Doug Bowser retired from Nintendo of America on December 31, 2025. Devon Pritchard became the subsidiary’s president the following day, while Satoru Shibata took on the role of chief executive officer. Nintendo’s announcement was made on September 26, 2025, so the news should now be described as a completed leadership transition rather than an upcoming retirement.
What happened to Doug Bowser?
Nintendo announced on September 26, 2025, that Bowser would retire from his positions as president and chief operating officer of Nintendo of America Inc. He also left his position as an executive officer of Nintendo Co., Ltd. His retirement became effective on December 31, 2025.

Bowser was not the president of the worldwide Nintendo company. He led Nintendo of America, the U.S.-based subsidiary responsible for Nintendo’s business in the Americas. Nintendo Co., Ltd., headquartered in Japan, remains the parent company.

Devon Pritchard succeeded Bowser as president
Devon Pritchard became president of Nintendo of America on January 1, 2026. Before the transition, Nintendo identified her as the company’s executive vice president of revenue, marketing and consumer experience. Earlier Nintendo announcements had also described her as an executive vice president overseeing sales, marketing and communications.
This was therefore an internal succession, not an outside hire. Pritchard had already held a senior, public-facing role at Nintendo of America, including responsibilities connected to sales, marketing and consumer relationships. Nintendo’s 2026 annual report lists her as president of Nintendo of America and an executive officer of Nintendo Co., Ltd.; Nintendo’s U.S. corporate page also identifies her as president and COO.
The available official materials establish Pritchard’s senior leadership position but do not provide a complete, reliable chronology of when she first joined Nintendo. It is more accurate to describe her as an internal promotion than to make an unsupported claim about the length of her Nintendo service.

Satoru Shibata became Nintendo of America’s CEO
The change was not simply a one-for-one replacement in which Pritchard assumed every title previously associated with Bowser. Nintendo’s announcement separately assigned Satoru Shibata the role of chief executive officer of Nintendo of America.
Shibata continued to serve as a managing executive officer and corporate director of Nintendo Co., Ltd. The distinction matters: Pritchard is president of Nintendo of America, while Shibata is its CEO. Describing Pritchard as Bowser’s replacement “as CEO” would inaccurately flatten the structure Nintendo announced.
Bowser’s Nintendo career
Bowser joined Nintendo of America in May 2015 as vice president of sales. He became senior vice president of sales and marketing in August 2016, then succeeded Reggie Fils-Aimé as president of Nintendo of America in April 2019.

Before joining Nintendo, Bowser spent eight years at Electronic Arts and 23 years at Procter & Gamble. He holds a communications degree from the University of Utah. These details come from Hasbro’s biography of Bowser.
His Nintendo tenure covered the later years of the Nintendo Switch’s commercial life and the transition to Nintendo Switch 2. Bowser remained Nintendo of America’s president during the Switch 2 launch in the Americas in 2025. Nintendo said Switch 2 sold more than 3.5 million units worldwide in its first four days, a historical launch-period figure rather than a current lifetime sales total.
That timing describes the period Bowser led Nintendo of America; it does not establish that he personally caused Nintendo’s sales performance or that Switch 2 was responsible for his retirement. Nintendo’s announcement did not cite product performance, dissatisfaction, or a strategic disagreement as the reason for the change.

Is Doug Bowser fully retired?
Bowser retired from Nintendo of America and from his executive-officer position at Nintendo Co., Ltd., but “fully retired” would be misleading. On January 20, 2026, Hasbro announced that he had joined its board of directors. That is a board position in Hasbro’s consumer-products business, not a return to Nintendo or a day-to-day video-game management role.
Hasbro’s announcement describes him as the retired president and COO of Nintendo of America. It is available in the Hasbro newsroom.
What changes for Nintendo of America?
The immediate change is leadership continuity during the Nintendo Switch 2 era. Pritchard takes over the presidency after serving in senior revenue, sales, marketing and consumer-experience roles, while Shibata holds the CEO position announced alongside her appointment.

- Handheld Nintendo Switch gaming at a great price
- Optimized for personal, handheld play, Nintendo Switch Lite is a small and light Nintendo Switch system
- Features a sleek, unibody design with fully integrated controls and a built in +Control Pad
- Compatible with all physical and digital Nintendo Switch games that support Handheld mode
That background suggests continuity in Nintendo of America’s consumer-facing operations, but the official announcements do not tie the succession to a new product strategy, policy, or organizational overhaul. The timing also should not be treated as evidence that Bowser’s retirement was caused by Switch 2’s performance. Nintendo announced the personnel change before the retirement took effect but did not state such a reason.
As of Nintendo’s official corporate materials published in 2026, Pritchard remains identified as president of Nintendo of America. The transition announced in September 2025 has therefore been completed, with Bowser no longer holding Nintendo’s Americas leadership role.
