The Super Shotgun, Rocket Launcher, and Cycler are the strongest all-around picks for different jobs: close-range burst, explosive armor pressure, and sustained ranged energy damage. The Impaler can be exceptional against bosses when you land precise shots, while the Combat Shotgun and Flail offer dependable utility. No weapon wins every encounter; range, ammunition, upgrades, and execution matter.
This ranking focuses on the 15-weapon main-campaign roster. Revelations DLC weapons are covered separately so their different scope is clear. The recommendations below synthesize published guide and review judgments, not controlled damage testing.

How this ranking works
Weapons are ranked by intended-range damage, reliability, ammunition demands, upgrade value, and encounter role—not by a universal DPS score. The available guides do not provide standardized comparative tests, so placements are practical editorial recommendations rather than measured outcomes. DBLTAP likewise notes that no weapon is outright bad, even though its tier list reflects the writer’s preferences.
The strongest choices share a clear role: the Super Shotgun for a close-range opening, the Rocket Launcher for explosive pressure, and the Cycler for keeping damage on targets at longer sightlines. The Impaler can rival them in the right hands, but its slow projectile and limited ammunition make it less forgiving.

Best main-campaign weapons, ranked by role
1. Super Shotgun — best close-range burst
When you can get within its intended range, the Super Shotgun is the clearest choice for heavy burst damage. PC Gamer describes it as dealing the game’s highest damage at that range and says one shot can kill several dangerous demons. DBLTAP also places it in S tier.
- Best for: dangerous enemies you can approach safely and short windows for concentrated damage.
- Trade-off: ammunition is limited, and each shot uses two ammo units, according to PC Gamer. Don’t spend it casually on targets the starting Combat Shotgun can finish.
- Upgrade angle: Speed Loader addresses reload speed; Eat This! improves the weapon’s pellets.
2. Rocket Launcher — best explosive pressure and armor damage
The Rocket Launcher combines high damage with effective armor pressure. PC Gamer notes that a hit to a Hell tank’s main cannon can destroy it, making the launcher a strong choice when a heavily armored target presents a clear shot. DBLTAP also ranks it in S tier.
- Best for: armored targets and situations where explosive damage can reach a priority enemy.
- Upgrade synergy: PC Gamer describes Cannibalism and Cooked upgrades that interact with a Hell Surge parry: one can turn explosion self-damage into healing, while the other empowers rockets. These benefits depend on the parry and the relevant upgrades; they are not automatic healing or a general damage bonus.
3. Cycler — best sustained ranged energy damage
Choose the Cycler when closing distance is undesirable or you need to keep energy damage on a target across a longer sightline. PC Gamer favors it over the Shredder for its greater range, somewhat higher damage, and ability to break energy shields. DBLTAP puts it in S tier.

- Experience the origin story of the DOOM Slayer’s rage in this epic, cinematic, and action-packed story.
- Best for: ranged fights, shield-breaking, and sustained energy damage.
- Upgrade synergy: Amplify boosts damage after you apply shock, according to PC Gamer.
4. Impaler — best precision-dependent specialist
The Impaler rewards accurate headshots and can be a powerful boss weapon. PC Gamer calls it probably the best weapon for bosses if you land headshots; DBLTAP is more cautious, placing it in A tier and arguing that the Rocket Launcher and Super Shotgun outclass it. That difference reflects the key trade-off: its damage potential is high, but landing it reliably takes more work.
- Best for: precise shots on a predictable or exposed target, including bosses.
- Execution cost: its physical projectile travels slowly and arcs low, so lead moving targets. Ammunition is constrained early, making missed shots costly.
- Upgrade synergy: PC Gamer describes upgrades that refund ammunition through Shield Saw actions or parrying a green Hell Surge, followed by an empowered shot.
5. Combat Shotgun — best reliable utility
The Combat Shotgun is available from the start and remains useful against fodder across the campaign. It is the practical choice for finishing weaker enemies while conserving Super Shotgun ammunition. PC Gamer’s guide describes it as a weapon that serves from the first level through the final boss; DBLTAP places it in A tier for reliability.
Its Incendiary Shrine upgrade burns enemies, and PC Gamer reports that killing a fodder demon can generate three armor shards. That makes the shotgun useful not just for damage, but also for supporting armor supply when the upgrade is available.

- Brand Name:Xbox
- Video game region: region free
- Display Platform: PS5
6. Flail — best melee utility
Of the three melee choices, PC Gamer prefers the Flail for area damage, a short cooldown, and an upgrade that makes enemies drop armor shards. Use it for nearby groups and armor utility rather than treating it as a replacement for ranged boss damage.
What the tier lists agree—and disagree—on
DBLTAP’s May 12, 2025 tier list puts the Cycler, Rocket Launcher, and Super Shotgun in S tier. Its A tier includes the Combat Shotgun, Impaler, Grenade Launcher, and Ravager. Those placements are one outlet’s editorial judgments, not a shared or statistically validated scale.
The Impaler is the clearest point of disagreement: PC Gamer emphasizes its boss potential with successful headshots, while DBLTAP ranks it below the top three and considers it a backup. Chainshot also illustrates how preferences matter: DBLTAP places it in B tier, citing its slow charge-and-fire cycle and the author’s reaction to its feel despite its damage. The difference is a useful reminder to match a weapon to your aim, timing, and encounter rather than following a tier label blindly.

Which weapons should you upgrade first?
Prioritize upgrades that reinforce the role you actually use. The sources describe several upgrades with concrete combat or resource benefits:
- Combat Shotgun — Incendiary: burns enemies and can produce armor shards when a fodder demon dies, according to PC Gamer.
- Cycler — Amplify: increases damage after you apply shock.
- Rocket Launcher — Cannibalism and Cooked: add conditional healing and rocket empowerment after a Hell Surge parry.
- Impaler: look for the described ammunition-refund and empowered-shot interactions if you can reliably parry or use Shield Saw actions.
- Super Shotgun: Speed Loader and Eat This! address reload speed and pellets, respectively.
- Flail: its armor-shard upgrade adds resource utility to melee attacks.
These are not interchangeable bonuses: the Rocket Launcher and Impaler interactions depend on defensive actions, while the Cycler’s damage increase depends on applying shock. If you rarely trigger a condition, an upgrade built around it may contribute less to your play than a straightforward weapon improvement.

Revelations DLC: keep its weapons in a separate category
The Revelations expansion adds a Chain Spear, and GamesRadar+’s July 17, 2026 review describes the Shield Saw returning later in the expansion as a weapon you can switch to. The reviewer found the spear riskier but powerful when mastered, while calling the shield “a safer, steadier bet.” These are review observations about DLC gameplay, not a measured ranking against the base-campaign weapons.
Bethesda’s official DOOM: The Dark Ages page links to Revelations and Update 4 materials dated July 2026. The ranking sources cited here were published in May 2025, so they do not establish how a later balance patch may affect base-game weapon comparisons.
