“The program can’t start because dpcdll.dll is missing from your computer.”
“dpcdll.dll was not found.”

You may also see “There was a problem starting dpcdll.dll,” “Error loading dpcdll.dll. The specified module could not be found,” or “dpcdll.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.”

The 60-second answer

dpcdll.dll is a genuine Microsoft Windows system DLL known as Dpcdll Module. The strongest documented association is with Windows XP-era installations, not with a current Visual C++ Redistributable, DirectX package, .NET runtime, or modern driver package.

On Windows 10 or Windows 11, do not download a replacement DLL from a random website. First repair Windows from an elevated Terminal or Command Prompt:

Restart when both commands finish, then try the affected program again.

If the message appears only when starting one old application, the application may be requesting an obsolete Windows XP component or may have its own damaged files. In that case, repair or reinstall the application from its original vendor source instead of placing dpcdll.dll into its folder.

What dpcdll.dll is and why the error is confusing

Public Windows file inventories identify dpcdll.dll as Dpcdll Module, supplied by Microsoft as part of Windows. Historical Microsoft support material associates a missing or damaged copy with Windows Update and startup failures, including errors such as 0x800705AA, 0x8007007E, and 0x80004005.

That does not prove that every Windows 10 or Windows 11 installation should contain the file. The file is most strongly associated with Windows XP-era system files. A modern program can still display the filename if it was built for an older Windows environment, if it bundles an old dependency, or if another required module is missing.

The wording “The specified module could not be found” also needs care. Windows may be reporting that a dependency required by dpcdll.dll is missing rather than proving that dpcdll.dll itself is absent.

Possible causes include:

  • Windows system-file corruption or deletion
  • An interrupted Windows Update or repair
  • Antivirus quarantine
  • Malware cleanup that removed or changed a file
  • A failing disk or damaged Windows installation
  • An old program expecting Windows XP files
  • A wrong or incompatible DLL architecture
  • A damaged application installation

Before repairing anything, identify the context

The correct repair depends on where the error appears.

If it appears during Windows startup or sign-in

Treat it as a Windows installation problem first. Record the complete message and any error code. Do not copy a DLL into System32 or SysWOW64 before checking Windows with DISM and SFC.

If it appears during Windows Update

Run the Windows Update troubleshooter, then repair Windows components. Windows Update errors historically associated with this filename include 0x800705AA, 0x8007007E, and 0x80004005.

If it appears only when launching one application

The application may be the real source of the request. Note the executable name shown in the error, the installation location, and whether the program is old or was recently reinstalled. Repair or reinstall that application using its original installer or the software publisher’s official media.

If it appeared after antivirus cleanup

Check Protection History before restoring anything. A missing file is not automatically evidence of malware, but an unknown or unsigned DLL should not be restored merely because an application requests it.

Check the Windows version

Press Windows key + R, type:

winver

Press Enter. Confirm whether the machine is running Windows 10, Windows 11, Windows XP, or an embedded or specialized XP derivative.

Windows XP reached end of support on April 8, 2014. Modern Microsoft repair workflows do not provide the same support for XP, so use the XP-specific guidance later in this article rather than applying Windows 10 or Windows 11 commands blindly.

Fix 1: Repair Windows with DISM and SFC

This is the safest first repair for Windows 10 and Windows 11 when the error appears during startup, Windows Update, recovery, or multiple applications.

DISM repairs the Windows component store. SFC then checks protected system files and replaces damaged copies using that repaired source.

Open an elevated Command Prompt

  1. Open Start.
  2. Type Command Prompt.
  3. Right-click Command Prompt.
  4. Select Run as administrator.
  5. Select Yes if User Account Control asks for permission.

You can also use Windows Terminal as administrator. The commands are the same.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Run DISM

Enter this command exactly:

DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth

Press Enter and wait for it to finish. The scan can appear to pause for a while. Do not close the window while it is working.

A successful result says that the restore operation completed successfully. If DISM reports that it cannot find source files, restart Windows and run Windows Update before trying DISM again. If it still fails, continue with the Windows Update and repair-reinstall steps below rather than downloading a DLL.

Run System File Checker

After DISM completes, enter:

sfc /scannow

Press Enter and let the verification reach 100 percent.

The useful results are:

  • Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations: protected files appear intact. Restart and test the program.
  • Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired them: restart and test the program.
  • Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them: run DISM again, restart, and repeat SFC once. If it still cannot repair the file, use System Restore or a supported repair reinstall.
  • Windows Resource Protection could not start the repair service: restart into normal Windows and run Command Prompt as administrator again. If Windows cannot boot normally, use the Windows Recovery Environment.

After restarting, test the same action that produced the error. If the message returns only for one application, Windows may be repaired and the application may be the remaining problem.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If repeatedly hunting through component versions and rerunning SFC and DISM leaves you unsure what changed, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for reported Windows problems; its free scan shows what it found, while repair is performed by the full version, and it is not required for the Microsoft repair steps above.

