Upgrade and enchant gear at the Caretaker’s Workshop in the Lighthouse. Workshop upgrades improve equipment, while finding or buying duplicates raises an item’s rarity and can unlock additional properties. Those are separate progression systems.
Where to upgrade equipment
Visit the Caretaker’s Workshop in the Lighthouse to upgrade equipment for Rook and companions or apply enchantments. The Caretaker becomes available near the beginning of the game, after the main quest “In Entropy’s Grasp.” IGN’s equipment guide covers the workshop’s role and availability.
How workshop upgrades work
Use the workshop to improve gear. As its rank increases, more enchantment choices become available, and the level of equipment you find or buy is affected by that rank. Higher upgrades call for progressively rarer materials, but a complete rank-by-rank cost list is not established here; check the workshop’s displayed requirements for the item you want to improve.
How duplicates improve rarity
Finding or buying another copy of an item raises that item’s rarity, improves its stats, and can unlock additional properties. The listed rarity tiers, from lowest to highest, are common, uncommon, rare, epic, and legendary. Some gear can already be found or purchased at a higher tier, so a duplicate is not the only way to encounter stronger rarity.

Duplicates advance rarity; they are not workshop enchantments. Before investing in a piece of gear, consider whether more copies may still be available and whether its current properties suit your build.
Enchantments: what to know
The Caretaker’s Workshop also lets you enchant gear. BioWare’s overview of combat and companions says each item or ability can have one enchantment, and a given enchantment can be assigned to only one item or ability at a time. Workshop rank unlocks more choices. Consider which gear and abilities matter most to your build before assigning an effect.

What about unique equipment?
Unique items do not follow the ordinary rarity-upgrade path. They can still be enchanted at the workshop, so assess them based on their existing properties and how an available enchantment supports your build.

A quick way to decide what to invest in
- Check rarity and duplicates: If you expect to find or buy another copy, that may improve the item’s rarity and properties.
- Check the item’s fit: Favor gear whose current properties support how Rook or a companion plays.
- Check workshop rank: Rank affects found or purchased gear levels and the enchantments available.
- Check whether it is unique: Unique gear can be enchanted, but does not use ordinary rarity progression.
