Yes—the Rockstar Games Launcher is free to download for Windows. Get the official installer from Rockstar’s download page. The free application does not make GTA V, Red Dead Redemption 2, or other Rockstar games free: each game still requires a purchase, activation code, disc entitlement, or supported Steam/Epic ownership.
As of August 10, 2026, the latest official release note located for the launcher is version 1.0.108.2970, released July 10, 2026. The launcher may update itself after installation.

#1 Best Overall
- With broad game support, the Logitech Gamepad F310 works with old standbys to today's biggest titles, so it's easy to set up and use with your favorite games.
- Profiler software allows the gamepad to be programmed to perform keyboard and mouse commands for games without gamepad support.* * Requires software installation.
- A familiar control layout that doesn't require a learning curve to be able to use, with all the same buttons as on an Xbox 360.
- The unique floating D-pad rests on four switches-instead of a single pivot point-making it responsive to quick changes in direction.
- The six-foot cord lets you lean back and play a comfortable distance from your PC monitor.
- Prefer an installer downloaded from a rockstargames.com or socialclub.rockstargames.com page.
- Avoid cracked, repacked, modified, or unofficial installers.
- Third-party download catalogs can help with version history, but they should not replace Rockstar’s official download.
- The official page may redirect or load parts of its interface dynamically. That alone does not indicate a bad or invalid download.
Version and approximate download size
The latest official release note located for this guide is Rockstar Games Launcher 1.0.108.2970, dated July 10, 2026. Rockstar describes the release as improving title management through the launcher, without publishing a detailed feature-by-feature changelog. See the official 1.0.108.2970 release note.
Third-party listings place the installer at roughly 106–107 MB, but this is an approximate and changeable figure, not a size guaranteed by Rockstar. The installed launcher also adds supporting components, and the games themselves require considerably more storage.
Rockstar’s earlier 1.0.106.2850 update note documented support for Windows 11 26H1 and 26H2, along with stability and download-speed improvements. Do not assume that the version shown on a third-party download page will remain current.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesIs Rockstar Games Launcher free?
The launcher application is free. The games are licensed separately. Downloading and installing the launcher does not give you GTA V, Red Dead Redemption 2, Grand Theft Auto IV, or another paid title at no cost.
You need one of the following before you can play a particular game:
- A purchase made through the Rockstar Games Launcher or Rockstar Store.
- A valid Rockstar activation code.
- A supported Steam or Epic Games entitlement.
- A supported physical release or disc entitlement.
- Another supported ownership entitlement associated with the correct account.
The launcher is the software used to sign in, activate, download, update, detect, and start supported Rockstar PC games. It is not a free bundle of the games it manages. Rockstar’s old 2019 announcement included a limited-time Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas promotion; that historical offer should not be treated as a current giveaway.
Windows system requirements
These are Rockstar’s published minimum requirements for the launcher itself, not for GTA V, Red Dead Redemption 2, or any other game:
| Component | Minimum requirement |
|---|---|
| Operating system | Windows 10 64-bit |
| Processor | Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 at 2.40 GHz or AMD Phenom 9850 Quad-Core at 2.5 GHz |
| Memory | 2 GB RAM |
| Graphics | DirectX 11-supported graphics card |
| Storage | 1 GB for the launcher |
| Internet | Required for account sign-in or sign-up and game activation |
Check Rockstar’s current launcher system-requirements page before installing. Rockstar’s published baseline is Windows 10 64-bit. Later release notes specifically document launcher support for Windows 11 26H1 and 26H2, so old download pages that list Windows 7 or Windows 8 should not be used as current compatibility guidance.
Important: Meeting the launcher minimum does not mean that your PC can run a game. GTA V Enhanced, Red Dead Redemption 2, and other titles have their own CPU, GPU, RAM, and storage requirements. The 1 GB storage figure applies to the launcher, not to a full game installation.
Components installed with the launcher
The launcher may install or use more than one Windows component, including:
- Rockstar Games Framework
- Rockstar Games Authentication Software
- Chromium Embedded Framework
- Microsoft Visual C++ 2015–2019 Redistributable packages
- Windows Universal CRT
- Steam Client API
Seeing supporting folders or components in addition to the main launcher is therefore normal. Do not delete them casually while troubleshooting.

