An unfinished development build of Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2 appeared online in July 2024, about two months before its planned September 9 launch. Saber Interactive described it as an old build and asked fans to avoid it and not spoil the game. The game has since been released.
What happened in the Space Marine 2 leak?
On July 15, 2024, PC Gamer reported that a build of Space Marine 2 had appeared on a piracy site and that videos showing gameplay from it were circulating online. The report described the build as seemingly incomplete and put its size at approximately 70 GB; that figure was contemporary reporting, not an official game-size specification. The timing explains the original “two months before release” description: the report came in July, while the planned launch was September 9, 2024. Focus Entertainment’s official FAQ lists that release date.
Was the leaked build the full game?
Saber characterized it as an unfinished, old development build—not the final release. In a statement quoted by Game Developer on July 17, the studio said the build “will be almost a year old by the time we launch.” That describes its expected age at launch; it does not establish an exact compilation date.

Game Developer attributed the statement to Saber Interactive. Its report also quoted the studio asking fans to avoid the build and not spoil the game for people waiting for launch. Read Game Developer’s report
What is known about how the build got online?
The exact origin of the files and the route by which they reached the internet were not established in the cited coverage. Wargamer reported that Saber Interactive and publisher Focus Entertainment confirmed the leak in a joint statement, while noting that clues circulating at the time appeared to conflict. What did Saber Interactive ask fans to do?
In the statement quoted by Game Developer, Saber said: “We’re asking everyone to avoid this unfinished build and to not spoil the game for those excited to experience it for the first time at launch.” The studio’s appeal was to leave the unfinished version alone and avoid sharing spoilers.

Space Marine 2, a third-person shooter and direct sequel to the 2011 Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine, launched on September 9, 2024. Focus Entertainment’s launch announcement lists PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Steam, and the Epic Games Store. The publisher’s FAQ says newcomers can follow the story without having played the first game.
