dot3dlg.dll errors can appear as “The program can’t start because dot3dlg.dll is missing from your computer.” The file is a genuine Microsoft Windows component called 802.3 UI Helper, not a normal application runtime.
Which fix applies to you
Start with the situation that matches your error:
- The file is missing from Windows: Run DISM, then SFC. This is the primary repair.
- The error began after an update or cleanup tool: Install pending Windows updates, then repair the component store.
- Windows Security quarantined the file: Review Protection history before restoring anything.
- Only one application reports the error: Repair or reinstall that application after repairing Windows.
- The error appears on a corporate wired network: Check Wired AutoConfig and 802.1X events.
- The file exists but will not load: Check its location, signature, architecture, and dependent components.
- The error appears during startup: Use Windows repair tools rather than copying a DLL into an application folder.
- The problem began after a driver or system change: Try System Restore if DISM and SFC do not resolve it.
Do not download dot3dlg.dll from a random DLL repository. A copied file can have the wrong Windows version, architecture, or signature and may not repair the damaged component that caused the error.

What dot3dlg.dll does
dot3dlg.dll belongs to Windows’ wired Ethernet and IEEE 802.1X networking infrastructure. Its Windows file description is 802.3 UI Helper. It works alongside components including dot3api.dll, dot3msm.dll, dot3svc.dll, and dot3gpclnt.dll.

On 64-bit Windows, the expected locations are usually:
C:WindowsSystem32dot3dlg.dll
C:WindowsSysWOW64dot3dlg.dll
The System32 location contains native system files, while SysWOW64 commonly contains 32-bit compatibility files on 64-bit Windows. On 32-bit Windows, the expected location is generally:
C:WindowsSystem32dot3dlg.dll
The exact file version depends on the Windows release, build, architecture, and servicing level. Do not select a replacement based only on its filename or size.

Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Fix 1: Repair Windows with DISM and SFC
This is the safest first repair when dot3dlg.dll is missing, corrupt, or cannot load.
- Open Start.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Select Yes if User Account Control appears.
- Run this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for DISM to finish. Do not close the window if progress appears to pause.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows and try the affected program again.
DISM repairs the Windows component store. SFC then checks protected system files and replaces damaged copies using that repaired store. Microsoft recommends this order for missing or corrupted Windows files.
If SFC reports that it found corrupt files and repaired them, restart and test the program. If it reports that some files could not be repaired, run DISM again, restart, and run SFC a second time.
To save the relevant SFC results to your desktop, run:
findstr /c:"[SR]" %windir%LogsCBSCBS.log > "%userprofile%Desktopsfcdetails.txt"
Outbyte PC Repair can reduce the guesswork when you are repeatedly hunting through repair results and Windows logs. Its free scan shows what it identifies, while repair actions are handled by the full version; DISM and SFC remain the supported Windows repair path.
Fix 2: Install Windows updates, then repeat the repair
An incomplete update or damaged servicing source can prevent Windows from restoring dot3dlg.dll.
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install all available updates.
- Restart if Windows requests it.
- Return to Windows Update and check again.
- After updates finish, run DISM and SFC again as described above.
If DISM cannot obtain repair files through Windows Update, use a matching Windows installation source. The source must correspond closely to your installed edition and build.
For example:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:C:RepairSourceWindows /LimitAccess
Replace the example source path with the correct mounted or extracted Windows repair source. Do not use a downloaded standalone DLL as the source.
Fix 3: Check Windows Security quarantine
Antivirus software can remove or quarantine a system file after a scan, although the filename alone does not prove that the quarantined item was genuine.
- Open Start.
- Type Windows Security and open it.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent actions for a quarantined or removed Windows file.
- Open an entry to view its path, detection, and action.
- If the file is identified as malware or the path is suspicious, leave it quarantined.
- If it is clearly a genuine Microsoft file from the Windows directory and the detection is a verified false positive, use Restore from Protection history.
- Run DISM and SFC afterward.
- Perform a full scan. If malware is suspected, also use Microsoft Defender Offline scan.
If dot3dlg.dll keeps disappearing after restoration, stop copying it back. Review Windows Security, any other antivirus logs, disk health, and other unexplained system-file changes.
Fix 4: Repair the application that reports the error
A program may report a Windows DLL error because its installation is damaged, because it loads the wrong copy, or because another dependency is missing. If Windows itself is healthy and only one application displays the message, repair that application.
For a Microsoft Store or supported Windows application:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps.
- Find the affected application.
- Select its three-dot menu.
- Choose Advanced options.
- Select Repair.
- Test the application.
If Repair does not work, return to the same page and choose Reset when available. Reset can remove the application’s local data.
For a classic desktop program:
- Open Control Panel.
- Select Programs > Programs and Features.
- Select the affected program.
- Choose Repair or Change.
- Follow the installer steps.
- Restart Windows and test again.
If no repair option exists, uninstall the application, restart, and reinstall it using the developer’s official installer. A game launcher’s Verify, Scan and repair, or equivalent command is preferable to copying dot3dlg.dll into the game folder.
Reinstalling Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET is not the normal fix for this Windows system file. Consider those runtimes only when the application’s own documentation identifies a separate runtime error.
Fix 5: Check wired 802.1X networking
If the error occurs only when connecting to a corporate wired network, the surrounding problem may involve Wired AutoConfig, certificates, or another networking component.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems- Press Windows key + R.
- Type
services.msc. - Press Enter.
- Find Wired AutoConfig.
- Double-click it.
- Set Startup type to Automatic if your organization requires wired 802.1X.
- Select Start if the service is stopped.
- Select Apply, then OK.
Do not change enterprise authentication settings without your network administrator’s instructions. 802.1X failures can involve certificate expiration, certificate chains, revocation checks, or authentication policy rather than dot3dlg.dll itself.

