DOOM: The Dark Ages expansion Revelations launched on July 7, 2026. Game director Hugo Martin called its scale “basically like a sequel,” but that was his subjective description—not a measured comparison with the main game. Bethesda confirms a six-level campaign chapter, new demons and puzzles, a Chain Spear combat system, and additional Ripatorium content.
What did Hugo Martin mean by “basically like a sequel”?
Martin used the phrase while discussing the expansion during a Slayers Club livestream, as reported by GamesRadar+ on February 28, 2026. He said it felt “massive” and “ginormous” to him. Those remarks describe his experience of the content in development; they are not an official size estimate.
Bethesda’s release information confirms six new levels, but the reviewed official details do not quantify total playtime or compare the expansion’s length or overall size with the base game. So “sequel” is best understood as Martin’s enthusiasm about its scale, not a promise that Revelations is a full standalone sequel.
What does Revelations add?
A six-level campaign chapter
Bethesda describes a new campaign chapter in which the Slayer’s story involves a purgatory and a mysterious ally. The chapter includes six levels, deeper puzzles, and new demons. The official launch announcement gives the level count but does not state how many hours the campaign takes to complete.

The Chain Spear and combat options
Revelations introduces the Chain Spear and a combat system Bethesda says rewards mastery with power and mobility. The official release notes also list control customization, a spear empowerment setting, and a configurable perfect-dodge window. These are confirmed additions; no numeric damage or mobility comparison with existing weapons is provided.
More Ripatorium encounters
After completing the base game’s Master Arenas, players with Revelations can access three additional Ripatorium arenas featuring demons from the expansion, a fully upgraded loadout, and new music. id Software also curated six encounter presets. The Ripatorium 3.0 update for the base game is free, but these Revelations additions require the expansion as well as the stated progression.
