The first Dragon Age: The Veilguard preview arrived on June 11, 2024, with a 15-plus-minute opening look from BioWare and a separate nearly one-hour demo report from Xbox Wire. Together, they introduced customizable protagonist Rook, companion relationships, tactical pause-and-command combat, and an opening set in Minrathous. Those were preview-era glimpses, not a review of the finished game; EA confirmed the full release for October 31, 2024.
What was the first Dragon Age: The Veilguard preview?
BioWare’s June 11, 2024 introduction presented a video of the game’s opening moments, running more than 15 minutes. In a separate report published the same day, Xbox Wire’s Jeff Rubenstein described a nearly one-hour demo led by Creative Director John Epler. These were different formats: BioWare’s official opening look and Rubenstein’s account of a guided preview session.
The reveal framed The Veilguard as a character-driven role-playing game in Thedas. Its early emphasis was on building Rook, forming relationships with companions, and confronting Solas. BioWare said companions would be romanceable, while Rubenstein reported seeing the opening quest unfold in Minrathous.
What could players customize?
BioWare said the character creator would let players choose Rook’s class, lineage, gender, appearance, and faction. Choosing a faction was presented as more than a cosmetic decision: BioWare said it would unlock different narrative, dialogue, and gameplay interactions.

In his account of the demo, Rubenstein described selecting a race, customizing Rook’s appearance, choosing a class and specialization, and starting as a Human Rogue in the Shadow Dragons faction. That specific character was his preview-session choice, not a required setup for the game.
How did the preview describe combat?
BioWare announced three classes—Warrior, Mage, and Rogue—and described combat as combining moment-to-moment action with tactical decision-making. The central tool shown for that tactical layer was a customizable ability wheel: opening it pauses the action so players can issue companion commands, activate abilities, and set up combos. BioWare also said some abilities could be assigned to shortcuts.

What was shown in the opening setting?
BioWare’s reveal named several regions players would visit: Rivain, Weisshaupt, Arlathan, Minrathous, and the Deep Roads. Rubenstein reported that the opening quest took place in Minrathous and involved an early confrontation with Solas. The broader location list was an announcement about the game’s world, while the Minrathous sequence was a detail from the reported demo.

What became clearer by the October 2024 launch?
EA confirmed that Dragon Age: The Veilguard launched on October 31, 2024, as a single-player RPG for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. Its launch announcement described seven companions, with players choosing two to accompany Rook on quests. It also reiterated the three classes and team combos, and described using the ability wheel to direct allies to fight, heal, or stay out of combat.
EA’s October 31 launch guide clarified how progression and exploration fit together. Players can change Rook’s and companions’ abilities outside combat, and respec individual skill nodes or an entire skill tree. Exploration expands after the prologue, with new areas opening over the first several quests. EA also encouraged side quests and companion quests, saying they affect later stages of the game.

What did EA say about console performance?
EA’s October 2024 specifications article said console Fidelity and Performance modes target 30 and 60 FPS, respectively. EA also said the PS5 Pro improves both modes and enables ray-traced ambient occlusion in Performance mode. These are EA-published specifications, not measurements from independent testing here.
In the same article, BioWare Studio Technical Director Maciej Kurowski said: “The team at BioWare is proud of how immersed players will be when they enter the beautiful world of Thedas, with upgraded image quality thanks to Sony’s new AI-based upscaler, PSSR.” This is EA’s quoted statement about PS5 Pro image quality, not an independent performance finding.
