It launched worldwide on October 31, 2024, so this is a current overview of its structure and systems—not a pre-release preview.
What kind of game is Dragon Age: The Veilguard?
The Veilguard is a single-player RPG built around a player-created hero, Rook, and a team of seven companions. Its story follows Rook and those companions through Thedas, with companion relationships and personal storylines forming a major part of the experience. The game does not offer a multiplayer mode.
At character creation, players choose Rook’s class, lineage, gender, appearance and faction. Faction is more than a cosmetic label: the Dragon Age Community Team wrote that choosing a faction “will unlock different narrative, dialogue, and gameplay interactions” in BioWare’s Journal #1, published June 11, 2024.
How does combat work?
Combat combines direct action with commands to companions. Rook can attack, parry and dodge, while an ability wheel lets the player pause the action, direct followers, activate abilities and set up combinations. The emphasis is on controlling Rook in battle while choosing when and how the party contributes.

Warrior
Warriors use class-specific weapons and abilities suited to a more direct fighting style. Each class also has advanced specializations, giving players further ways to shape their approach.
Mage

Rogue
Rogues likewise have distinct weapons and abilities, plus advanced specializations. The choice of class changes Rook’s combat options; it does not remove the companion-command system.
Who are the companions, and why do their stories matter?
The party includes seven companions, each with an individual story and role. Players decide which companions to bring into battle, and their relationships with Rook develop through the game. The official PlayStation game description says choices affect companion development and may unlock abilities. EA’s pre-play guide also advises completing companion quests and side content, which can affect later stages of the story.

That makes companion quests relevant both to character stories and to how the campaign unfolds. If you want to see more of each companion’s arc, treat their quests as meaningful parts of the main experience rather than assuming they are disposable extras.
What platforms is Dragon Age: The Veilguard on?
The game launched worldwide on October 31, 2024, for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC. EA listed PC availability through Steam, the EA app and the Epic Games Store in its release announcement.

Choose among those versions based on the hardware and store you use. Edition content is a separate consideration: EA described Deluxe-edition bonuses as cosmetic, not additional story campaigns or gameplay systems. Store pricing and promotions change, so check the relevant storefront for current prices and availability.

EA’s PC features article lists keyboard-and-mouse and controller support, including the ability to switch input methods during play or in menus. It also reports native PS5 DualSense support with haptics, class-specific keybinds, 21:9 ultrawide support, a field-of-view slider, uncapped frame rate and Steam Deck Verified status with Steam Cloud Save.

Those are feature and compatibility details, not a guarantee of a particular frame rate or performance on every PC. Patch versions, hardware and settings affect present-day behavior; consult current platform information if performance is your deciding factor.
EA also reported that PC accounted for 40% of the platform testing effort, alongside more than 200,000 hours of performance and compatibility testing and close to 10,000 hours of user research testing. These are BioWare’s development figures, not independent measurements of the finished game’s quality or a promise about an individual setup.
Standard or Deluxe: what is the difference?
EA’s launch announcement describes Deluxe-edition bonuses as cosmetic. The available official description does not establish additional missions or gameplay advantages for Deluxe, so compare editions based on whether the listed cosmetics matter to you and verify the exact contents in your chosen store.