How to install Rockstar Games Launcher on Windows
- Open the official Rockstar Games Launcher download page.
- Download the Windows installer.
- Open your Downloads folder and double-click the installer you downloaded.
- Choose your preferred language, then select CONTINUE.
- On the Welcome screen, select CONTINUE.
- Read the License Agreement, accept it, and select CONTINUE.
- Choose where to install the launcher.
- Select CONTINUE to begin installation.
- When the installation finishes, select CLOSE.
- Start Rockstar Games Launcher from the Start menu or its desktop shortcut.
- Sign in to an existing Rockstar Games account or create a new account.
- Let the launcher update itself before trying to start a game.
- If prompted, allow it to scan the computer for supported existing installations.
The usual launcher folder is:
C:Program FilesRockstar GamesLauncher
The normal launcher executable is generally:
C:Program FilesRockstar GamesLauncherLauncher.exe
Those locations can differ if you selected another installation directory. Rockstar’s clean-install guide confirms the installer controls and folder locations.
Optional silent installation
For an unattended Windows deployment, Rockstar documents the /s /f switch. Open Command Prompt in the folder containing the downloaded installer and replace installer.exe with the actual filename:
installer.exe /s /f
The downloaded filename may vary, so do not copy that example literally unless it matches your installer.
Create or sign in to a Rockstar Games account
A Rockstar account is part of the sign-in and activation process; the launcher is not simply a portable browser for locally installed games.
Recommended Free Tools
Create an account
- Open Rockstar’s official account sign-up page.
- Enter your date of birth.
- Accept the displayed policies and terms.
- Enter your email address, password, and nickname.
- Check your email for Rockstar’s verification code and enter it.
- Return to the launcher and sign in with that account.
Rockstar recommends enabling two-step verification with a mobile or browser-based authenticator.
Choose the account carefully before activating anything. A Rockstar activation code is one-time use and becomes permanently associated with the Rockstar account signed in when it is redeemed. Linking the wrong Steam, Epic, or Rockstar account can be difficult to undo.
Install or activate a Rockstar game
Game purchased through Rockstar
Sign in to the Rockstar account that owns the game, open the launcher’s game library, select the title, and follow the installation prompts. For games purchased through the launcher store, Rockstar supports purchase, download, installation, automatic updates, launching from the game dashboard, supported cloud-save synchronization, settings management, and DRM services.

Redeem a Rockstar activation code
- Open Rockstar Games Launcher and sign in.
- Select your account avatar in the upper-right corner.
- Choose Redeem Code.
- Enter the activation code.
- Select Check.
- Review the entitlement shown on screen.
- Check the confirmation box.
- Select Redeem.
- Find the game under Games and install it.
An internet connection is required. Review the displayed game and account before selecting Redeem because the entitlement is permanently applied to the signed-in account. A Rockstar activation code is not the same thing as a Steam key. Rockstar says it cannot transfer or exchange keys between the Rockstar launcher and Steam platforms; see its guidance on PC game keys and exchanges.
Steam games
A Steam purchase remains a Steam entitlement. Steam continues to manage the installation and updates, while Rockstar’s account and launcher services may be part of the game’s authentication and launch process.
The safest first setup is:
- Open Steam.
- Start the Rockstar title from Steam.
- When prompted, sign in to the Rockstar account you actually intend to use.
- Verify the Rockstar account email if requested.
- Choose Play On Steam when the launcher presents that option.
Steam may need to be running when Steam-managed updates are required. Rockstar cloud saves may be available where the specific title supports them, but scanning a Steam installation does not turn it into a Rockstar Store copy.
Epic Games purchases
Epic ownership is also separate from a Rockstar Store entitlement. Start the game from Epic, sign in to the intended Rockstar account when prompted, and follow the account-linking screen. Do not create a fresh Rockstar account simply to get through the prompt if your games are already associated with another account.
