“The program can’t start because engine2.dll is missing”

Which fix applies to you
Use the matching path below:
- ABBYY FineReader, FineReader for ScanSnap, FineReader Sprint, or FotoReader: repair or reinstall that exact ABBYY product.
- Counter-Strike 2, Dota 2, Half-Life: Alyx, or another Source 2 game: verify the game files through its launcher.
- The file exists, but Windows says “The specified module could not be found”: a dependency may be missing. Repair the application and its Visual C++ runtime.
- The error includes
0xc000007bor “not designed to run on Windows”: check 32-bit and 64-bit compatibility and reinstall the correct application prerequisites. - The file disappeared after security software ran: inspect Windows Security Protection history before restoring anything.
- Several unrelated applications fail with DLL errors: repair Windows components with DISM and SFC.
- Only one Windows account is affected: test the application under a new user profile before reinstalling Windows or making invasive changes.
Do not copy an ABBYY engine2.dll into a Source 2 game folder, or a game copy into FineReader. Different applications can use the same filename while requiring completely different files.

What engine2.dll is
engine2.dll is an application DLL, not a normal Windows system component. The legacy file is associated with ABBYY FineReader and is commonly described as a Resource DLL published by ABBYY or ABBYY (BIT Software). FineReader installations normally keep their engine and resource modules beside the application’s executable.
A different engine2.dll belongs to Valve’s Source 2 engine. In that case, the file is part of the installed game and should be restored through the game launcher.

It should not normally be placed in:
C:WindowsSystem32
C:WindowsSysWOW64
Public file listings contain inconsistent version, size and architecture information for the older ABBYY file. Treat those listings as identification clues, not as a source for replacement files. The correct copy is the one supplied by the exact application build.
Windows can also report that a module is missing when the named DLL is present. The loader may be unable to find a dependency required by engine2.dll, such as a runtime library. Presence alone does not prove that the file is correct or loadable.
Fix 1: Repair or reinstall FineReader
This is the most likely fix when the error appears while opening FineReader or another ABBYY application.

- Close FineReader and any ABBYY processes.
- Press Windows + I to open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Choose Installed apps on Windows 11, or Apps & features on Windows 10.
- Search for FineReader, FineReader for ScanSnap, FineReader Sprint, FotoReader, or the exact ABBYY product name.
- Select the three-dot menu beside the program.
- Choose Advanced options if available.
- Select Repair and follow the prompts.
If there is no Repair button:
- Open Control Panel.
- Select Programs > Programs and Features.
- Select the ABBYY product.
- Choose Change, Repair, or Modify, depending on what the installer provides.
- Complete the repair and restart Windows.
Try FineReader again. If it opens without the error, the missing or damaged application file has been restored.
Reinstall the exact FineReader edition
If repair fails, reinstall the same product and edition that originally owned the file.
- Save any custom FineReader settings or activation information you need.
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Select the ABBYY application and choose Uninstall.
- Restart Windows after the uninstall completes.
- Download the installer from ABBYY or from the hardware manufacturer that supplied the bundled FineReader edition.
- Install the same edition and architecture required by the original application.
- Restart Windows again.
- Launch FineReader and test scanning or document recognition.
Do not substitute a DLL from another FineReader release. Older FineReader products may use different files, dependencies and installation layouts. A newer ABBYY product is not automatically a compatible replacement for a legacy edition.
If the installer offers Repair, use that before removing the application. If reinstalling restores engine2.dll but the file disappears again, check antivirus quarantine before reinstalling repeatedly.

Use this fix when the error appears in Counter-Strike 2, Dota 2, Half-Life: Alyx, or another Source 2 game.
For a Steam installation:
- Open Steam.
- Select Library.
- Right-click the affected game.
- Select Properties.
- Select Installed Files.
- Choose Verify integrity of game files.
- Wait for Steam to finish downloading or replacing damaged files.
- Restart Steam and launch the game.
The game may report that files were reacquired or replaced. Test the game after verification.

