DoomLinux: The Tiny Linux Distribution That Boots Straight Into Classic DOOM

By VGSources Team 7 min read

DoomLinux is a tiny, single-purpose Linux live system that boots directly into classic DOOM. It is not a modern desktop distribution or a practical replacement for a normal DOOM source port. Instead, it is an educational experiment: one Bash script builds a Linux kernel, BusyBox userland, the framebuffer-based fbDOOM engine, game data, and a GRUB-bootable ISO of roughly 18–20 MB.

That makes DoomLinux most interesting as a lesson in how little software is needed to boot Linux and launch one application—not as the easiest way to play DOOM in 2026.

What DoomLinux actually is

DoomLinux is a minimal live Linux build designed to run classic DOOM immediately after boot. Its author describes it as a single script that builds a small Linux operating system from source code and launches DOOM on startup.

Calling it a Linux distribution is technically reasonable, although the description needs context. It includes the major layers expected in a very small distribution:

#1 Best Overall
DOOM Eternal: Standard Edition - PlayStation 4
  • Gain access to the latest demon-killing Tech with the DOOM Slayer's advanced praetor suit, including a shoulder-mounted flamethrower and the retractable wrist-mounted DOOM Blade
  • Upgraded guns and mods, such as the Super shotgun's new distance-closing meat hook attachment, and abilities like the double Dash make you faster, stronger, and more versatile than ever
  • You can't Kill demons when you're Dead, and you can't stay alive without resources. These tools are the key to your survival and becoming the ultimate demon-slayer
  • A new class of (destructible) demon
  • Battle mode is the new 2 versus 1 multiplayer experience built from the ground up at id software
  • A Linux kernel
  • A root filesystem
  • BusyBox utilities and shell
  • An init script
  • GRUB boot files
  • A user-space DOOM executable

What it does not include is equally important: there is no desktop environment, package manager, installer, networking stack, ordinary user-management system, or general-purpose software ecosystem. DoomLinux is better understood as a single-application live system than as a daily-driver operating system.

What is inside the ISO?

The documented build uses Linux kernel 5.4.3, BusyBox 1.35.0, and fbDOOM. BusyBox supplies compact versions of common Unix tools and is statically compiled so the resulting system needs very few external libraries.

The image also contains a compressed kernel and root filesystem, GRUB configuration, an init script, the fbDOOM executable, and a DOOM WAD file. The repository identifies output components including bzImage, rootfs.gz, System.map, and grub.cfg.

The project reports an approximately 17.9 MB ISO on its x86_64 build, with results around 20 MB depending on architecture and build conditions. That is an impressive size, but it comes from deliberately removing capabilities that a normal Linux installation would take for granted.

The boot flow

Firmware → GRUB → Linux kernel → initramfs → /init → fbDOOM
└→ BusyBox shell if DOOM exits

The sequence is straightforward:

  1. Firmware loads GRUB from the ISO or USB device.
  2. GRUB loads the Linux kernel and compressed root filesystem.
  3. Linux starts the project’s /init script.
  4. The script mounts virtual filesystems such as /dev, /proc, and /sys.
  5. It launches fbdoom -iwad /bin/doom1.wad.
  6. If the game exits, the script starts a BusyBox shell through cttyhack.

This is the part that makes DoomLinux more than “DOOM running on Linux.” The project demonstrates the complete path from bootloader to kernel, root filesystem, init process, and application.

Why fbDOOM matters

fbDOOM is adapted to draw through Linux framebuffer devices rather than requiring a conventional desktop graphics session such as X11 or Wayland. That lets the game run without a desktop environment or graphical login system.

The trade-off is compatibility and convenience. Framebuffer output is a low-level approach, and fbDOOM is not equivalent to modern ports such as GZDoom, Chocolate Doom, DSDA-Doom, or Crispy Doom. Do not expect modern rendering options, widescreen features, controller integration, mod-management facilities, or the broad hardware support of a current desktop port.

How to build DoomLinux

The project is built from source rather than installed as a conventional prebuilt operating system. Its documented host dependencies use Debian- or Ubuntu-style package names:

sudo apt install wget make gawk gcc bc bison flex unzip rsync mtools xorriso libelf-dev libssl-dev grub-common

This command is written for an APT-based Linux host. Fedora, Arch, openSUSE, and other systems use different package names and may separate GRUB or development components differently. The build also needs a Linux development environment, compiler tools, disk space for source downloads and compilation, and access to the project’s external download URLs.

From the cloned or downloaded repository directory, run:

./DoomLinux.sh

The expected output is:

DoomLinux.iso

The script builds the pinned kernel and BusyBox versions, compiles fbDOOM, creates the root filesystem, writes the init and GRUB configuration, and packages everything into an ISO.

Because the project depends on older source versions and external archives, a build that worked when the script was published is not guaranteed to remain reproducible on every current Linux host. Compiler behavior, download locations, moving repository branches, and host-tool changes can all affect the result.