If the issue began after a network adapter update, install the correct driver from the PC or adapter manufacturer. A driver update does not replace dot3dlg.dll, but it can address a separate wired-network failure.
Outbyte Driver Updater can show which installed drivers it identifies as stale instead of making you compare several adapter packages manually. Its free scan reports the findings, while driver installation is handled by the full version; use the computer or adapter manufacturer’s driver when your organization requires a specific package.

- Browse to
C:WindowsSystem32. - Look for
dot3dlg.dll. - On 64-bit Windows, also check
C:WindowsSysWOW64. - Right-click the file and select Properties.
- Open the Digital Signatures tab if available.
- Select the signature and choose Details.
- Confirm that Windows reports a valid Microsoft signature.
A file in an application folder is not automatically the correct Windows copy. Do not replace a signed system file with one downloaded elsewhere.
A 32-bit process and a 64-bit process can use different compatible copies. A wrong-architecture or wrong-build file may produce messages such as:
dot3dlg.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.Error loading dot3dlg.dll. The specified module could not be found.dot3dlg.dll file cannot be loaded
“Specified module could not be found” can also mean that a dependency could not be loaded even when dot3dlg.dll itself is present. Repair Windows first instead of assuming the named file is the only missing component.
Do not use regsvr32 as the first repair
This command:
regsvr32 dot3dlg.dll
is not the normal solution for a missing or corrupt protected Windows system file. regsvr32 is intended for registering DLL-based COM servers that expose the required registration entry point.
Recommended Free Tools
Running it against the wrong architecture, wrong copy, or damaged file can produce errors such as:
DllRegisterServer was not foundThe module failed to load
Restore the component with DISM and SFC instead. Manual registration should be considered only when specific software documentation or Microsoft support instructions require it.
Fix 7: Use System Restore or recovery repair
Use System Restore when the problem began immediately after an update, driver installation, cleanup utility, or other system change and normal servicing did not help.
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type:
rstrui.exe
- Press Enter.
- Select a restore point from before the failure.
- Select Scan for affected programs.
- Review the changes.
- Confirm the restore.
System Restore can revert system files, registry settings, drivers, and installed programs while preserving personal files.
If Windows cannot boot normally, enter Windows Recovery Environment and select Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Command Prompt or System Restore. In recovery, Windows may not be mounted as drive C:, so identify the correct Windows drive before attempting offline SFC.
Frequently asked questions
Is dot3dlg.dll malware?
The legitimate file is a Microsoft Windows component named 802.3 UI Helper. Location and digital signature matter. A file with the same name in a temporary, download, or unknown application directory should be scanned and investigated.
Should I download dot3dlg.dll?
No. Third-party DLL downloads can contain the wrong version, wrong architecture, altered code, or no matching Windows servicing information. Use Windows Update, DISM, SFC, matching installation media, or System Restore.
Do I need to reinstall DirectX or Visual C++?
Not for this file by default. dot3dlg.dll is part of Windows networking, not those redistributable packages.
Why does the file exist but the program still fail?
The application may be loading a different copy, the file may be damaged, a dependency may be missing, or the process may be using the wrong architecture. Run DISM and SFC, then repair the affected application.
What if the error appears during startup?
Repair Windows first. If the message names a program in Task Manager’s Startup list, disable that startup item temporarily and repair or reinstall the named program. Do not delete dot3dlg.dll from Windows directories.
When should I use Device Manager?
Use it only when the failure is tied to a wired network adapter or began after a driver change.
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Network adapters.
- Right-click the affected adapter.
- Choose Update driver.
- Select Search automatically for drivers, or install the manufacturer’s verified package.
- Restart Windows.
A Device Manager update will not normally restore dot3dlg.dll; it addresses a separate adapter or networking-driver problem.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
