Double the Fun: How to Play Steam Games on 2 Monitors

Use Windows Extend and Borderless Windowed mode for the best dual-monitor Steam setup, or configure NVIDIA Surround and AMD Eyefinity when a compatible game must span both screens.

Yes, you can use Steam games with two monitors—but the best method depends on what you mean. Most players should use Windows’ Extend mode, run the game in Borderless Windowed mode, and keep Discord, a browser, OBS, or a map on the second screen. Stretching one game across both monitors requires NVIDIA Surround or AMD Eyefinity, plus a game that supports the resulting ultra-wide resolution.

Choose the setup you actually want

What you want Best method
Game on one monitor and apps on the other Windows Extend plus Borderless Windowed or Windowed mode
Launch the game on monitor 2 Use the game’s monitor setting, move its window, or temporarily change the primary display
Stretch one game across both monitors NVIDIA Surround or AMD Eyefinity, if the game supports the combined resolution
Show a game on another PC, TV, or mobile device Steam Link or Steam Remote Play
Give two players independent views Only when the game specifically supports that arrangement

Steam launches the game, but it does not provide a universal “use monitor 2” or “span across two monitors” switch. Display behavior is mainly controlled by Windows, your GPU driver, and the game’s own graphics settings.

Before you start

Connect both monitors to the graphics card, laptop, or dock and make sure Windows detects them. A laptop dock, USB graphics adapter, integrated GPU, or mixed-GPU setup may limit available resolutions, refresh rates, or display-group features.

For the most reliable setup, use compatible resolutions and refresh rates. Matching monitors are particularly helpful when spanning one game across both displays, although extended-desktop use is much more tolerant of different screens.

Play a Steam game on one monitor while using the other

1. Set Windows to Extend

  1. Open Start → Settings → System → Display.
  2. Select Identify to see which Windows number belongs to each physical monitor.
  3. Drag the display icons so they match the monitors’ physical positions on your desk.
  4. Under multiple-display options, select Extend these displays.

You can also press Windows + P and choose Extend. Microsoft’s display guidance explains that Extend lets you move windows between screens: Microsoft’s multiple-monitor instructions.

Do not choose Duplicate if you want separate content. Duplicate shows the same desktop on both displays.

2. Choose the right game display mode

Open the game’s Settings, Options, or Graphics/Display menu. Look for:

  • Display Mode or Window Mode
  • Monitor or Display Output
  • Resolution

For multitasking, try these modes in this order:

  1. Borderless Windowed or Windowed Fullscreen
  2. Windowed
  3. Exclusive Fullscreen, only if the other modes are unavailable or unsuitable

Borderless mode normally makes it easier to move the pointer to the second monitor without a disruptive resolution change. However, focus behavior, pausing, and performance vary by game. Steam Support also recommends switching from fullscreen to windowed mode when display handling causes problems: Steam’s fullscreen and windowed-mode troubleshooting.

3. Move the game to the preferred monitor

If the game has a Monitor, Display, or Output selector, choose the desired display there. This is usually the most reliable option.

If it does not:

  1. Start the game in Windowed mode.
  2. Drag the game window to the other monitor.
  3. Resize it or switch to Borderless Windowed mode if the game preserves its new position.
  4. Close and relaunch the game to check whether it remembers the monitor.

Alt + Enter toggles fullscreen and windowed mode in some games, but it is not a universal Steam shortcut. If the game repeatedly opens on the wrong screen, temporarily select that display in Windows Settings and choose Make this my main display. Launch the game, then restore your usual primary monitor afterward. This fallback can move desktop icons, taskbars, notifications, and other windows.

Keep the second monitor usable while gaming

Depending on the game, clicking another monitor may cause the game to pause, minimize, freeze, lose input focus, or confine the cursor. Borderless Windowed mode is the best first remedy, but it cannot override every game engine’s focus rules.

The second screen can hold:

  • Discord voice chat and messages
  • A browser-based map, wiki, or guide
  • OBS and streaming controls
  • Hardware-monitoring software
  • Music controls
  • Twitch chat or moderation tools
  • The Steam overlay or a game guide

Make one Steam game span both monitors

Windows Extend mode keeps the displays separate. To make a game see two monitors as one large surface, use a supported GPU display-group technology:

  • NVIDIA Surround for compatible NVIDIA hardware and drivers
  • AMD Eyefinity for compatible Radeon hardware and drivers

This is not guaranteed to work with every Steam game. The game must expose and correctly render the combined resolution and aspect ratio.

NVIDIA Surround

  1. Open NVIDIA Control Panel.
  2. Find the multi-display or Surround configuration area. Exact labels can vary with driver versions.
  3. Enable Surround and configure the two monitors as one combined display.
  4. Arrange the displays in their physical order and apply bezel correction if the option is available.
  5. Launch the game and select the new combined resolution in its graphics settings.

NVIDIA documents Surround display viewing and game-resolution behavior in its Surround configuration guide.

AMD Eyefinity

  1. Set up and arrange the monitors in Windows Display Settings.
  2. Open AMD Software and find the Eyefinity or multi-display controls. Menu names vary by release.
  3. Create a display group using the monitors’ physical arrangement.
  4. Apply the group and launch the game.
  5. Select the combined resolution if the game offers it.