Try it safely in QEMU first

The safest way to test the image is in an emulator rather than by writing it to physical media:

qemu-system-x86_64 DoomLinux.iso

QEMU avoids changing a real computer’s boot disk and is especially useful for understanding the documented x86_64 workflow. With a successful boot, DoomLinux should move from the bootloader into Linux and then launch DOOM. Exiting the game should leave you at a BusyBox shell instead of powering off the machine.

QEMU is not proof that the image will work on every physical computer. The project enables a Bochs display interface for QEMU, while real hardware may expose different graphics, input, and firmware behavior.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Booting from a USB drive

The project documentation describes writing the ISO to a USB stick and selecting it from the computer’s BIOS boot menu. Test in QEMU first, and treat physical booting as experimental.

Do not copy the ISO onto a disk as an ordinary file and do not use a disk-writing tool until you have identified the correct removable device. Selecting the wrong device can erase an entire internal drive. Back up important data before experimenting.

Modern firmware is a major caveat. The documented kernel configuration disables EFI support and EFI stubs, so legacy BIOS or compatibility-mode boot is more plausible than booting on a UEFI-only computer. Secure Boot may also reject the image. Even if a machine can boot legacy media, its graphics hardware may not provide a framebuffer configuration that works with fbDOOM.

The compromises behind the tiny image

DoomLinux is small because the build intentionally removes most features unrelated to launching the game. The documented configuration:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Disables sound support.
  • Disables networking.
  • Disables EFI support and EFI stubs.
  • Optimizes the kernel for size.
  • Enables a display interface useful for QEMU.
  • Sets the hostname to DoomLinux.

As a result, the stock build should not be treated as a feature-rich gaming system. Sound is not expected, online multiplayer is not part of the design, and there is no normal update path or package-management workflow.

DOOM data is separate from the engine

The game executable and the game data are different things. The engine supplies the program that interprets and renders the game, while the WAD contains levels, graphics, sounds, and other content.

The documented build downloads the shareware doom1.wad. The fbDOOM documentation also explains that users need legitimate DOOM data. A source-available engine does not automatically make every commercial WAD freely redistributable.

Use game data you are legally entitled to use, and verify the terms that apply to the specific WAD and the way it is distributed. The DoomLinux project is MIT-licensed, but that project license does not determine the licensing status of every DOOM asset.

Common problems and recovery steps

The dependency command fails

The listed command targets Debian and Ubuntu. On another distribution, map the required tools to its package manager. Confirm that gcc, make, bc, bison, flex, xorriso, GRUB tooling, and the required development libraries are present. If the host is difficult to reconcile, a disposable Debian or Ubuntu virtual machine may be simpler than modifying the host system.

A source or WAD download fails

The script retrieves source archives and game data from external locations. URLs can move, reject a protocol, change branches, or disappear. Inspect the script’s download URLs, prefer HTTPS where the source offers it, and pin a known fbDOOM revision if reproducibility matters. Verify checksums before using replacement downloads, and do not silently substitute an unverified WAD.

The ISO works in QEMU but not on real hardware

Possible causes include UEFI-only firmware, Secure Boot, unsupported graphics hardware, a failed USB write, or differences between QEMU’s emulated display and the physical machine.

If the firmware offers legacy or CSM boot, it may be worth trying. Disable Secure Boot only if you understand the security implications. Otherwise, use QEMU or another compatible machine. Never erase the internal disk while troubleshooting.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

There is no sound

This is expected from the stock documented build because sound support is disabled in the kernel configuration. Adding sound would require enabling the appropriate kernel subsystem and hardware driver, adapting or verifying fbDOOM’s sound path, and rebuilding for the target hardware.

DOOM exits to a shell

That behavior is intentional. The init script launches fbDOOM and then starts BusyBox through cttyhack, giving you a shell after the game exits.

The game says the WAD is missing

Check that /bin/doom1.wad exists inside the root filesystem and that the init command points to that exact path. The engine cannot run the intended game without compatible data.

Should you use DoomLinux today?

Use it if your goal is to study minimal Linux systems, explore boot processes, or enjoy a retro-computing novelty. It is a compact example of compiling a kernel, creating a BusyBox root filesystem, writing an init script, adding one application, and packaging the result with GRUB.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

It is a poor choice if your goal is simply to play DOOM. A normal Linux installation with a maintained source port is more practical for sound, saves, mods, multiplayer, controllers, modern displays, and easier updates. DoomLinux’s value is educational: it makes the layers of a Linux system visible by stripping away everything that is not needed for one workload.

The project also describes itself as a learning exercise and disclaims responsibility for damage. Treat the ISO accordingly: experiment in QEMU first, keep valuable data away from test media, and do not assume that an approximately 18 MB image has the compatibility or security expectations of a maintained operating system.
