Dragon Age: Inquisition is a choice-driven fantasy role-playing game built around a compelling central crisis, a memorable party, and a continent-sized world to explore. Its scale is both its greatest strength and its most persistent weakness: the extra regions and activities can make Thedas feel rich, but repetitive errands can also slow the story. For players who want the main post-launch single-player story, the Game of the Year edition is the straightforward choice because it includes the base game and three major expansions.
What kind of game is Dragon Age: Inquisition?
You play as the Inquisitor, leading a party through a crisis in Thedas after a catastrophic breach unleashes demons. The conflict is not only about fighting monsters: political tensions, relationships, and decisions are central to the journey. EA’s product page presents the game as a story-driven fantasy RPG, while Steam highlights its party, exploration, combat, choices, and optional strategic view, which pauses time so you can plan. The appeal is the combination of a large setting and a cast that travels with you. You can follow the main crisis or spend time exploring regions, taking on local tasks, and developing your party. That freedom lets the world feel broad, but not every activity carries the weight of the central story.
What works—and what can wear thin?
The world and story have room to breathe
The large environments give the adventure scope, and the political conflicts and companion relationships add texture beyond the demon-fighting premise. The game’s focus on choices is a good fit for players who enjoy shaping a fantasy story rather than simply moving from one combat encounter to the next.

- Become the Inquisitor: Wield the power of the Inquisition over the course of an epic character-driven story, and lead a perilous journey of discovery through the Dragon Age.
- Bond with Legends: A cast of unique, memorable characters will develop dynamic relationships both with you and with each other.
- Discover the Dragon Age: Freely explore a diverse, visually stunning, and immersive living world.
- Change the World : Your actions and choices will shape a multitude of story outcomes along with the tangible, physical aspects of the world itself.
Exploration can turn into task-clearing
The same breadth that supports discovery also creates a risk of padding. TIME critic Matt Peckham, reviewing the game on November 11, 2014, praised its larger world-building but wrote that “there’s still too much errand-running.” That is one critic’s contemporaneous judgment, not a measured consensus, but it identifies a real trade-off for prospective players: optional activities can add context and variety, yet pursuing too many can make progress feel like a checklist.
If you mainly want the central narrative, prioritize story and companion content that interests you instead of treating every map marker as mandatory. Players who enjoy roaming, collecting, and clearing regional objectives may find more value in the extra space than those who want a consistently urgent main plot.

Which edition includes the expansions?
The Game of the Year edition is the clearest option for someone looking for the base game and its major post-launch single-player story expansions. The Steam and PlayStation listings identify these included additions:
- Jaws of Hakkon
- The Descent
- Trespasser
Check the exact platform listing and edition before purchasing; storefronts and regional availability can differ. The inclusion of these expansions is an edition fact, not a promise that every platform listing or separate copy contains them. Steam’s GOTY listing · PlayStation listing

Where can you play it, and what should you check?
EA’s original April 2014 announcement listed PlayStation 4, PlayStation 3, Xbox One, Xbox 360, and PC. Current listings in the cited storefronts include the GOTY edition on Steam for PC and on PlayStation for PS4; PlayStation says the PS4 version is playable on PS5, with a warning that some PS4 features may be absent. EA’s current game page links to several storefronts, but platform availability can vary by region and change over time. Confirm the live listing for your country and device before buying. Steam displayed a Metacritic score of 85 on the accessed listing; that is an aggregator score shown by Steam, not a current review, and scores can change. On October 8, 2026, Steam showed 75% positive from 10,991 English-language user reviews and 73% positive from 138 reviews in the previous 30 days. These are storefront snapshots, not a controlled measure of quality, and the figures may change. Steam listing
Steam and PlayStation each claim more than 130 Game of the Year awards, without specifying the counting method in the cited passage. EA’s launch announcement separately says the game won Best RPG at E3 2014 in the official Game Critics Awards. The award count is therefore best understood as a storefront claim, while the E3 award has a named category and event. Steam listing · PlayStation listing · EA launch announcement
Verdict
Dragon Age: Inquisition is a strong fit for players who want a character-led fantasy RPG with consequential choices, party dynamics, political conflict, and a broad world to explore. Its size is not an unqualified benefit: errand-heavy side content can dilute the momentum. If that trade-off sounds acceptable, the GOTY edition is the most direct route to the base adventure and its three major single-player expansions; verify the precise listing for your platform before buying.
