Dragon Age: The Veilguard Faces “Anti-Woke” Review-Bombing Claims

November 2024 coverage documented politically charged reviews of Dragon Age: The Veilguard and differing platform snapshots—but not proof that every low rating was coordinated.

Reports published on November 5, 2024, described politically charged negative user reviews of Dragon Age: The Veilguard and sharply different review snapshots on Metacritic and Steam. That supports calling the episode a review-score controversy involving anti-woke rhetoric; it does not prove that every low rating was politically motivated or that reviewers coordinated a campaign.

What the review-bombing claim is based on

Coverage documented some user reviews using phrases such as “going woke” and “woke propaganda,” as well as complaints about “censorship.” Those are examples of rhetoric reported in the controversy, not neutral descriptions of the game or proof of every reviewer’s motive. CGMagazine and Neowin both reported on the dispute on November 5, 2024.

The distinction matters: a low score, politically framed language in some reviews, and different platform ratings can establish that a controversy exists. On their own, they cannot show how many reviews were coordinated, how many were written by people who had not played the game, or why every individual reviewer gave a low rating. The cited coverage did not establish an incident-wide study measuring any of those things.

What the November 5, 2024 score snapshots showed

CGMagazine reported these figures on November 5, 2024. They are historical snapshots from that date, not current scores; user ratings and review totals can change.

Metacritic critic reviews 84 percent from 54 reviews, as reported by CGMagazine on November 5, 2024.
Steam user reviews “Mostly Positive” with more than 13,000 reviews, as reported by CGMagazine on November 5, 2024.

Neowin also reported a separate snapshot of approximately 2,000 PS5 Metacritic user reviews and platform-specific scores on November 5, 2024. That count differs in scope from CGMagazine’s reported aggregate, so the figures should not be combined as if they described one dataset.

Why Metacritic and Steam ratings are not directly interchangeable

Neowin reported that Metacritic did not require users to own the game to submit user reviews, while Steam reviews could be set by people who purchased it. That is a difference in submission context, not proof that one platform’s score is categorically more reliable.

Submission context described by Neowin Ownership was not required to submit a user review. Reviews could be set by people who purchased the game.
What the reported snapshot indicates A user-score snapshot based on submitted ratings. A user-review sentiment label and review count for Steam.
What it cannot establish by itself Whether every low-rating author played the game, or whether all negative reviews shared a motive. Whether the review pool represents every player or whether coordinated behavior was absent.

The two platforms also report their user feedback differently: the cited November 5 coverage gives a percentage for Metacritic and Steam’s “Mostly Positive” label. A visible gap between those snapshots is context for the controversy, not independent proof of a coordinated bombing campaign.

What Metacritic said about moderation

CGMagazine quoted a Metacritic spokesperson as saying: “We take online trust and safety very seriously across all our sites, including Metacritic.” The spokesperson said the site reviews reports of abuse and removes reviews when they violate its terms, including cases involving racist, sexist, homophobic, or insulting language toward other users. The report attributed the statement to a spokesperson speaking to Eurogamer; it did not name the individual.

This describes a process for handling terms-of-use violations. It is not confirmation that Metacritic found a coordinated campaign, nor a promise to remove reviews simply because they were negative or politically motivated.

How to read the controversy fairly

  • Separate opinion from evidence of abuse. A negative assessment of the writing, gameplay, or a character is not automatically evidence of review bombing. Abusive language directed at other users is a separate moderation issue.
  • Do not assign one motive to every low score. Politically framed wording in some reviews documents rhetoric present in the dispute, but does not establish why each reviewer rated the game as they did.
  • Treat the scores as dated platform snapshots. The reported figures describe what CGMagazine and Neowin observed on November 5, 2024, not today’s standing or a representative survey of all players.
  • Keep the claim appropriately qualified. The reporting supports describing an anti-woke review-score controversy; the cited evidence does not quantify coordination or establish that every negative rating was part of a campaign.

Steam’s store listing identifies the game, but the existence of that listing does not establish availability of a physical edition or any particular retailer stock.