Fix 2: Run the Windows Update troubleshooter

A damaged or incomplete update can leave system files inconsistent.

Windows 10 and Windows 11

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select System.
  3. Select Troubleshoot.
  4. Select Other troubleshooters.
  5. Find Windows Update.
  6. Select Run.
  7. Follow the recommendations.
  8. Restart the computer.
  9. Open Settings > Windows Update.
  10. Select Check for updates.

Run DISM and SFC again after Windows Update finishes. If Windows Update itself fails, write down the displayed error code rather than trying unrelated runtime installers.

Fix 3: Use the Windows 11 repair reinstall

Windows 11 may offer a supported repair reinstall that preserves applications, personal files, and settings.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select System.
  3. Select Recovery.
  4. Find Fix problems using Windows Update.
  5. Select Reinstall now if the option is available.
  6. Keep the computer connected to power and follow the prompts.
  7. Restart and test the affected program.

This option is not available on every Windows installation. If it is missing, use System Restore or installation media through Microsoft’s supported recovery process.

Fix 4: Use System Restore

System Restore can roll back system files and settings without removing personal files. It is especially useful if the error began immediately after an update, driver change, cleanup utility, or software installation.

From Windows

  1. Press Windows key + R.
  2. Type:
rstrui.exe
  1. Press Enter.
  2. Select Next.
  3. Choose a restore point dated before the error began.
  4. Select Next, then Finish.
  5. Allow Windows to restart.

From the recovery environment

If Windows will not start normally:

  1. Hold Shift while selecting Restart, or interrupt startup until Windows enters recovery.
  2. Select Troubleshoot.
  3. Select Advanced options.
  4. Select System Restore.
  5. Choose an administrator account if requested.
  6. Select a suitable restore point.
  7. Complete the restore and restart.

System Restore does not guarantee that an application’s own files will be repaired. If Windows starts normally afterward but one program still reports dpcdll.dll, repair that program.

Fix 5: Check Microsoft Defender Protection History

If the problem began after malware removal or antivirus activity, Windows Security may have quarantined a file.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Start.
  2. Type Windows Security.
  3. Open it.
  4. Select Virus & threat protection.
  5. Select Protection history.
  6. Review detections around the time the error began.
  7. Expand a relevant detection and review its path, threat name, and action.

Only restore a file when its location, signature, and origin are trusted and you have verified that it is a false positive. Microsoft warns that restoring a detected threat may cause Defender to detect it again. An unknown, unsigned, or incorrectly located DLL should remain quarantined.

For a Windows component, the safer recovery is DISM, SFC, System Restore, or trusted installation media. Afterward, run a full Microsoft Defender scan.

Fix 6: Repair or reinstall the affected application

If Windows passes SFC and the error appears only with one program, the application may be requesting an old dependency.

Try the built-in repair option

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select Apps.
  3. Select Installed apps.
  4. Find the affected application.
  5. Select the three-dot menu beside it.
  6. Select Advanced options, if shown.
  7. Select Repair.
  8. Start the application again.

If there is no Repair option, open Control Panel > Programs > Programs and Features, select the application, and look for Change, Repair, or Modify.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Reinstall from trusted media

If repair does not help:

  1. Back up the application’s settings and data if necessary.
  2. Uninstall the application.
  3. Restart Windows.
  4. Obtain the installer from the software publisher or original installation media.
  5. Install the correct release for the operating system and application architecture.
  6. Restart and test it.

Do not place a downloaded dpcdll.dll into the program folder unless the software publisher explicitly provides that exact file for that exact release. Reinstalling the affected application remains the definitive fix when its own installation is damaged.

Fix 7: Check 32-bit and 64-bit compatibility

A 32-bit application running on 64-bit Windows does not use every DLL location in the same way as a 64-bit application. Windows also treats System32 and SysWOW64 as architecture-specific locations. They are not interchangeable folders.

To check the operating system type:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select System.
  3. Select About.
  4. Review System type.

To identify the application involved, right-click its shortcut, select Properties, and review the target path. If the application is old, check its official documentation for supported Windows versions and architecture.

Do not copy one DLL into both C:WindowsSystem32 and C:WindowsSysWOW64. A wrong architecture can produce a new loader error, and an arbitrary file may introduce a security problem. Windows’ DLL search behavior is path-sensitive and architecture-sensitive.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fix 8: Update a driver only when the error context points to hardware

There is no verified file-specific basis for treating dpcdll.dll as a particular current driver component. Do not install a driver simply because a DLL error appeared.

If the error began after a graphics, storage, chipset, printer, or other hardware change, use the hardware manufacturer’s official driver package.

You can also check Windows Device Manager:

  2. Select Device Manager.
  3. Expand the relevant category.
  4. Right-click the device.
  5. Select Properties.
  6. Review the General and Driver tabs.
  7. Use Update driver only when you have a trusted source or Windows identifies a suitable driver.
  8. Restart after an update.

