result depends on the device and its PS3 settings.

Test the microphone and fix echo

Open Settings > Accessory Settings > Audio Device Settings. Confirm the correct Input Device and Output Device, then speak and check whether the microphone-level meter responds.

For echo or feedback:

  2. Press Triangle.
  3. Select Settings.

Troubleshooting

Bluetooth headset cannot be found

  1. Turn off nearby Bluetooth devices temporarily.
  2. Put the headset into pairing mode, not merely normal power-on mode.
  3. Delete an old registered device if the PS3 has reached its device limit.
  4. Run Register New Device > Start Scanning again.
  5. Check the headset manual for its passkey.

Bluetooth pairing succeeds but there is no game audio

Open Audio Device Settings and set the headset as Output Device if it is available. Reconnect it with Triangle > Connect. If it still provides only chat or no sound, use the TV headphone jack, optical transmitter, AV MULTI OUT adapter, or PS3-compatible USB wireless headset.

The microphone works but game audio remains on the TV

This is normal for some Bluetooth chat headsets. Successful pairing only proves that the PS3 can communicate with the device; it does not prove that the headset supports full game-audio output.

There is no sound after switching to optical

  1. Check both ends of the optical cable.
  2. Select the correct input on the DAC or headset base station.
  3. Return to Audio Output Settings.
  4. Select only formats supported by the connected device.
  5. If the device accepts only two-channel PCM, do not select unsupported Dolby or DTS formats.
  6. Use Audio Multi-Output only if you also need audio through another output.

The TV has sound but the headphones are silent

Confirm that the headphones are connected to a headphone or audio-out jack, not an audio-in jack. Check the TV’s headphone-output setting and whether the TV passes HDMI audio to that jack. If necessary, use the PS3’s optical or AV MULTI OUT connection instead.

Can you use headphones and TV speakers together?

Sometimes. The TV may disable its speakers when headphones are connected, and the PS3’s Audio Multi-Output feature has downmixing and format restrictions. If simultaneous sound is essential, configure Audio Multi-Output or use separate PS3 outputs, then select formats supported by every connected device.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I plug headphones into a PS3 controller?

Not normally. Unlike later PlayStation controllers, the standard PS3 controller does not have a built-in 3.5 mm headphone jack. Use the TV, optical, AV MULTI OUT, Bluetooth, or a compatible USB wireless connection instead.

Can AirPods connect directly to a PS3?

They may not provide reliable full audio through direct PS3 Bluetooth pairing. A TV headphone output or optical Bluetooth transmitter is usually the more dependable workaround.

Can any USB headset work on PS3?

No. Compatibility is device-specific. A dedicated wireless headset adapter must be designed for PS3, and a USB charging cable does not make a headset a USB audio device.

What is the cheapest reliable setup?

If your TV has a headphone jack, connect the PS3 to the TV with HDMI and plug the headphones into the TV. Otherwise, a compatible AV MULTI OUT RCA-to-3.5 mm adapter is a simple stereo option.
