For Windows 10 64-bit, the current AMD Radeon RX 6900 XT page lists Adrenalin 26.8.1 (WHQL Recommended), released August 20, 2026, and Adrenalin 26.9.2 (WHQL Optional), released September 29, 2026. Windows 7 64-bit is limited to the legacy Adrenalin 22.6.1 package from June 21, 2022. AMD’s page has no Windows 8 or Windows 8.1 download tab, so there is no verified official RX 6900 XT package for those editions.
Use AMD’s official RX 6900 XT support page rather than a third-party mirror. The steps below explain which package to choose, how to install it, and what to do when Windows or the installer rejects the driver.

Which RX 6900 XT driver should you download?
Your operating system determines the correct package. AMD separates current Windows 10 support from the older Windows 7 legacy path, and it does not list a Windows 8 or 8.1 tab for this graphics card.

For a normal Windows 10 installation, start with 26.8.1 because AMD marks it Recommended. Version 26.9.2 is also an official WHQL package, but AMD labels it Optional. Optional does not mean unofficial; it is simply the less conservative choice when you want the newer release and are prepared to troubleshoot a regression.

What AMD says about Windows 7 and Windows 8
Windows 7 is permanently on the legacy path
AMD states: “Windows® 7 64-bit has been moved to a legacy support model and no additional driver releases are planned.” The 22.6.1 package dated June 21, 2022 is therefore the latest package shown for the RX 6900 XT’s Windows 7 route. Installing it will not put Windows 7 on the same driver stream as Windows 10.
Windows 8 and 8.1 are not listed
The official product page lists desktop tabs for Windows 11 64-bit, Windows 10 64-bit and Windows 7 64-bit legacy, plus Linux variants. It does not provide a Windows 8 or Windows 8.1 tab. That absence means you should not present a Windows 8 download as an official AMD option. If the card is running Windows 8 or 8.1, the dependable route is to move the computer to a Windows edition that AMD lists, then install the matching package for that edition.
Check your card and Windows edition before downloading
Confirm that the card is really an RX 6900 XT
- Press
Windows, typeDevice Manager, and open it. - Expand Display adapters. The entry should identify an AMD Radeon RX 6900 XT. If it appears as Microsoft Basic Display Adapter, the AMD driver is missing or not loading, but the hardware identity can still be checked under the device’s Properties and Details tabs.
- For a second check, press
Windows + R, enterdxdiag, open the Display tab and read the chip name.
AMD identifies this model as part of the Radeon RX 6000 Series, launched December 8, 2020. The reference product figures are 16 GB of GDDR6 memory, 300 W typical board power, an 850 W minimum power-supply recommendation and two 8-pin auxiliary power connectors. These figures help you distinguish the card from a similarly named Radeon model and explain why a marginal power supply or a loose connector can look like a driver problem.

Confirm that Windows is 64-bit
- Open Settings > System > About.
- Under Device specifications, read System type. The listed AMD packages in this guide are for 64-bit Windows.
- Press
Windows + R, typewinver, and note the Windows edition and build. Record this before changing drivers so you can identify whether a failure started after an operating-system update.
Download and install the official Windows 10 driver
Use the Recommended package first
- Open AMD’s official support page for the Radeon RX 6900 XT.
- Select the Windows 10 64-bit operating-system tab.
- Choose AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition 26.8.1, marked WHQL Recommended, and download the installer.
- Before running it, install any pending Windows updates and restart. AMD says its software and drivers are designed to work best with up-to-date operating systems.
- Run the downloaded installer, allow Windows’ permission prompt, and follow the Adrenalin setup screens. Keep the default components unless you have a specific reason to change them.
- Restart when the installer requests it, even if the display appears to work without a reboot.
- Open Device Manager > Display adapters > AMD Radeon RX 6900 XT > Properties > Driver. Check that the provider is AMD and that the date and version changed to the package you installed. You can also open the Adrenalin application from the Start menu to confirm that the software suite loads.
When to choose 26.9.2 Optional
Use 26.9.2 only after confirming that your game or application benefits from the newer package, or when 26.8.1 does not resolve a documented issue. Download it from the same Windows 10 tab and install it through the same process. If a new crash, black screen or application error begins immediately after moving to 26.9.2, return to the Recommended package rather than repeatedly reinstalling the Optional build.
Install the final Windows 7 package
- On AMD’s RX 6900 XT support page, select the Windows 7 64-bit legacy tab.
- Download AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition 22.6.1 Recommended (WHQL), released June 21, 2022.
- Finish Windows 7 updates first, then close games, recording software and overlays.
- Run the AMD installer as an administrator and follow its prompts.
- Restart Windows 7 and verify the driver in Device Manager > Display adapters > AMD Radeon RX 6900 XT > Properties > Driver.
Because AMD has ended new Windows 7 releases for this product, do not keep searching for a newer Windows 7 Adrenalin version on mirror sites. A newer-looking file from an unknown source is not evidence that AMD supports it.
Use AMD Auto-Detect when you are unsure
The RX 6900 XT page also offers AMD Auto-Detect and Install. AMD describes it as a tool that detects the Radeon model and the installed Microsoft Windows version, then offers the latest official driver package compatible with that system. It requires an internet connection.