Rockstar’s current PC account-unlinking policy says that Steam, Epic, and Xbox PC account-link changes may require support intervention, eligibility checks, and cooldown periods. Rockstar says support cannot bypass those cooldowns.
Physical-disc installations
A supported disc installation can sometimes be detected by the launcher, but it does not become a launcher-store installation merely because it appears in the library. The launcher may show Play on Disk or Play from Disc.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Rockstar’s disc-installation support information states that:
- Cloud saves are not currently supported for games installed from physical media.
- The launcher does not download, install, or update titles marked Play from Disc.
You should therefore keep the necessary disc and any other installation or update media required by the title.
Scan for an existing Steam or non-Steam installation
If the game is already installed, use the launcher’s built-in scan instead of immediately downloading another copy:
Settings > General > Scan PC for supported installs > Scan Now
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
For a detected Steam installation, the title generally appears in My Library with Play on Steam. Steam remains responsible for its installation and updates.
For a detected non-Steam installation, the launcher may show Play on Disk. Detection does not necessarily give the launcher control over installation, patches, or ownership. A Steam copy remains tied to Steam, and a disc copy remains tied to the physical release.
Do not confuse detection with license transfer. Scanning only tells the launcher where a supported installation is located. It does not convert a Steam key into a Rockstar key, change a disc entitlement into a digital purchase, or merge two separate game licenses.
Steam and Epic account-linking warning
Account linking is one of the most important parts of setting up a Rockstar game purchased from another PC store. Only one Rockstar Games account can be linked to a Steam account at a time.

- You know the email address of the Rockstar account that owns your Rockstar purchases and progress.
- You are not already signed into an unintended Rockstar account in the launcher.
- You are launching the game from the store where you purchased it.
- You are prepared to keep the platform association attached to that account.
Do not casually link a Steam, Epic, or Xbox PC account to a newly created Rockstar account. Depending on the platform and circumstances, correcting the link can require a support request and may be subject to a cooldown that Rockstar cannot remove. Read the Steam-linking instructions and the account-unlinking guidance before submitting a link.

If both a Rockstar Store copy and a Steam or Epic copy are installed, the launcher may detect both. Rockstar says only one copy of a game can be running per Rockstar account. In some situations, launching the Rockstar-associated copy may require removing the copy installed through the other launcher; check Rockstar’s duplicate-copy troubleshooting article before uninstalling anything.

- Midnight Club 2
Check the live Rockstar Games Launcher supported-titles article if your game is not listed or if you are using an older physical release.
Can you play Rockstar games offline?
Do not interpret offline support as meaning that every launcher feature works without internet access.
- Initial sign-in and activation: require an internet connection.
- Updates: require an internet connection.
- Online modes: require an internet connection.
- Cloud-save synchronization: requires connectivity.
- Story Mode: generally works offline after the required activation steps, subject to the particular game’s requirements.
Rockstar explains the conditions in its guide to playing games offline from the launcher. Before travelling or disconnecting, sign in and activate the game while online, install pending updates, and allow cloud saves to synchronize.

Work through these fixes from least destructive to most disruptive. Keep your Rockstar email address and password available before resetting profiles or reinstalling.
If the launcher problem is part of a broader Windows repair or stability issue, Outbyte PC Repair is an optional tool to consider alongside Rockstar’s app-specific steps; it is not required for the launcher.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →1. Check Rockstar service status
If sign-in, activation, or the library suddenly stops working, first check Rockstar service status. A service outage cannot be repaired by reinstalling the launcher.
2. Restart the launcher and Windows
Close the launcher completely, restart Windows, and open it again. This can allow a pending launcher update or authentication component to finish installing.
3. Run the launcher as administrator
Right-click the Rockstar Games Launcher shortcut and choose Run as administrator. If the game is launched through Steam or Epic, test the relevant store launcher as well, but avoid permanently running every application with elevated privileges unless necessary.
4. Remove unwanted compatibility mode
If a Windows 10-or-later PC reports Only Windows 10 and later are supported, compatibility mode may be forcing the wrong operating-system profile:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Close the launcher.
- Right-click the Rockstar Games Launcher shortcut and choose Properties.
- Open the Compatibility tab.
