Shadow of the Erdtree is much smaller than the full Elden Ring map, but it is not a small add-on: post-release estimates place its playable area at roughly two base-game regions, or somewhere between one-third and one-half of the Lands Between. Those are editorial comparisons, not official measurements. The expansion takes place in a separate, densely layered world called the Realm of Shadow.
How large is the Shadow of the Erdtree map?
The best available comparisons put the Realm of Shadow at about two regions from the base game and roughly one-third to one-half of the Lands Between’s playable footprint. The range reflects different editorial methods: one comparison uses familiar regions as a yardstick, while another visually compares the in-game maps. Neither is a standardized measurement by FromSoftware.
Dot Esports writer Tom Foley, after reporting around 50 hours of exploration in the Land of Shadow, describes it as about as large as two base-game regions, using Limgrave and Caelid as an intuitive comparison. The same article estimates the Lands Between at around 30 square miles and derives roughly 10 square miles for the expansion. Those square-mile figures are that outlet’s estimates, not publisher measurements. Dot Esports’ comparison
PC Gamer’s side-by-side reading of the in-game maps puts the expansion between one-third and one-half the size of the base game’s playable zone. This, too, is an editorial visual estimate rather than a formal survey. PC Gamer’s map comparison

Why did the pre-release estimate sound smaller?
Before the expansion launched, FromSoftware president Hidetaka Miyazaki said it was “probably comparable, if not larger than the area of Limgrave from the base game,” as quoted by PC Gamer. That was a qualified expectation about one base-game region, not a measured promise about the expansion’s final area. Post-release comparisons use the playable map and suggest a larger overall footprint than Limgrave alone. PC Gamer’s report and comparison
Why can the Realm of Shadow feel bigger than its footprint?
A flat map comparison misses much of the expansion’s complexity. The Realm of Shadow is vertical and layered: cliffs can separate places that look close together, routes may double back, and a visible destination can require a long detour to reach. Dot Esports describes its substantial verticality, while PC Gamer notes the difficult-to-read relationship between the map and playable space.

The official product description captures the world’s structure rather than its area: Bandai Namco and FromSoftware say that “the fields and dungeons seamlessly intervene” in the Realm of Shadow. In practical terms, that means the map’s footprint alone does not describe how much ground players must cover or how its paths connect. Bandai Namco and FromSoftware’s official announcement
What counts as a fair map comparison?
- Playable footprint versus illustrated map: A map graphic can include areas or boundaries that do not translate directly into traversable ground.
- Horizontal area versus layered space: Underground areas, elevation changes, and cliffs affect exploration without necessarily increasing a flat map’s apparent area.
- One region versus several: Limgrave is a useful reference point, but comparisons to two regions describe a broader scale than Miyazaki’s pre-release Limgrave comparison.
- Estimate versus official figure: The one-third-to-one-half range and two-region comparison come from editorial map readings; no official, standardized square-kilometer measurement for both playable maps is established by these sources.
Is the Realm of Shadow part of the Lands Between map?
No. The expansion adds a separate setting, the Realm of Shadow, rather than extending the Lands Between map. The publisher’s product information identifies it as the setting for the expansion’s adventure. The base game is required, and players must progress through it to a certain extent before they can begin the expansion. Official product information
