On February 20, 2026, the company officially announced that Spencer was retiring from Microsoft and named Asha Sharma as the new CEO of Microsoft Gaming.
Those statements are not necessarily contradictory. The 2025 response rejected an imminent departure, not the possibility of Spencer retiring later. The accurate timeline is that the rumor was denied in July 2025, while Spencer’s eventual retirement became official more than seven months afterward.

What was the original Phil Spencer retirement rumor?
The rumor surfaced on July 2, 2025, shortly after Microsoft announced major layoffs affecting its gaming business. It claimed that Spencer would leave Microsoft Gaming after the launch of the next-generation Xbox.

The layoffs, canceled projects, studio changes and speculation surrounding Microsoft’s next console helped the rumor gain attention. However, a specific succession theory is not evidence that a leadership change has been decided.
What did Microsoft say in July 2025?
Xbox communications head Kari Perez told The Verge that “Phil is not retiring anytime soon.” Microsoft communications lead Frank Shaw separately described the account behind the rumor as “made up.”
Microsoft’s wording was important. It addressed the timing of Spencer’s departure and rejected the claim that he was about to leave after the next-generation Xbox launch. It did not promise that Spencer would remain at Microsoft indefinitely, nor did it provide a retirement date.

At the time, the available information supported this conclusion: Microsoft did not confirm that Spencer was preparing to retire soon, and the proposed Sarah Bond succession was not confirmed.
Was the July denial later proven false?
Not in the simple sense that Microsoft said Spencer would never retire. It did not say that.
“Not retiring anytime soon” is a time-limited statement. On February 20, 2026—more than seven months after the denial—Microsoft announced that Spencer had decided to retire from the company. The later announcement means Spencer ultimately did leave, but it does not by itself prove that Microsoft knowingly lied in July 2025.

Microsoft’s official account says Spencer made the decision to retire in 2025. Spencer wrote that he had discussed “stepping back” with Microsoft chairman and CEO Satya Nadella the previous fall and was beginning a new chapter. That suggests a planned transition whose timing and public announcement came later than the original rumor predicted.
The distinction is therefore:
- July 2025: Microsoft rejected an imminent or near-term retirement.
- February 2026: Microsoft formally announced that Spencer had decided to retire.
The February announcement is available on Microsoft’s official blog.
When did Phil Spencer’s retirement become official?
Microsoft announced Spencer’s retirement on February 20, 2026, as part of a broader leadership transition. The company said Spencer had spent more than 38 years at Microsoft, including 12 years leading its gaming business.

The announcement presented the change as a deliberate succession rather than an abrupt firing or an unverified leak. Spencer was described as working with the incoming leadership during the transition, while Microsoft thanked him for his service.
Who replaced Phil Spencer?
Asha Sharma was named executive vice president and CEO of Microsoft Gaming, reporting to Satya Nadella. Microsoft described Sharma as bringing experience in consumer products and ecosystems.
Matt Booty became executive vice president and chief content officer, reporting to Sharma. His appointment added continuity in gaming and studio leadership.

The successor was not Sarah Bond, despite the 2025 rumor’s speculation. Later reporting said Bond also left Microsoft during the February 2026 leadership changes; that detail should be distinguished from Microsoft’s official announcement, which focused on Sharma, Spencer and Booty. Reports on Bond’s departure were published by Pure Xbox and Game Informer.
An editor’s note on Microsoft’s announcement says that, as of April 23, 2026, Microsoft Gaming became known as XBOX and Sharma’s title became CEO XBOX.

Spencer was one of the most recognizable figures in Microsoft’s gaming strategy. Microsoft credits his tenure with expanding its gaming reach across PC, mobile and cloud, as well as with acquisitions including ZeniMax, Activision Blizzard and Minecraft.
Quick wins for a faster PC:

These were developments shaped by teams and executives across Microsoft, rather than projects that can automatically be attributed to Spencer alone.
His departure therefore represents a significant leadership change, but it does not by itself confirm a new console launch date, a change to Game Pass, an end to multiplatform releases or a change in Xbox’s hardware strategy. No such conclusions were established by the retirement announcement.
The corrected timeline
| Date | What happened |
|---|---|
| July 2, 2025 | A rumor claimed Spencer would leave after the next-generation Xbox launched, with some versions speculating that Sarah Bond would replace him. |
| July 2, 2025 | Microsoft said Spencer was “not retiring anytime soon.” Frank Shaw also called the rumor’s account “made up.” |
| Fall 2025 | Spencer later said he had told Nadella that he was thinking about stepping back. |
| February 20, 2026 | Microsoft officially announced Spencer’s retirement and appointed Asha Sharma CEO of Microsoft Gaming. |
| February 20, 2026 | Matt Booty was appointed executive vice president and chief content officer. |
| April 23, 2026 | Microsoft’s editor’s note said Microsoft Gaming had become XBOX and Sharma’s title had changed to CEO XBOX. |
Bottom line
The Phil Spencer retirement rumor was denied in July 2025 as an imminent departure, not as a permanent impossibility. Spencer’s retirement later became official on February 20, 2026, when Microsoft named Asha Sharma as his successor. The rumor was wrong about the timing and the proposed replacement, while the broader prediction that Spencer would eventually leave Microsoft Gaming became true months later.