- Clear Run this program in compatibility mode for.
- Select Apply, then OK.
- Launch the program again.
Repeat the check for the game executable and, where applicable, Steam or Epic if either has compatibility mode enabled. See Rockstar’s Windows compatibility-mode troubleshooting.
5. Check Windows Security, antivirus, and firewall rules
Security software can block the launcher or its library service. Update the security software and add the launcher folder as an allowed exception if it is being blocked. Do not leave antivirus or Windows Security disabled; restore protection immediately after any controlled test, and prefer an allow-list entry over disabling protection.
6. Resolve the Library Service connection error
For Failed to connect to the Rockstar Games Library Service, Rockstar recommends checking service status, confirming the internet connection, running the launcher as administrator, checking Windows Update, reviewing security exceptions, and repairing or reinstalling the launcher if needed. The full sequence is in Rockstar’s Library Service error guide.
Rockstar’s connection troubleshooting page lists these network targets:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches- Download: 7.5 Mbps
- Recommended upload: 1 Mbps
- Minimum upload: 0.5 Mbps
- Listed UDP ports: 6672, 61455, 61457, 61456, and 61458
These are Rockstar’s troubleshooting targets, not universal minimums for every game, router, or network. Consult the official connection troubleshooting article before changing router or firewall rules.
7. Verify game files
For a launcher-managed installation, open:
Settings > select the game > Verify Integrity
Let the process finish, then try the game again. This is safer than deleting the game folder and redownloading everything. Rockstar documents the procedure in its game-file verification guide.
8. Reset the local launcher profile
If the launcher still will not start a title, use:
Settings > Account information > Delete local profile
Sign in again afterward. This resets local auto-sign-in settings, so you must know the correct Rockstar email address and password. It does not replace the underlying game entitlement. Follow Rockstar’s title-not-launching guidance.

9. Perform a clean launcher reinstall
Use a clean reinstall only after the simpler steps fail. Rockstar’s sequence is:
- Close all Rockstar games and the launcher.
- Open the launcher installation folder.
- Run
uninstall.exe. - Leave uninstall the game data unchecked.
- Delete only the launcher and Social Club folders specified by Rockstar.
- Restart Windows.
- Download the latest installer from the official Rockstar URL.
- Install the launcher again.
- Sign in and allow it to scan for previously installed games.
The folders listed in Rockstar’s clean-install instructions are:
%USERPROFILE%DocumentsRockstar GamesSocial Club%USERPROFILE%DocumentsRockstar GamesLauncherC:Program FilesRockstar GamesLauncherC:Program FilesRockstar GamesSocial ClubC:Program Files (x86)Rockstar GamesSocial Club
Do not delete arbitrary Rockstar folders, game directories, or save-data folders. Rockstar warns that removing files outside the specified clean-install sequence can cause lost game data. Use the official clean-install guide and preserve your game data unless you intentionally want to remove it.
10. Collect launcher logs for support
Launcher logs are generally stored at:
C:UsersUSERNAMEDocumentsRockstar GamesLauncher
Replace USERNAME with your Windows account name. These files can help Rockstar Support diagnose connection, update, authentication, and launch failures. See the official launcher error-log instructions.
Advanced case: the launcher shows Play on Steam instead of Install
If you own a Rockstar Store copy but the launcher detects an existing Steam copy and shows Play on Steam, the existing Steam files may be controlling the detection.
Rockstar’s documented workaround involves closing Steam, temporarily renaming the existing Steam game folder, restarting Rockstar Games Launcher, installing the Rockstar version, and restoring the folder name afterward. This is an advanced procedure: it can cause another copy to be downloaded, and the correct folder depends on your Steam library. Follow the specific Play on Steam troubleshooting article rather than guessing which folder to rename.
Using the launcher on more than one PC
You can install Rockstar Games Launcher on multiple Windows PCs, but Rockstar says only one PC can be signed in to Rockstar Games through the launcher at a time.
Supported purchases, cloud saves, and progress can synchronize after signing in, where the title supports those features. Disc installations, unsupported titles, and some Steam-launched games may need to be configured again on each computer. See Rockstar’s multiple-PC installation guidance.