- Axial-tech fans now feature a smaller fan hub that facilitates longer blades and a barrier ring that increases downward air pressure
- 2.5-slot design allows for greater build compatibility while maintaining cooling performance
- 0dB technology lets you enjoy light gaming in relative silence
- Dual BIOS switch lets you toggle between Quiet and Performance BIOS profiles
- Dual ball fan bearings last up to twice as long as sleeve bearing designs
- Download the Auto-Detect utility from AMD’s RX 6900 XT support page.
- Run it with the computer connected to the internet.
- Review the detected GPU and Windows version before accepting the suggested package.
- Allow the utility to download and install the official package, then restart and verify the result in Device Manager.
Auto-Detect is useful when Device Manager shows a generic name or you are uncertain which Windows tab applies. It cannot create a Windows 8 package that AMD does not publish; on an unlisted operating system, use the result as a compatibility check rather than forcing an installer.

Troubleshoot a failed or unstable installation
The installer says the operating system is unsupported
Recheck the edition and architecture in Settings > System > About. Windows 10 32-bit is not the Windows 10 64-bit path listed for this card. Windows 7 must be 64-bit, and Windows 8/8.1 has no listed tab. Do not rename an installer or edit its compatibility settings to bypass the check.
Windows still shows Microsoft Basic Display Adapter
Restart once more, then inspect Device Manager for a warning icon on the RX 6900 XT. If the AMD entry is missing, shut down and check that both 8-pin power plugs are firmly seated and that the monitor cable is connected to the graphics card rather than the motherboard video output. If the installer never completed, uninstall the failed AMD software from Settings > Apps > Installed apps, restart, and run the correct package again.

The screen goes black during setup
A brief display reset is normal while the graphics driver changes. Wait several minutes before powering off. If Windows does not return, restart and use Settings > System > Recovery > Advanced startup to reach Safe Mode, then remove the failed AMD software and reinstall the package marked Recommended for your edition.
Games crash after updating
Record which package was installed and when the crashes began. Disable third-party overlays temporarily, return to the Recommended Windows 10 build if you installed the Optional build, and test one game at a time. Persistent crashes can also result from overheating, unstable factory overclocks, insufficient power delivery or a failing card; a driver reinstall cannot repair those hardware conditions.
Windows replaces the driver after installation
Pause additional driver changes until Windows Update finishes, restart, and then check the version in Device Manager. If Windows has reverted to a generic driver, reinstall the AMD package after the update cycle completes and verify the version again.
Should you use a third-party driver mirror?
No. The official AMD page already provides the current Windows 10 Recommended and Optional packages, the final Windows 7 legacy package and the Auto-Detect utility. A mirror can change the file, omit release notes or bundle an installer you did not request. If a download page does not clearly identify AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition, the exact operating-system tab and the package’s release date, leave it alone.
Quick Recap
As an optional shortcut, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan more than 100 devices for outdated, corrupted or missing drivers, install official drivers, show current and recommended versions, create driver backups and restore points, and schedule scans. It runs on Windows 11, 10, 8 and 7; its free trial lasts two days without requiring a credit card, after which a subscription is required. Results vary, so verify the RX 6900 XT package against AMD’s official page before installing.