When several devices have stale drivers, manually identifying the correct model, architecture, and release can take considerable time. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and show reported driver problems; the free scan identifies issues, while driver installation is performed by the full version, and a driver update is not a guaranteed fix for dpcdll.dll.

Does regsvr32 repair dpcdll.dll

Usually, no.

regsvr32 registers certain self-registering DLLs that export DllRegisterServer. It is not a universal system-file repair command, and there is no verified reason to assume that dpcdll.dll should be registered manually.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not run:

regsvr32 dpcdll.dll

as a routine response to a missing-file message. It can produce another error and distract from the actual problem. Use it only when the application’s official documentation specifically instructs you to register that exact DLL and provides a trusted copy.

Windows XP and embedded XP systems

If the affected computer really runs Windows XP, do not use the Windows 10 or Windows 11 DISM workflow as though it were interchangeable.

Use these recovery options, in order:

  1. System Restore: press Windows key + R, enter rstrui.exe, and choose a restore point from before the failure.
  2. Matching installation media: use the original Windows XP edition and language, with the appropriate Service Pack level.
  3. Windows File Protection or recovery tools: follow the procedures available for that exact XP installation.
  4. In-place repair: use matching installation media and back up important data first.
  5. Hardware replacement or migration: if the disk or installation is unstable, preserve data and plan a supported operating system migration.

Do not use a DLL copied from an unrelated XP edition, language, architecture, or Service Pack level. If SFC repeatedly fails or the system produces disk errors, investigate the storage device before replacing individual files.

Windows XP has been unsupported since April 8, 2014. Avoid exposing an XP machine directly to current networks while troubleshooting, and use trusted offline media where practical.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What not to install

dpcdll.dll is not a verified Visual C++ Redistributable, DirectX, or .NET runtime component. Reinstalling those packages is not an evidence-based fix for this filename.

Avoid:

  • Generic DLL download sites
  • Registry cleaners that promise automatic DLL repair
  • “One-click” driver or system repair packages that do not show their sources
  • Copying a DLL into both system directories
  • Replacing a quarantined file without checking its signature and location
  • Registering a system DLL with regsvr32 without vendor instructions

The safe sources are Windows’ own repair mechanisms, trusted Microsoft installation media, System Restore, Microsoft Defender’s documented controls, and the affected application’s official installer.

When SFC and DISM still cannot repair the file

If the commands fail repeatedly:

  1. Restart Windows and run them once more from an administrator Command Prompt.
  2. Run Windows Update and retry.
  3. Use System Restore.
  4. On Windows 11, use Settings > System > Recovery > Fix problems using Windows Update > Reinstall now when available.
  5. Check the disk with:
chkdsk /f C:

Windows may schedule the check for the next restart. Save work before accepting that prompt.

  1. Review whether the error began after malware cleanup, a failed repair, or a storage problem.
  2. Back up personal data.
  3. Use official Windows installation media for a repair installation or reset, selecting the option that preserves data only after confirming the backup.

If only one old application remains affected after Windows repairs successfully, stop treating the issue as a system-wide DLL failure and repair or replace that application.

FAQ

Is dpcdll.dll a Microsoft file?

Yes. It is identified as Dpcdll Module and associated with Microsoft Windows. Its strongest documented association is with Windows XP-era system files.

Should I download dpcdll.dll?

No. A downloaded copy may have the wrong version, language, architecture, signature, or dependency set. It may also leave the underlying Windows corruption or application problem unresolved.

Does Windows 11 normally need dpcdll.dll?

The file is not established as a standard component of every modern Windows 11 installation. If a modern application requests it, verify the calling program and its installation before assuming that Windows itself is missing a current file.

Will Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET reinstall fix it?

There is no verified file-specific evidence that those runtimes install or repair dpcdll.dll. Use DISM and SFC for Windows corruption, or repair the application that reports the error.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I copy the file to System32?

Do not do so with an arbitrary download. System32 and SysWOW64 serve different architecture paths, and an incorrect copy can create additional failures.

Why does the message say a module is missing when the DLL is present?

The missing item may be a dependency loaded by dpcdll.dll. The error text does not always identify the first missing file.

What if the error appears after Defender removed the file?

Review Windows Security > Virus & threat protection > Protection history. Restore only a verified false positive from a trusted location. Otherwise repair Windows from trusted media and scan the system.

Is regsvr32 required?

Normally not. Registration applies only to DLLs designed to self-register and does not repair ordinary Windows system-file corruption.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What is the most reliable fix?

On Windows 10 and Windows 11, run DISM followed by SFC, restart, and test again. If one legacy application still fails, repair or reinstall that application. For Windows XP, use matching installation media, System Restore, or an in-place repair while recognizing that the operating system is no longer supported.