Is the launcher worth installing?
Installing it makes sense if you own a Rockstar PC title bought directly from Rockstar, need to redeem a Rockstar code, or have a Steam or Epic game that invokes Rockstar authentication or launcher services. It can also be useful for supported existing physical or non-Steam installations that it can detect.
The trade-offs are straightforward:
| Advantages | Limitations |
|---|---|
| Official access to Rockstar’s PC game ecosystem | It adds another account and background application for Steam or Epic users |
| Direct purchase, download, installation, and automatic updates for launcher-store titles | A free launcher does not include paid games |
| Cloud saves for eligible titles | Account linking can be difficult to reverse |
| Can scan for supported Steam and non-Steam installations | Steam copies remain dependent on Steam for installation and updates |
| Centralized access to supported Rockstar titles | Physical-disc installations do not receive launcher-managed cloud saves or updates |
The official launcher is a Windows application. macOS and Linux are not official launcher platforms. Compatibility layers such as Proton or Wine may be community workarounds, but they are outside Rockstar’s official Windows support path.
Before you start: a quick checklist
- Use the official Rockstar download URL.
- Confirm that Windows is 10 64-bit or a supported later Windows release.
- Keep at least 1 GB available for the launcher, plus the much larger space required by your game.
- Know whether your game belongs to Rockstar, Steam, Epic, or a physical release.
- Sign in to the Rockstar account that should receive the entitlement.
- Do not redeem a code or link a store account until you have confirmed the account.
- Keep an internet connection available for sign-in, activation, updates, and cloud synchronization.
- Use Scan PC for supported installs if the game is already installed.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Rockstar Games Launcher safe to download?
The safest source is Rockstar’s official download page at socialclub.rockstargames.com/rockstar-games-launcher. Avoid cracked or modified installers. If security software blocks the official launcher, use an allow-list exception after confirming the download source rather than leaving protection disabled.
Does downloading Rockstar Games Launcher give me GTA V for free?
No. The launcher is free, but GTA V and other games require a separate purchase, activation code, supported Steam/Epic entitlement, or supported physical release.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Do Steam Rockstar games need the Rockstar Games Launcher?
Steam remains responsible for a Steam installation, but Rockstar authentication or launcher services may still be part of the launch process. Start the title from Steam and link it to the intended Rockstar account. Steam may also need to be running for Steam-managed updates.
Can I use Rockstar Games Launcher on Windows 7 or Windows 8?
Rockstar’s current published launcher requirement is Windows 10 64-bit. Do not rely on older third-party pages that still list Windows 7 or Windows 8. Rockstar has also documented support for Windows 11 26H1 and 26H2 in a later launcher update note.
Can I install Rockstar Games Launcher on macOS or Linux?
The official launcher is a Windows application. macOS and Linux are not official launcher platforms. Compatibility-layer solutions may exist in the community, but they are outside Rockstar’s official support path.
What should I do if the launcher does not detect my existing game?
Open Settings > General > Scan PC for supported installs > Scan Now. Confirm that the game is one of Rockstar’s supported titles and that you are using the account and store platform associated with it. A scan detects files; it does not transfer ownership from Steam, Epic, or a disc release.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Can I move a Rockstar game to another drive?
For eligible games purchased and installed through the Rockstar launcher store, use Settings > My installed games > select the game > Move Installation, choose the destination, and select Move. This procedure does not necessarily apply to Steam or physical-disc installations.
What if I linked the wrong Steam or Epic account?
Do not repeatedly unlink and relink accounts. Rockstar’s current PC unlinking policy says that Steam, Epic, and Xbox PC account changes may require support handling and can involve cooldown periods that support cannot bypass. Contact Rockstar Support with the affected accounts and purchase information.
The Bottom Line
Download the free launcher only from Rockstar’s official page: socialclub.rockstargames.com/rockstar-games-launcher. Install it on supported 64-bit Windows, sign in to the correct Rockstar account, then either install the game you own, redeem a Rockstar code, or scan for an existing Steam, non-Steam, or disc installation. The launcher is free; the game license is not automatically included.
