It is a build project, not a documented ready-made retail console: the project repository provides a bill of materials (BOM), build instructions, PCB-ordering guidance and custom-shell documentation, but the available project pages do not establish that a complete console or turnkey kit is currently for sale.
What is dotMG?
dotMG is a hackable handheld game-console project built around the Arduboy platform and removable game cartridges. Its creator describes the idea as combining cartridges with Arduboy games. Hackster published a showcase of the project on May 10, 2021; that is the showcase’s publication date, not necessarily the console’s launch date. The dotMG project repository and Hackster project page document the design and point to build materials.
The repository describes a 2.44-inch, 128×64 high-contrast OLED, physical controls and analog volume control. It also documents a rechargeable battery and load-sharing circuitry intended to allow play while charging. Those are project specifications and design claims, not independent measurements: no battery-runtime or reliability test is established by the project pages cited here.
How do the cartridges work?
The removable game cartridges are based on Arduino Pro Micro boards. That makes cartridges the defining hardware difference from a handheld that keeps its games in onboard storage. A Pro Micro-compatible ATmega32U4 development board is a component to investigate, not a complete dotMG cartridge; check the project’s BOM and build guide for electrical and physical compatibility before choosing a board.

The project also documents protection against inserting a cartridge the wrong way. Its cartridge design should not be confused with a generic plug-in game card: the cartridge itself is based on a small development board.
Is dotMG compatible with Arduboy games?
The project calls dotMG Arduboy-compatible, but that label does not establish that every Arduboy game will work. Compatibility can depend on the individual game’s hardware assumptions and implementation. The available project documentation does not provide a game-by-game compatibility list, so check the specific game’s requirements rather than assuming universal support.

Compatibility is also not endorsement. The dotMG repository explicitly says the project is not officially licensed or endorsed by Arduboy.
What can you build or expand?
dotMG is intended to be customized beyond its core console. The project documents an EXT header exposing SPI, I2C and GPIO, which gives builders interfaces for their own hardware additions. The creator lists a crank, accelerometer, joystick, flash chip and RGB LED as examples of possible additions; these are ideas for custom expansions, not included accessories.

The repository links to a BOM, build and usage guides, PCB-ordering instructions and custom-shell documentation. Together, those materials make the project most suitable for hobbyists comfortable sourcing parts, assembling electronics and following project documentation. The cited pages do not establish a complete quoted parts cost, verified assembly time or a current source for a finished console.