For another launcher, open the game’s settings or management menu and use its Repair, Verify, Scan and repair, or equivalent option. Do not copy an ABBYY file into the game directory.
If verification fails repeatedly:
- Exit the launcher completely.
- Restart Windows.
- Clear the launcher’s download cache if it provides that function.
- Sign in again.
- Run file verification a second time.
- Reinstall the game only if repair and verification continue to fail.
A Source 2 message may say that it is unable to load module engine2, sometimes with error 0x0000045a. That is a game-file or dependency-loading problem, not evidence that FineReader is installed incorrectly.

A message such as “The specified module could not be found” does not always mean that engine2.dll itself is absent. Windows may have found the file but failed to load one of its required libraries.
First, repair or reinstall the owning application. Then check the Microsoft Visual C++ runtime.
Install the correct Visual C++ Redistributable
Microsoft provides separate installers for x86, x64 and ARM64 systems through its supported Visual C++ Redistributable downloads.
Choose the architecture that matches the application:

- Use x86 for a 32-bit FineReader or game, even on 64-bit Windows.
- Use x64 for a 64-bit application.
- Use ARM64 only when the application is running on Windows for ARM and requires it.
You can install both x86 and x64 packages when you use applications of both architectures.
To repair an existing runtime:
- Press Windows + I.
- Select Apps > Installed apps.
- Search for Microsoft Visual C++.
- Select the relevant x86 or x64 entry.
- Choose Modify.
- Select Repair.
- Restart Windows and test the application.
If the runtime is not installed, download it only from Microsoft’s Visual C++ Redistributable page, install the matching package, restart, and test again.
engine2.dll is not itself a Visual C++ runtime DLL. Installing the runtime can help only when a missing or damaged dependency is preventing the application DLL from loading.

Check the application architecture
A 32-bit DLL cannot replace a 64-bit DLL, and the reverse is also true. To check the program’s architecture, look at the application’s documentation or installation folder, or ask the software vendor for the requirement. Do not infer compatibility from the fact that Windows itself is 64-bit.
If the error began after replacing an old application with a newer installer, remove unofficial DLL copies and reinstall the exact build intended for that application.
Fix 4: Check Windows Security quarantine
Windows Security may have quarantined the file after an update, cleanup operation or malware detection.
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent detections.
- Open a detection related to the FineReader or game installation.
- Confirm the original path, detection name and application source.
Restore or allow the file only when all of the following are true:
- The file came from the legitimate application installer.
- The path is the expected application directory.
- The application was obtained from its vendor or an authorized source.
- A current security scan does not identify the file as malicious.
If the detection is unclear, do not restore it. Remove the application, scan Windows, and reinstall from the official vendor. If the file is repeatedly quarantined after reinstalling, investigate the detection instead of downloading another copy.

Fix 5: Run DISM and System File Checker
Use these commands when multiple applications show loader errors, Windows itself behaves abnormally, or the problem began after system corruption. They are not normally a way to recreate a third-party ABBYY or game DLL.
- Open the Start menu.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Run this command first:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for DISM to complete.
- Run:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows.
- Repair or verify the affected application again.
DISM repairs the Windows component store. SFC checks protected Windows system files. Neither command should be expected to download engine2.dll for FineReader or a game.
Repeating SFC and DISM without knowing what changed can be time-consuming. Fix 6: Update drivers only when the symptoms point to drivers
A graphics or device-driver update is more relevant when the game crashes after starting, rendering fails, or Device Manager reports a device problem. A driver update normally does not restore an application-local engine2.dll.
Check Device Manager as follows:
- Right-click the Start button.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters and any category related to the failing device.
- Right-click the device.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Driver tab.
- Check the provider, date and version.
- Select Update Driver if an update is available.
- Restart Windows and test the application.
For graphics drivers, use the official support page for the graphics manufacturer when Windows Update does not provide a suitable release. Do not install a random driver package offered by a DLL download site.

