The Heart of Corruption is a multi-region Crossroads quest: defeat three Champions to obtain Champion Essences, use them to open three gates and defeat the Revenants inside, then return with their Revenant Essences to challenge the Revenant Dragon behind the thrice-locked door. The three gate routes can be completed in any order; the quest does not require a specific sequence.
Where to start and how the quest is gated
Look for the thrice-locked door on Beacon Island in the Crossroads, just to the right after entering from the Lighthouse eluvian. GameSpot says spotting it adds The Heart of Corruption to your journal. PowerPyx describes the quest as unlocking through a gate in Elvhenan’s Haven after defeating Champions. These accounts describe different points in the progression: you may discover the main door or quest before you can open all of its component gates.
Track the quest in your journal to reveal map markers for the Revenants. Each route requires defeating a regional Champion for a Champion Essence, using that essence to open a Crossroads gate, and defeating the Revenant inside for one of the three Revenant Essences needed at the final door. GameSpot identifies the Champions as Desmal in Treviso, Entarus in Arlathan Forest, and Amarell in Hossberg Wetlands. The routes below are not presented as a mandatory order.
Gate of Deep Sorrows: Treviso and Betrayal of Felassan
Defeat Desmal, Bloodbound to Elgar’nan
In Treviso, look on rooftops a short distance from the Antivan Crows headquarters. Desmal is a level 25 Darkspawn Champion. Clear nearby Darkspawn and destroy the blight boil to make Desmal appear. Defeating the Champion gives you a Champion Essence.

Open the gate and defeat the Revenant
Use the essence at the one-seal doorway in the Converged City area of the Crossroads to enter Betrayal of Felassan. GameSpot describes this level 32 boss as summoning additional enemies and raising a protective barrier that is vulnerable to ranged attacks. Defeat it to claim a Revenant Essence.
The nearby reward is The Burden amulet. GameSpot describes it as granting 20% damage at low health, causing the low-health state to begin earlier, and capping health at 70%.
Gate of Parched Hopes: Arlathan Forest and the Slaughter of the Pillars
Release Entarus the Rekindled
Go to the Tainted Woods in northeastern Arlathan Forest. Clear the fortress and blight pods, then destroy the larger pod to release Entarus the Rekindled. Defeat the Champion and take its Champion Essence.

Open the gate and defeat the Revenant
In Elvhenan’s Haven, use the essence orb to open the Gate of Parched Hopes. The Slaughter of the Pillars summons undead minions and creates a barrier that GameSpot says is vulnerable to ranged attacks. Defeat the Revenant to obtain another Revenant Essence.
The chest contains Andraste’s Will, a ring that adds 50% burning duration, grants one additional maximum burning stack, and makes all afflictions you apply count as burning, according to GameSpot.
Gate of Pale Reflections: Hossberg Wetlands and the Fall of the Protector
Defeat Amarell the Unwoven
Find Amarell the Unwoven in a blight blob in Hossberg Wetlands. Defeat the Champion to get its Champion Essence.
Reach the gate and defeat the Revenant
At the Heights of Athim, cross the snowy pass and clear the blight pods and blob to unseal the Gate of Pale Reflections. The Fall of the Protector first summons a horde; after you deal with it, the boss uses ice-based spells and can create a barrier that GameSpot says needs ranged attacks to break.
GameSpot reported that the boss failed to appear during its playthrough. If that happens, leave the chamber and check for a blight pod outside that may have respawned; this is a source-reported troubleshooting possibility, not confirmation of a current or universal bug.
The nearby reward is the Casket Sharp greataxe. GameSpot lists 618 physical damage and 438 stagger, says its light attacks count as heavy attacks, and notes that defeating an enemy builds stagger on nearby hostiles.

Finale: open the Beacon Island door and defeat the Revenant Dragon
- Return to Beacon Island. Go back to the thrice-locked door near the Lighthouse eluvian.
- Place the three Revenant Essences. These come from the Revenants behind the three Crossroads gates.
- Enter the arena and fight the Revenant Dragon. GameSpot describes it as a high-health, high-defense opponent with familiar High Dragon attack patterns. Its element shifts from ice to fire to electric, and it can blind the party, preventing companions from assisting.
Mythal’s help is optional context, not a requirement for opening the door. PowerPyx advises gaining her favor through Regrets of the Dread Wolf. GameSpot reports that, in its playthrough, a successful peaceful outcome there allowed Mythal’s dragon form to blast the Revenant Dragon, remove roughly one-fourth of its health, and stagger it so its chest weak point was exposed. That is the guide author’s reported outcome, not a guaranteed result for every playthrough.
Final-room loot and quest reward reports
GameSpot lists The Last Resort ring, a memento worth +300 Caretaker Power, and the third Mysterious Circle in a nook behind the arena. The Last Resort grants +20% damage and -20% resistance after an ability hits an enemy; defending or dodging resets the bonus. This is a high-risk damage effect: the resistance penalty is part of the trade-off.
Game8’s quest overview lists Dragon’s Tear Memento, Dragonfire Catalyst, Etheric Remnant, Dragon Scales, and faction strength. The overview and GameSpot’s final-room list summarize rewards differently and may cover different reward scopes, so they should not be treated as one definitive combined loot list.
