Windows may display one of these messages when an older imaging application or plug-in starts:

  • This application has failed to start because SPROF32.dll was not found. Re-installing the application may solve this problem.
  • The program can't start because sprof32.dll is missing from your computer.
  • sprof32.dll was not found.
  • The code execution cannot proceed because sprof32.dll was not found.
  • sprof32.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.

sprof32.dll is a 32-bit Kodak color-management library, and the sprof32.dll error usually means an older application or plug-in can no longer find its Kodak component.

The 60-second answer

sprof32.dll is not a Windows file, Microsoft runtime, DirectX component, or normal Visual C++ Redistributable file. It is associated with the KODAK DIGITAL SCIENCE ICC Profile API, an older Kodak Digital Science/Kodak Color Management System component developed by Eastman Kodak Company.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The safest fix is to identify the program named in the error, then repair or reinstall that complete application, Photoshop plug-in, printer package, or imaging component using its original installer or a legitimate vendor recovery source.

Do not download an isolated copy of sprof32.dll from a random DLL website. A replacement can be the wrong Kodak build, wrong architecture, modified, or missing the companion Kodak libraries that the calling application also needs.

The commonly catalogued file is 32-bit, version 1.8.1.0, and approximately 0.13 MB. Those are catalog records rather than proof of a currently supported Kodak download, so use them for identification only.

What sprof32.dll actually does

The file is described as KODAK DIGITAL SCIENCE ICC Profile API. It belongs to the older Kodak color-management software used to interpret and work with ICC color profiles.

That made it useful to software handling:

  • Photo CD images
  • Photoshop color-management extensions
  • Image editors and viewers
  • Printing and proofing workflows
  • Older graphics applications
  • Kodak imaging or printer utilities
  • Legacy applications that depended on Kodak Digital Science CMS

Historical Kodak CMS installations placed several related files together, including sprof32.dll, kpcp32.dll, kpapi32.dll, kpsys32.dll, and pcdlib32.dll. Some older documentation also refers to a KPCMS folder at the root of a drive.

This is why copying only one DLL often does not solve the actual problem. The host may be missing the entire Kodak component, or it may be loading a file from the wrong location.

Is sprof32.dll part of Windows

No. The presence of sprof32.dll in a Windows directory does not make it a Windows system component. Older installers sometimes copied application DLLs into Windows directories or other shared locations, but ownership still belonged to the application that installed them.

It is also not evidence of a Microsoft runtime. Installing Visual C++, DirectX, .NET, or a Windows feature will not normally restore Kodak’s ICC profile API.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The 32 suffix is important. This is normally a 32-bit library for a 32-bit host application, even when that application runs on 64-bit Windows 10 or Windows 11. A 64-bit substitute cannot be used in its place.

What usually caused the error

The filename alone cannot identify the exact original application. Work through these likely causes:

  1. An older application was incompletely installed or removed.
  2. A Photoshop or graphics plug-in still requests Kodak CMS files.
  3. A cleanup utility deleted the DLL or its companion files.
  4. Antivirus software quarantined the file.
  5. A plug-in folder was moved or renamed.
  6. A 32-bit application is loading an incompatible or damaged file.
  7. A legacy application was migrated to a new Windows installation without its supporting components.
  8. The application no longer works correctly with the current Windows version.

Think about what changed immediately before the message appeared. Did you uninstall Photoshop, move a plug-in, remove old printer software, run disk cleanup, restore a backup, or install an update? That event often identifies the owner faster than searching the whole drive.

Fix 1: Identify the application that is calling the DLL

Before replacing anything, find the program that is actually failing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check the error dialog

The title bar or surrounding message may name the executable. It could be an older image editor, printer utility, scanner application, Photoshop plug-in host, or graphics tool.