Manually checking each device and matching versions can be tedious. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers and show the available updates; driver installation is handled by the full version, and it is not a substitute for repairing the FineReader or game that owns engine2.dll.
Fix 7: Check Windows Features and compatibility
Some older FineReader editions depend on Windows components or older application prerequisites. Do not enable random features because a DLL error appears.
To review optional Windows components:
- Press Windows + R.
- Type:
optionalfeatures
- Press Enter.
- Review the Windows Features list.
- Enable only a feature required by the application’s documentation.
- Select OK.
- Restart Windows if prompted.
If an older FineReader release works on one computer but not another, compare the Windows version, application architecture, installed prerequisites and user permissions. Newer FineReader documentation does not establish compatibility for every historical FineReader edition.
You can also test whether permissions are involved:
- Open the application’s installation folder.
- Right-click the FineReader or game executable.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Compatibility tab.
- Select Run this program as an administrator temporarily.
- Select Apply, then OK.
- Test the application.
If this works, the underlying problem may involve permissions, protected folders or security software. Do not leave compatibility settings enabled permanently unless they are needed.

If engine2.dll stopped working immediately after an update, cleanup operation, driver installation or software removal, System Restore may help.
- Press Windows + R.
- Type:
rstrui.exe
- Press Enter.
- Select Next.
- Choose a restore point created before the problem began.
- Select Scan for affected programs if available.
- Confirm the restore point.
- Select Finish and allow Windows to restart.
System Restore can revert system settings, installed programs and system files without removing personal documents. It cannot guarantee restoration of every application file, so repair or reinstall FineReader or verify the game afterward.

Why common DLL fixes fail
Do not download engine2.dll from a random website
Third-party DLL downloads can contain malware, the wrong version or the wrong architecture. Even a clean file may not match the application build, and replacing one DLL does not repair missing dependencies, registrations, permissions or damaged installation files.
Use the official FineReader installer, the hardware manufacturer’s bundled installer, or the affected game launcher instead.
Do not copy it into System32
Application DLLs normally belong beside the executable that loads them. Copying engine2.dll into System32 or SysWOW64 can cause the wrong program to load the wrong version and can create additional DLL search problems.

Do not run regsvr32 as a generic repair
regsvr32 is for DLLs that provide registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. A resource DLL or ordinary application library does not automatically support that process. Running:
regsvr32 engine2.dll
is therefore not a general fix and may produce another error.
Use regsvr32 only when the application vendor gives exact instructions for a specific component and command. That guidance for another ABBYY component does not establish that legacy engine2.dll should be registered.
Prevention and final checks
After the repair, confirm the following:
- The error names the correct application.
- The file is in that application’s installation directory.
- The file came from the application’s official installer or launcher.
- The application starts under the affected Windows account.
- The correct x86 or x64 prerequisites are installed.
- Windows Security is not removing the file.
- No unofficial copy remains in
System32orSysWOW64. - The application still works after a normal restart.
If only one user profile fails, create a temporary Windows account and test the program there. If it works in the new account, the original profile, permissions or per-user configuration may be damaged.
If the error remains, record the exact message, complete file path, application edition, Windows version, application architecture, recent updates or cleanup actions, and any related entry in Event Viewer > Windows Logs > Application. Those details distinguish a missing file from a blocked file, incompatible architecture or missing dependency.
FAQ
Is engine2.dll a Windows system file?
No. The filename is associated with application software, especially ABBYY FineReader and Source 2 games. It should not normally be downloaded or placed in a Windows system folder.
Is engine2.dll only used by FineReader?
No. A different file with the same name is used by Valve’s Source 2 engine. Always identify the application and path before repairing it.
What if engine2.dll is already present?
The file may be corrupted, the wrong architecture, blocked by security software, or unable to load a dependency. Repair the owning application first, then check the matching Visual C++ runtime.
Should I register engine2.dll?
No, not as a generic step. Resource and application DLLs do not automatically support self-registration. Use regsvr32 only for a vendor-documented component and command.
Will SFC restore the file?
Usually not. SFC repairs protected Windows files. FineReader files and game files should be restored through the owning application’s repair, reinstall or verification process.
What is the safest permanent fix?
For FineReader, repair or reinstall the exact ABBYY edition. For a Source 2 game, verify or repair the game files through its launcher. These methods restore the matching file and its related dependencies instead of introducing an unrelated DLL.
