What the Developer_Direct video covers
id Software’s gameplay deep dive was part of Xbox Developer_Direct on January 23, 2025. Xbox Wire organized its recap around three subjects—combat, exploration, and story—rather than presenting the video as a release-date announcement alone. Xbox Wire’s Developer_Direct recap describes the game as a prequel to DOOM (2016) and DOOM Eternal.

How combat differs from the recent DOOM games
The reveal framed the combat as heavier and more grounded than DOOM Eternal. Game Director Hugo Martin contrasted the earlier game’s “fighter jet” feel with The Dark Ages as an “iron tank”: the emphasis is on standing, facing threats, and using defensive tools as well as attacking. These are the developers’ descriptions of the intended feel, not a measured comparison.

The Shield Saw and melee weapons
The Shield Saw is the showcase tool. In the presentation, it blocks attacks, can be thrown offensively, and helps the Slayer move through environments. Martin summarized its defensive options in the Developer_Direct transcript: “Block, Throw, Parry, Deflect – all from one input.” The reveal also discussed a flail, electric gauntlet, and spiked mace alongside firearms. Bethesda’s Slayers Club transcript identifies Martin as Game Director and Marty Stratton as Studio Director at id Software.
What exploration and story add
Less-linear levels
The official recap describes larger, less-linear spaces than the series’ earlier entries, with optional objectives, secrets, loot, and upgrades. The stated goal is to give players more room to explore between fights rather than moving only through a tightly directed sequence.

Atlan mech and cybernetic dragon
The video also showed the Slayer taking control of an Atlan mech and riding a cybernetic dragon. These sequences widen the scale beyond on-foot combat and are among the reveal’s clearest departures in activity and setting.
A more cinematic story
Xbox Wire said the story would use cutscenes and prominent story beats to make the lore more accessible. The game’s prequel position gives that presentation a distinct role: it depicts an earlier conflict in the DOOM universe, rather than continuing the events of DOOM Eternal.
