The shift broadens the campaign’s shape, but a premise with more narrative space is not automatically a deep story—and the combat’s success depends on how well its new tools keep encounters forceful and readable. This spoiler-conscious overview distinguishes id Software’s stated goals from judgments that require firsthand play.
Is DOOM: The Dark Ages a prequel?
Yes. DOOM: The Dark Ages is a single-player prequel to DOOM (2016) and DOOM Eternal, set in a medieval war against Hell. It follows the beginning of the Slayer’s time with the Sentinels, rather than continuing the later point in his story. Bethesda’s January 23, 2025 interview with game director Hugo Martin describes the Slayer as an outsider and a superweapon in the Sentinels’ conflict.

The setup gives the story a useful dramatic tension: the Slayer is powerful, but he is also a figure operating among people and institutions that do not simply share his perspective. That is a promising foundation for a deeper narrative, not proof that the finished story achieves one. Bethesda and id Software’s official descriptions establish the premise and the developers’ intentions; they cannot establish whether the writing, character work, or pacing feels compelling in play.
Is there more story in this Doom?
Story has a more explicit place in the design. Martin says the game has three engagement pillars—combat, exploration, and story—and argues that a Doom narrative should strengthen the power fantasy and give players more motivation to fight through the campaign. That is a clear statement of intent, not an independent verdict on the story’s quality.

The important distinction is between more room for story and a deeper story. A prequel can add context to the Slayer’s past and his relationship with the Sentinels, while still keeping action at the center. Whether this one’s characters and events develop into something emotionally or thematically substantial is a critical judgment that should rest on actually playing the campaign. Without firsthand assessment, it would be misleading to call the story definitively deep—or to dismiss it as an afterthought.
How is the combat different from DOOM Eternal?
The change is a new medieval toolkit built around the Shield-Saw, alongside new weapons. Martin describes the design target as the depth of Eternal’s combat loop with the simpler control scheme of DOOM (2016). That is the developer’s aim; it does not by itself prove the game reaches that balance.
The Shield-Saw is a contextual tool
Its uses depend on what the player is targeting: Martin says a throw can ricochet off plasma shields, lodge in flesh to stun larger demons, or break armor and trigger an area blast. This makes the shield more than a defensive prop in the stated design. The player is meant to read an enemy or obstacle and choose a useful response, rather than treat every encounter as a simple damage race.

The trade-off: fewer controls, meaningful decisions
A simpler control scheme can make a combat system easier to enter, while depth depends on whether the weapons and contextual actions create worthwhile choices. The stated goal is not to reproduce Eternal unchanged: it is to preserve a layered combat loop while giving it a different rhythm and medieval identity. Assessing whether that actually feels satisfying requires firsthand play; official descriptions explain the mechanics and intent, not their moment-to-moment execution.

What editions are available, and what is in the Collector’s Bundle?
Bethesda’s edition comparison describes the base game as available physically or digitally and included with Xbox Game Pass. Exact availability can vary by retailer and region.
| Edition | What Bethesda lists |
|---|---|
| Base game | The game, offered in physical or digital form; also included with Xbox Game Pass according to Bethesda’s edition page. |
| Premium Edition | Base game, campaign DLC, digital artbook and soundtrack, and skins. Up to two days’ early access was a launch-period benefit, not a continuing feature. |
| Collector’s Bundle | Premium Edition contents plus a 12-inch DOOM Slayer statue with detachable weapons and cape, a metal red key card replica, and a SteelBook case. |
Bethesda’s FAQ says eligible Premium Edition and Collector’s Bundle owners can install the digital artbook and soundtrack separately from their platform library. Check the current regional product listing before buying: stock, bundle contents, and access terms are retailer- and platform-dependent.
Release dates depend on the source
Bethesda announced May 15, 2025 for Xbox Series X|S, Windows PC, and PlayStation 5. The Steam listing displayed May 14, 2025. Those are source- and platform-specific storefront dates, not a reason to infer a different release for every player. Steam has also displayed regional, time-limited offers; a past sale price is not a reliable current price.

Verdict: does the story and action live up to the premise?
DOOM: The Dark Ages has a strong design proposition: a prequel that gives the Slayer’s Sentinel-era setting more narrative space, paired with combat built around a distinctive shield and a deliberately different control philosophy. The official material supports those claims about premise and intent. It does not substantiate a blanket claim that the story is deep or that the action is excellent in execution.
That distinction matters for a review. If you want to know whether the campaign’s story actually earns the word “deep,” or whether its combat is great rather than merely promising on paper, the answer must come from a reviewer’s firsthand account of the finished game. Without that evidence, the fair conclusion is that the game aims to give story a larger role without abandoning combat as its central draw—and that the success of both ambitions remains a matter of play, not marketing copy.
