Down the Rabbit Hole is a VR adventure that critics generally admired for its imaginative, immersive take on Wonderland, while raising reservations about its story, character interactions, and short-feeling adventure. Metacritic lists a PC score of 68 from just four reviews, so the rating is a small-sample snapshot rather than a broad critical consensus.

What is Down the Rabbit Hole?

Set before Alice arrives in Wonderland, the game follows a girl searching for her lost pet. Players explore a three-dimensional, comic-book-like world, solve puzzles, uncover secrets, make choices about the girl’s backstory, and find invitations to a tea party. The developer describes the experience as a world that wraps around players and is navigated with their hands. Cortopia Studios’ launch announcement introduces the premise; the Steam listing and PlayStation Store listing describe the game and its features.

What do critics think?

Metacritic displays a PC Metascore of 68, categorized as “Mixed or Average.” Its four listed reviews break down into two positive scores, two mixed scores, and no negative scores. That is a limited sample, not a large survey of critics. Metacritic’s PC critic reviews show two scores of 80 (UploadVR and GMW3), one 60 (Adventure Gamers), and one 50 (TheSixthAxis).

What positive reviews praise

The strongest reviews value the unusual VR presentation, imaginative environments, puzzles, and polished execution. UploadVR’s March 24, 2020 review praised the game’s capacity for surprise while noting that some puzzles felt tame and the adventure ended too soon. GMW3 likewise praised the mechanics and execution but considered the experience too short. Both concerns temper the praise: the game’s creative presentation is a bigger draw than a lengthy or consistently demanding challenge.

Marvel's Deadpool VR Standard - Meta [Digital Code]
  • Become Deadpool in an original story made from the ground up for the Meta Quest.
  • As Deadpool you'll string together parkour and combat in a way that feels right out of the films.
  • Deadpool moments where the player can see and experience things only Deadpool can do, like drive a heavily armed jeep into a Helicarrier (and lose his head along the way).
  • Frenetic combat system where that's as crazy as you are. Pop an enemy up and throw a grenade to explode them into pieces? Check. Take your recently cut off arm and throw it at the bad guys? Gross, but also check.

What mixed reviews criticize

The lower-scoring reviews focus less on the world itself than on what holds it together. Adventure Gamers praised the VR recreation of Wonderland and engaging puzzles, but criticized the narrative and character interactions. TheSixthAxis found the vision of Wonderland impressive but questioned whether the game gave players enough reason to be there. If story and character writing matter as much to you as setting and exploration, the critical response suggests a more qualified recommendation.

Is Down the Rabbit Hole worth playing?

It is most appealing if you want to explore a distinctive Wonderland setting in VR and enjoy puzzle-led adventures. Critics’ praise centers on the environments, presentation, and puzzle moments; their reservations center on narrative, character interaction, and brevity. The four-review Metacritic sample cannot settle whether the game will work for you, but it points to a clear trade-off: imaginative VR world-building over a story or adventure that every reviewer found equally satisfying.
