For a Dota 2 FPS boost on Windows 10, start by checking your PC’s hardware, closing background apps, and lowering the game’s resolution or video settings. The right fix depends on what is limiting your system; meeting the game’s minimum requirements alone does not guarantee high FPS or smooth gameplay.
Check whether your PC meets Dota 2’s requirements
Steam’s current Dota 2 support page lists these minimum Windows requirements. They are specifications, not a promise of any particular frame rate.

These are the game’s listed minimums, not a benchmark or a target for high settings. Steam separately notes that the Steam Client supports Windows 10 and later starting January 1, 2024; that client-support baseline is distinct from Dota 2’s listed game requirement of Windows 7 or newer. Try software and settings changes first
Make one change at a time and check whether it improves performance. This makes it easier to identify the cause instead of changing several variables at once.

- Close unnecessary programs. Exit apps you do not need while playing, then remove unneeded startup apps in Windows so fewer processes compete for system resources. Steam says reducing background processes can have an immediate performance impact.
- Check available memory. Insufficient RAM can force Windows to swap data to disk and noticeably affect FPS. Higher model or water detail, HDR, and other video options can also require more memory; close memory-heavy apps before lowering several game settings at random.
- Update component drivers. Check the official driver channel for your CPU, graphics card, and audio hardware. Steam warns that outdated drivers can prevent components from using their capabilities.
- Lower resolution and video options. Try a lower display resolution and reduce graphics settings, then test the result. Higher resolutions and options above what your PC can handle can reduce FPS. Change settings gradually to find a workable balance.
- Use Steam’s configuration reset only as a troubleshooting step. Steam recommends trying
-autoconfigas an initial step for Valve-developed games, then adjusting settings gradually. Treat it as a way to troubleshoot configuration issues, not a guaranteed FPS improvement.
Valve’s general advice is to experiment with settings because performance depends on the specific PC. Its software troubleshooting guide states: “Simply meeting the system requirements does not mean you’ll have high FPS or strong in-game performance.”
If you play on a laptop or integrated graphics
Steam notes that notebooks may perform worse than systems with dedicated graphics and gives low shader detail and windowed mode as general suggestions for integrated-GPU systems. These are starting points rather than guaranteed Dota 2 fixes. If your laptop has both integrated and dedicated graphics, verify that the game is using the hardware you intend; the support guidance does not establish a universal setting or expected FPS for every laptop.

Decide whether an upgrade is justified
If the software changes do not help and your system falls below the requirements or is constrained by its graphics hardware or memory, an upgrade may be worth considering. Steam says upgrading the video card or memory can affect gameplay performance when a PC does not meet requirements, but it does not quantify the gain for a particular system.
- Check which component is actually limiting performance before buying anything.
- Choose a graphics card that is compatible with your PC and appropriate for your budget; the evidence does not support a universal “best” card or a promised FPS gain.
- Check your system’s memory type, capacity limits, and upgrade compatibility before buying RAM.
General troubleshooting cannot diagnose an individual PC with certainty. Dota 2’s FPS depends on the hardware, available memory, background load, resolution, and selected options, so use observed results on your own system to decide what to change next.
