When a card or other object moves to exile, counters it already had cease to exist; they do not travel with it. But a card in exile can have counters if an effect puts them there—for example, suspend can exile a card with time counters.
What happens to counters when an object is exiled?
Magic: The Gathering’s Comprehensive Rules say in rule 122.2: “Counters on an object are not retained if that object moves from one zone to another. The counters are not ‘removed’; they simply cease to exist.” Exile is a zone, so counters on an object do not remain on it when it moves there.
For example, if a creature with +1/+1 counters is exiled, those counters cease to exist as the creature changes zones. Exiling means putting an object into the exile zone from its current zone, as defined by rule 406.2.
Does the card get those counters back if it leaves exile?
No. Under rule 400.7, an object that moves from one zone to another ordinarily becomes a new object, with no memory of or relation to its previous existence, subject to listed exceptions. If an exiled card later returns to the battlefield, it does not regain counters it had before being exiled.
#1 Best Overall
- Includes a mix of AT LEAST 25 Rares/Uncommons which is half of the cards.
- Absolutely NO... Basic lands, Foreign, or silver/gold bordered cards.
- Some may contain Foils or Mythics but not all.
- Sets can range from Beta to the current Magic the Gathering set.
- Mint/Excellent condition only.
Can a card in exile have counters?
Yes. The distinction is whether counters were already on the object when it changed zones or an effect puts counters on it after it is in exile. Suspend, for example, exiles a card with time counters. Those counters are placed as instructed; they did not survive a move from another zone.
Are there exceptions?
Specific card text and rules can create exceptions to the general zone-change rule. Rule 101.1 gives directly contradictory card text priority over the rules. Do not assume an exile effect carries counters forward unless the relevant card text or rule says so; for a specific interaction, apply that text and its applicable rules.

The official Reality Fracture Update Bulletin, published September 21, 2026, says the official rules take precedence over its summary; its listed changes do not report a change to the general rule about counters changing zones.