AMD describes Eyefinity as combining two or more displays into one large desktop. Its documentation also explains that games supporting Eyefinity resolutions can use the combined surface, while unsupported applications may be assigned to a preferred display: AMD Eyefinity overview and AMD’s Eyefinity game guidance.

Expect compromises when spanning

Two 16:9 monitors side by side create a very wide combined desktop, but the exact resolution depends on each panel’s resolution, orientation, scaling, and driver support. The center bezel will interrupt the image, and unequal monitors may prevent a clean display group.

Common problems include:

  • Menus or HUD elements appearing in the wrong place
  • Stretched or distorted field of view
  • Letterboxed or stretched cutscenes
  • The game failing to list the combined resolution
  • Competitive games restricting unusual aspect ratios
  • Fullscreen transitions that temporarily disrupt the desktop
  • Lower performance because the GPU is rendering substantially more pixels

Do not assume that a game supports spanning simply because Surround or Eyefinity created the desktop. Check the game’s available resolutions and its wide-aspect-ratio behavior. If performance drops, reduce resolution, shadows, ray tracing, textures when VRAM is limited, or other demanding settings as appropriate. There is no universal FPS-loss percentage.

Use Steam Link or Remote Play on another screen

Steam Remote Play sends video and audio from the host PC to another PC, phone, tablet, TV, or compatible device and returns input to the host. That makes it useful for playing on another screen, but it is streaming—not independent local rendering on a second monitor. See Steam Remote Play.

Steam Link can therefore show a streamed session on another device while the host monitor remains active, but it does not automatically create two independent camera views. Separate views require game-specific support.

Remote Play Together lets additional players join supported local multiplayer, local co-op, or shared/split-screen games through streaming. Only the host needs to own and install the game, but the feature does not turn an ordinary single-player game into a two-monitor, two-camera experience. Steam’s developer documentation explains the supported model: Steam Remote Play Together documentation.

If a streamed image has the wrong shape, Steam Support recommends trying a 16:9 in-game resolution such as 1920×1080 or 1280×720, switching from fullscreen to windowed mode if those resolutions are unavailable, and changing the host desktop resolution if necessary: Steam Link resolution troubleshooting.

Fix common dual-monitor problems

The game opens on the wrong monitor

  1. Use the game’s own monitor selector.
  2. Switch to Windowed mode and drag the game to the desired display.
  3. Close and relaunch it.
  4. Temporarily make the desired monitor the Windows main display.
  5. Use a window-management utility for persistent placement.

The game minimizes when you click the second screen

Switch from Exclusive Fullscreen to Borderless Windowed. Disable a game’s “pause when unfocused” setting if it has one. A borderless-window utility can help only when the game lacks a usable native mode, and some anti-cheat systems or games may not tolerate third-party tools.

The second monitor goes black

  • Press Windows + P and select Extend.
  • Check the cable and the monitor’s input source.
  • Confirm that Windows still detects the display under Settings → System → Display.
  • Check resolution and refresh-rate settings.
  • Review the GPU driver’s display configuration.
  • Test whether a dock or adapter is limiting the connection.

The image spans both screens but looks wrong

Confirm that the game supports the combined resolution. Check its field-of-view setting, monitor resolutions, orientations, and bezel correction. If the game is forcing an unsupported aspect ratio, return to separate displays and run the game on one monitor.

The cursor will not leave the game

Exclusive fullscreen, game-specific cursor locking, controller-focused interfaces, or multi-monitor software can trap the pointer. Borderless Windowed mode is the first thing to try, although some games still lock the cursor deliberately.

Window-management tools: what they can and cannot do

Microsoft PowerToys, including FancyZones, is a free option for arranging ordinary windows and windowed or borderless games. It can provide custom zones, snapping, keyboard movement, and multi-monitor layouts. It does not replace NVIDIA Surround or AMD Eyefinity and cannot generally force an exclusive-fullscreen game across arbitrary zones.

DisplayFusion is a paid Windows utility with monitor profiles, window-position profiles, hotkeys, triggers, and monitor splitting. It can automate recurring game placement, but its Steam listing specifies Windows 10 and Windows 11 support—not Steam Deck, SteamOS, or Linux. Prices and discounts can change.

Borderless Gaming may help games that lack a native Borderless Windowed option, but native borderless support is preferable when available. Window-placement tools, borderless utilities, and GPU spanning solve different problems; none is a universal substitute for the others.

Two monitors or one ultrawide?

Setup Strength Weakness
Two monitors in Extended mode Excellent multitasking flexibility Bezel and focus issues during gaming
Two monitors with Surround/Eyefinity Very wide field of view Limited game support and awkward center bezel
One ultrawide monitor Cleaner panoramic gaming image Less separation between game and companion apps
One gaming monitor plus utility screen Best general-purpose compromise The game itself uses only one display

If immersive wide-screen gaming is your priority, an ultrawide is often cleaner than placing a bezel in the center of the image. If multitasking is the priority, two independent monitors are usually the more compatible choice.

Bottom line

For most Steam players, use Windows Extend + Borderless Windowed mode: run the game on one monitor and Discord, guides, streaming controls, or video on the other. Use the game’s monitor selector whenever possible. Choose NVIDIA Surround or AMD Eyefinity only when you specifically want one game to span both displays and the game supports the resulting resolution.