Write down:

  • The application name
  • The executable name, if shown
  • The folder from which it starts
  • Whether the error appears during Windows startup or only when opening one program

If the error appears only with one application, repair that application first. If it appears when Photoshop starts, temporarily suspect a third-party plug-in rather than Photoshop itself.

Disable recently added plug-ins

If the host application has a plug-in manager or safe mode:

  1. Start the application without loading optional plug-ins.
  2. Open its plug-in manager or preferences.
  3. Disable Kodak, Photo CD, color-management, or recently installed plug-ins.
  4. Restart the application normally.
  5. Re-enable plug-ins one at a time if the program now works.

If the application starts after a plug-in is disabled, the missing DLL belongs to that plug-in or to its installation package. Reinstall the complete compatible plug-in, or leave it disabled if the feature is obsolete.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not delete the plug-in immediately. Move it to a temporary backup folder outside the application directory so it can be restored if needed.

Fix 2: Repair or reinstall the parent application

This is the most reliable fix because the installer can restore sprof32.dll and its companion Kodak files together.

Repair an installed program

On Windows 11:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select Apps.
  3. Select Installed apps.
  4. Find the affected imaging, printing, or graphics application.
  5. Select the three-dot menu beside it.
  6. Choose Advanced options if available.
  7. Select Repair.
  8. Restart Windows and test the application.

On Windows 10:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select Apps.
  3. Select Apps & features.
  4. Select the affected program.
  5. Choose Advanced options, Modify, or Repair, depending on the installer.
  6. Complete the repair and restart the program.

Not every desktop application exposes a Repair button. If it does not, open Control Panel, select Programs, choose Programs and Features, right-click the application, and look for Repair or Change.

Reinstall from the original source

If repair is unavailable or does not work:

  1. Save the application’s settings, project files, and license information.
  2. Uninstall the affected application from Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
  3. Restart Windows.
  4. Reinstall the same 32-bit application or plug-in from its original installer or licensed media.
  5. Run the installer as administrator if the vendor’s instructions require it.
  6. Start the application and test the operation that previously failed.

For an old Photoshop extension, reinstall the extension rather than copying sprof32.dll into Photoshop manually. Historical Kodak installations used a group of files, and mixing files from unrelated releases can create a different loader error.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If the original installer is unavailable, contact the software vendor or the organization that supplied the workflow. Current public Kodak download pages focus on newer products and do not establish a supported standalone download for this legacy DLL.

Fix 3: Check Windows Security quarantine

Antivirus software may have removed the file, especially if the application is very old or the file was placed in an unusual directory. Quarantine does not prove that the file was malicious, but restoring it without checking its origin is unsafe.

  1. Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
  2. Select Virus & threat protection.
  3. Select Protection history.
  4. Look for an event involving sprof32.dll or the affected application.
  5. Expand the event and review the detected path and action.
  6. If the file came from a trusted, intact installer and the application vendor confirms it, use the available restore or allow option.
  7. If the path points to a temporary folder, download directory, startup folder, or unknown program, do not restore it.
  8. Reinstall the parent application from a trusted source instead.

Microsoft notes that restoring a quarantined item can allow it to be detected again. Scan the computer before restoring anything, and do not create a permanent antivirus exclusion merely to make an old program start.

After restoring a verified file, launch the original application. If the same error returns, the file may be corrupted, incomplete, or missing its companion Kodak libraries. Reinstall the whole application instead.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fix 4: Check for 32-bit and 64-bit mismatches

A 32-bit DLL must normally be loaded by a 32-bit application. Windows 11 and Windows 10 can run many 32-bit desktop applications on 64-bit systems, but that does not turn the DLL into a 64-bit library.

Check the application rather than guessing between System32 and SysWOW64:

  1. Right-click the application shortcut.
  2. Select Open file location.
  3. Inspect the application’s installation folder and executable properties.
  4. Check the vendor documentation or installer name for a 32-bit edition.
  5. Use the 32-bit installer that matches the application and plug-in.
  6. Do not replace the file with a similarly named 64-bit DLL.
  7. Do not mix Kodak files from different installers.

