SteamDB records a peak of 31,470 players for The Dark Ages, compared with 44,271 for DOOM (2016) and 104,891 for DOOM Eternal. Those figures compare Steam activity only; they do not measure total players, sales, or the games’ performance across every platform.
Steam peak player counts compared
The figures below are SteamDB’s all-time concurrent-player peaks. A peak is the largest number of people playing a game on Steam at the same time, not the number of unique players who have tried it.

What “lowest player count” means here
The headline is accurate only when “player count” means the all-time Steam concurrent-player peak, comparing these three modern installments. It does not mean that only 31,470 people ever played The Dark Ages: the figure counts simultaneous Steam players at one moment. Nor does it count copies sold or establish which game had the largest total audience.
#1 Best Overall
- Developed by id Software, DOOM: The Dark Ages is the prequel to the critically acclaimed DOOM (2016) and DOOM Eternal that tells the epic cinematic origin story of the DOOM Slayer’s rage.

With a customizable difficulty system, it’s the perfect entry point whether you’re new to the franchise or a long time fan.
- As the super weapon of gods and kings, shred enemies with devastating favorites like the Super Shotgun while also wielding a variety of new bone-chewing weapons, including the versatile Shield Saw.
- Experience the origin story of the DOOM Slayer’s rage in this epic, cinematic, and action-packed story.
SteamDB also displays live player counts and 24-hour peaks, which change over time. Those are different measures from the all-time records above, so they should not be mixed in a comparison. The peak dates matter too: each game set its record in a different release period.
Why Steam’s numbers do not tell the whole story
The Dark Ages launched on Steam, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox PC and PlayStation 5, and Xbox announced day-one Game Pass availability. Steam charts cover concurrent players on Steam, not people playing on consoles or through another platform’s subscription access. The available figures do not provide comparable all-platform player totals, so they cannot show how many people played across every route.

The Steam listing describes The Dark Ages as a single-player game, the third installment in the modern DOOM series and a prequel to DOOM (2016) and DOOM Eternal. It names id Software as developer, Bethesda Softworks as publisher, and 14 May 2025 as the Steam release date. The peak reported for 17 May is therefore a historical Steam concurrency record shortly after that listed release—not a measure of the game’s entire audience.
Do the PC requirements explain the lower peak?
Bethesda’s listed minimum PC specification targets 1080p at 60 FPS on low settings and requires a ray-tracing-capable graphics card with at least 8 GB of dedicated VRAM, 16 GB of RAM and 100 GB of free space on an NVMe SSD. The recommended specification lists 10 GB of VRAM and 32 GB of RAM.
Rank #3
- Brand Name:Xbox
- Video game region: region free
- Display Platform: PS5
Those requirements are relevant context for PC players, but the available evidence does not establish that they caused The Dark Ages to have a lower Steam peak than the earlier games. The peak comparison shows a difference in Steam concurrency; it does not identify a reason for it.

What the comparison can—and cannot—show
- It can show: The Dark Ages had the smallest all-time Steam concurrent-player peak among these three games, according to SteamDB’s recorded figures.
- It cannot show: which game sold the most copies, reached the most players across all platforms, or performed best commercially.
- It cannot explain: why the peaks differ. The figures alone do not establish a cause.
