For a launch failure after “Preparing to Launch,” Steam’s Dota 2-specific steps are to test -autoconfig and then -safe, one at a time. If the whole computer freezes, blue-screens, or restarts, treat it as a system-level problem rather than a normal game crash.
Before troubleshooting, identify what is crashing
Note your operating system, when the failure happens, any error text, and what changed recently. Distinguish a crash before the main menu from one during a match, and note whether only Dota 2 closes or the whole computer restarts. Those details help separate a game launch problem from a stuck Steam process or a system-level failure.
Steam’s Dota 2 troubleshooting article covers performance issues, crashes, and launch failures. Its steps are diagnostics, not a guarantee of one cause or one fix for every PC.
Try the low-risk fixes first
1. Restart Steam and your computer
Save any open work, fully exit Steam, restart the computer, then open Steam and try Dota 2 again. A fresh restart is Steam’s first general step for games that do not launch.

2. Update the operating system and device drivers
Install available operating-system updates and check for current drivers for your hardware. Steam’s general launch guidance applies across Windows, Linux, and macOS. If Dota 2 causes a Windows blue screen or full-computer restart, its Dota-specific guidance calls out BIOS and chipset driver updates from the motherboard manufacturer.
3. Verify Dota 2’s installed files
- In Steam, open Library.
- Right-click Dota 2 and choose Properties.
- Open Installed Files and select Verify integrity of game files.
- Wait for verification to finish before launching the game again.
Steam says verification can take several minutes. Some local configuration files may fail verification normally; Steam says those can be ignored. Avoid running verification while the computer is busy with other system-intensive work. See Steam’s file verification instructions.

4. Check for software conflicts and system requirements
Temporarily close non-essential applications that may interfere with the game, then test Dota 2. Also compare your system with the requirements on the game’s current Steam store page. These checks can narrow the issue down; they do not establish that a particular app or component is at fault.
If Dota 2 crashes during startup
If Steam gets as far as “Preparing to Launch” but Dota 2 does not open, try the Dota-specific recovery launch options separately. Steam says to use only one at a time.

- In Steam Library, right-click Dota 2 and choose Properties.
- Find Launch Options. Remove any existing options before testing.
- Enter
-autoconfig, close Properties, and launch Dota 2. - If it still fails, remove
-autoconfig, enter-safe, and test again. - Once the game launches, remove the option if you need to change video settings.
Follow Steam’s Dota 2 launch-failure steps for the full sequence. Do not apply generic launch switches just because they appear in Steam’s broader guide: Steam notes that examples for GoldSrc and Source games do not apply to most third-party games. In particular, the general launch-options page is not evidence that a generic switch such as -dxlevel fixes Dota 2: Steam’s launch-options guidance.
Choose the next step based on the symptom
Only Dota 2 closes during a match
Verify the files, check for system and driver updates, and test with non-essential software closed. Note whether the crash happens consistently under the same circumstances. The cited Steam support pages do not identify one universal cause for random in-game crashes.

Steam says “app already running”
A crash can leave a game process running even when its window has disappeared. On Windows, open Task Manager and close the hung Dota 2 process, then try again. Steam’s guidance for macOS and Linux recommends restarting the computer. See Steam’s stuck-process instructions.
Steam reports “Missing Executable”
Steam identifies security-software quarantine and a corrupt or failed download as possible causes. Check your security product’s quarantine; restore or allow a file only if you have confirmed it is the legitimate Dota 2 file. Then verify the game files. The whole computer freezes, blue-screens, or restarts
This is a system-level failure, not simply Dota 2 closing. Steam says blue or gray error screens indicate a problem with the computer. For Windows blue screens or restarts associated with Dota 2, check BIOS and chipset updates from your motherboard manufacturer. If the failure continues or you are unsure how to update firmware or drivers safely, seek help from the manufacturer or a qualified technician. Reinstall only after earlier steps fail
If restarting, updates, file verification, and the relevant launch-option tests do not help, Steam’s Dota 2 article includes reacquiring the game files as a later step. Follow its current instructions for your operating system. Do not move or delete unrelated Steam library data as part of troubleshooting.
Give support enough detail to investigate
If the problem persists, report your operating system, error text, crash timing, whether the computer itself restarts, and the steps you have already tried. Steam’s Dota-specific article directs players to the appropriate Dota issue forum for their platform.