The Windows folder names are counterintuitive: System32 commonly contains 64-bit system files on 64-bit Windows, while SysWOW64 contains 32-bit system files. That does not mean you should manually place sprof32.dll in either directory. The application installer and its DLL search path determine the correct location.

If the error says the file is “not designed to run on Windows” or “contains an error,” suspect a damaged file, wrong architecture, or incompatible build rather than a simple missing-file problem.

Fix 5: Restore files after cleanup or migration

If the problem appeared after disk cleanup, a backup restore, or moving the application to another drive:

  1. Check the cleanup utility’s quarantine or backup area.
  2. Check the Recycle Bin.
  3. Search the original application backup or installation media for the Kodak component.
  4. Do not delete other copies of Kodak DLLs yet.
  5. Reinstall the owning application if the files cannot be restored as a complete set.

Multiple copies may exist in an application directory, a plug-in directory, or an older Windows directory. More copies do not necessarily help. An application may find an incompatible copy first, so identify which executable is loading the file before removing anything.

If the failure began immediately after installing or removing software and a restore point exists, System Restore may roll back that change. Open Control Panel, search for Recovery, select Open System Restore, choose a restore point from before the failure, and follow the prompts. System Restore affects system settings and installed software changes, not personal documents.

Fix 6: Update the affected application and its drivers

An old imaging program may depend on printer, scanner, display, or capture drivers. Driver updates will not normally replace sprof32.dll, but they can resolve a related failure if the application crashes while initializing an imaging device.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Update a device through Device Manager

  1. Right-click Start.
  2. Select Device Manager.
  3. Expand the relevant category, such as Printers, Imaging devices, Display adapters, or Universal Serial Bus controllers.
  4. Right-click the device.
  5. Select Update driver.
  6. Choose Search automatically for drivers.
  7. Install the result if Windows finds one.
  8. Restart Windows and test the application.

For the safest result, use the device manufacturer’s current Windows 10 or Windows 11 driver when one is available. Avoid installing a driver intended for a different device model or architecture.

Manually tracking down old hardware drivers can mean checking several device entries, comparing versions, and repeating the process after Windows replaces one. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers and show what needs attention; the full driver installation is available with the full version. It is optional, and reinstalling the Kodak-dependent application remains the definitive fix for this DLL.

Fix 7: Repair Windows components only if other programs are also failing

Because sprof32.dll is a third-party application library, Windows component repair is not the first-line solution. Use it when other unrelated Windows applications also fail, or when the system has broader corruption symptoms.

Run DISM

  1. Open the Start menu.
  2. Type Command Prompt.
  3. Right-click Command Prompt.
  4. Select Run as administrator.
  5. Select Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
  6. Enter:
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
  1. Wait for the operation to finish.
  2. Restart Windows.

Run System File Checker

Open an elevated Command Prompt again and enter:

sfc /scannow

Wait until verification reaches 100 percent, then restart Windows and test the original application.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC because DISM can repair the component store that SFC uses. These commands repair protected Windows files. They do not recreate a missing Kodak application file, so reinstall the parent application if the sprof32.dll error remains.

Repeating SFC and DISM without knowing what changed is usually less useful than identifying the program that requests the DLL. If you prefer help locating broader component problems, Outbyte PC Repair can scan and show reported issues; repairs are performed with the full version. It is optional, and the complete Kodak-dependent application installation is still the correct repair for this specific missing file.

Fix 8: Do not use regsvr32 for this DLL

regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that expose a registration entry point such as DllRegisterServer. It is commonly used for certain COM and ActiveX components.

There is no verified evidence that sprof32.dll is a self-registering COM or ActiveX server. It is an application library loaded by a host program, so this is not a normal fix:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
regsvr32 sprof32.dll

Running that command may produce an error such as:

The module was loaded but the entry-point DllRegisterServer was not found.

