The short answer to the order question: work through the Inquisitor’s Path in the sequence set out below, pick one of two midgame quests, and track everything else (companion, regional, specialization, War Table and DLC content) as separate checklists you work through alongside the main chain.
Decide how much of the game you want to cover
BioWare’s official game description frames the experience around player decisions: “Explore a vast fantasy world on the brink of catastrophe in Dragon Age™: Inquisition, a next-generation action RPG in which your choices shape and drive the experience.” Because the game is built around choice, a single universal route would leave out too much. This guide is organized so you can pick a scope first.
| Scope | What it includes | Where to look in this guide |
|---|---|---|
| Main story only | The Inquisitor’s Path, including one quest from the midgame either/or pair | The main quest order |
| Main story plus companions | The main route plus Inner Circle and companion quests | The main quest order and the companion checklist |
| Broader completion | The main route plus regional quests, specializations, War Table operations and DLC quests | All checklists and the War Table section |
The main quest order
The community-maintained Dragon Age Wiki lists the Inquisitor’s Path in this sequence:

The midgame choice is one slot, not two quests
Champions of the Just and In Hushed Whispers are the two alternatives in the mage/templar decision. The wiki labels them as alternatives, so only one of them fits into a single playthrough. The wiki does not rank them, and neither does this guide.
How to decide which side to take
- First run, plot only: take the side you want to see play out. You will not reach the other in this playthrough.
- Second run: take the other side so you see the full alternate branch.
- Completion goals: the choice does not change the optional checklists below, so decide on plot grounds alone.
Optional content as separate checklists
The quest index groups optional content apart from the main chain. Track each group on its own so the main route stays easy to follow.
Inner Circle and companion quests
- Work through the companion group in the index, checking off each Inner Circle and companion quest as you finish it.
- These are listed apart from the main chain, so you can see at a glance which companion steps the main route does not include.
Regional quests
- Regional quests have their own group in the index, separate from the main plot.
- Use that group to confirm which areas you have fully covered.
Specializations
- Specialization quests are a distinct group. Check that group before committing to a build.
DLC quests
- Each DLC is listed as its own group, separate from base-game content.
- Confirm which DLC your copy includes before you plan around it. Platform and edition differences are covered in the limits section below.
War Table operations are a progression system, not world quests
War Table operations are assigned from the War Table rather than played directly in the world. According to the wiki’s description, operations can unlock locations, give rewards or influence, and advance the story. Each operation runs on a real-time timer.
| Feature | War Table operations | Quests played in the world |
|---|---|---|
| Where it happens | From the War Table | Directly in the world |
| Timing | Real-time timers, per the wiki’s description | Not stated for this guide |
| Can unlock locations | Yes | Not stated for this guide |
| Can give rewards or influence | Yes | Not stated for this guide |
| Advances the story | Yes | Yes, for main quests |
Two practical consequences follow. First, because timers are real-time, plan to start operations you need soon before you step away from the game. Second, check whether an operation is tied to a main-route step before you skip it, since operations can advance the story.

What this order does not settle
- Consequences and missable content: this route gives the order, not which side quests can be missed or what each midgame choice changes later. Read each quest’s text before accepting it.
- Platform and edition differences: not covered here. Quest names come from the community-maintained Dragon Age Wiki, so if a name in your quest log differs, follow the log.
- Step-by-step detail inside each quest: this guide ends the main chain at Doom Upon All the World and does not list every objective within each quest.