That message does not mean the DLL is missing. It means the file is not designed for that registration method. Restore it through the application installer instead.

Fix 9: Do not install runtimes or Windows Features at random

Installing Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable may help if the parent application separately requires it, but it does not turn sprof32.dll into a Microsoft runtime. Only install a Visual C++ package when the application documentation or its own installer requires it, and use Microsoft’s official package for the architecture requested by that application.

Likewise, enabling features such as .NET Framework, Legacy Components, or DirectPlay will not normally restore Kodak’s ICC profile API. Windows Features are relevant only when the affected application specifically reports that one of those components is missing.

Why random DLL downloads are risky

A standalone DLL download can fail in several ways:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • The file may be malware or modified.
  • It may be the wrong version.
  • It may be the wrong 32-bit or 64-bit build.
  • It may come from an unrelated Kodak CMS release.
  • Its companion DLLs may still be missing.
  • It may be copied into a directory the application never searches.
  • Antivirus software may quarantine it again.

Do not copy an arbitrary sprof32.dll into C:WindowsSystem32, C:WindowsSysWOW64, or the application folder. Do not delete existing copies until you know which program owns them.

The safe sources are the original application installer, licensed installation media, a verified backup, or direct support from the software vendor. If the software is obsolete and no compatible installer exists, disabling the plug-in or replacing the application may be safer than forcing an untrusted DLL into Windows.

What to do if the error remains

If repair and reinstall do not resolve the problem:

  1. Confirm the exact filename is sprof32.dll, not a similar-looking name such as spro32.dll.
  2. Note the full error text and the application that displays it.
  3. Disable every recently added plug-in.
  4. Check the application’s safe mode or plug-in manager.
  5. Review Event Viewer for the failing executable.
  6. Search the original installation media for Kodak CMS files.
  7. Check whether the application is 32-bit.
  8. Compare the application’s compatibility requirements with your Windows version.
  9. Test the program in a supported compatibility environment if the vendor documents one.
  10. Contact the application or plug-in vendor with the error text and executable name.

If the original program no longer needs its obsolete Kodak plug-in, removing or disabling that plug-in is often cleaner than restoring a legacy dependency.

Frequently asked questions

Is sprof32.dll a virus

The filename is associated with legitimate Kodak software, but a filename alone does not prove that a particular copy is safe. Inspect its location, scan it with Windows Security, and prefer a copy restored by the original application installer.

Can I download sprof32.dll by itself

You should not use a random DLL download sites site. The complete Kodak component may include companion files, and the standalone file may not match the application. Reinstall the program or plug-in that requested it.

Is sprof32.dll required by Photoshop

Some older Photoshop plug-ins and Kodak Photo CD or color-management extensions used Kodak CMS files. Photoshop itself is not automatically proof that every installation needs sprof32.dll. If Photoshop starts only after a plug-in is disabled, repair or remove that plug-in.

Should I put it in System32

No. The correct directory is determined by the application installer and DLL search path. Manually placing it in a Windows system directory can create conflicts and still leave the application without its companion files.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does regsvr32 fix sprof32.dll

Usually not. regsvr32 is for self-registering DLLs, and there is no verified evidence that this Kodak library requires COM registration.

Will Visual C++ Redistributable fix the error

Not normally. sprof32.dll is identified as a Kodak Digital Science ICC Profile API component, not a Microsoft runtime. Install Visual C++ only when the parent application independently requires it.

Does Windows 11 support this old DLL

Windows may run some 32-bit legacy applications, but compatibility depends on the complete application, plug-in, drivers, and installer. A current Windows installation does not guarantee that an obsolete Kodak workflow will work.

Why does the error mention reinstalling the application

The Windows loader cannot find or load a library requested by the application. Reinstalling the complete parent program is recommended because it restores the correct DLL set, directory structure, permissions, and related dependencies rather than replacing one file blindly.
