To defend in DRAGON BALL: Sparking! ZERO, begin by guarding with R1/RB, then add quick evasion and Perception when you can read an attack. Save Revenge Counter for dangerous pressure and practice Super Counter as a precise interruption, not a guaranteed escape. These are the standard PlayStation/Xbox labels in Bandai Namco’s guide; check the in-game controls if your platform or control scheme differs.
How do you defend in Sparking! ZERO?
Use the least costly response that fits the situation: guard against pressure you can contain, evade an attack you can time, and choose a counter when you can predict or interrupt the opponent. Every option has a weakness—direction, timing, resource cost, or vulnerability after the move—so repeatedly pressing a counter button is not a reliable defense plan.

Start with guard and directional awareness
Hold R1/RB to guard. The official guide also documents combining guard with up or down to orient defense against attacks aimed high or low. Directional guard can be disadvantageous against some moves, however, and guarding can be broken; do not hold it indefinitely without watching the opponent’s pressure pattern. Bandai Namco’s defensive mechanics guide lists these standard inputs and cautions.

Evade attacks you can read
Tap R1/RB just before certain attacks to perform a quick evasion and create an opportunity to counter. The guide does not give a frame window, so treat this as a timing skill rather than a fixed number of frames. Practice recognizing the attack and pressing at the last moment instead of evading on prediction alone.

When should you use Perception, Revenge Counter, or Super Counter?
These options answer different problems. Perception rewards a read, Revenge Counter is an emergency response that spends Skill Stock, and Super Counter can interrupt many attacks but demands unusually precise timing. Their availability and costs have also changed in updates, so the current in-game rules take priority over older guides.
Perception: counter a read, not every attack
Hold Circle/B for Super Perception according to the official guide. Used at the last moment against a Rush Attack, it triggers Sonic Sway; some Blast counters can cost two Skill Stocks. The May 26, 2026 update says Perception cannot be used during guard stun, raises its activation Ki cost, and increases Skill Stock requirements from one to two for Smash Attacks and Rush Chain. It also lengthens the follow-up input window after a successful Perception and allows follow-up attacks to be charged by holding the button. Bandai Namco’s May 26, 2026 update notice describes these changes.

Perception is most useful when you have identified the incoming attack and can afford the relevant cost. The January 20, 2025 update added activation Ki costs for Perception and Super Perception and increased the delay before another action after they finish. January 2026 notes say Super Perception recovers more Ki when deflecting a Blast. Those are dated update details, not a promise that older timing or cost advice still applies to every current situation. See the January 20, 2025 update and January 2026 patch notes.
Revenge Counter: spend Skill Stock to escape pressure
Press R3/R (the standard guide’s PlayStation/Xbox labels) to use Revenge Counter while under attack. It costs Skill Stock, and you need to account for the direction of the incoming attack. The May 26, 2026 update specifically enabled Revenge Counter when hit from the front by stun-type Smash Ki Blasts; that interaction should not be generalized to every hit state or attack direction. The update notice identifies the change.

Super Counter: broad coverage, strict timing
Press up + Square/X to attempt a Super Counter. Bandai Namco’s guide describes it as effective against nearly all attacks, including while being hit and against attacks from behind, but stresses that the timing must be extremely precise. A failed attempt now has a longer interval before another Super Counter input under the January 20, 2025 changes. January 2026 notes also disable certain counter actions during Ki depletion, so do not assume every counter remains available in that state. The mechanics guide, January 2025 update notes, and January 2026 patch notes document the respective mechanics and changes.

Choose a recovery direction before you hit a wall or the ground. Press down before impact for ground or wall recovery; press up before impact for a Dragon Dash recovery that returns toward the opponent. The recovery input and timing are listed in Bandai Namco’s mechanics guide. Choose based on where you need to end up rather than treating either recovery as a universal reset.

How do Z-Counters work?
When a Vanishing Assault is about to connect, press R1/RB to attempt a Z-Counter. The official guide describes the resulting exchange as continuing until one player mistimes the counter, with the winning counter’s damage increasing as the exchange continues. It is therefore a timing contest, not a one-button defense that guarantees you win the exchange. The input and description appear in the official mechanics guide.

- Guard without overcommitting. Hold R1/RB and use up or down only when the attack’s height calls for it. Learn when the opponent’s pressure can break guard.
- Build a timing read. In practice, work on tapping R1/RB just before an attack for quick evasion. Avoid relying on an assumed frame count; the official guide does not specify one.
- Add Perception selectively. Try holding Circle/B against a readable Rush Attack, then account for the current Ki or Skill Stock cost and the possibility that guard stun prevents its use.
- Keep Revenge Counter for danger. Use it as a costly response while under attack, while tracking the attack’s direction and your Skill Stock.
- Drill Super Counter separately. Practice up + Square/X for precise interruption timing, and remember that failure and Ki-depletion rules can limit follow-up attempts.
- Recover before impact. Choose down for ground/wall recovery or up for Dragon Dash recovery before you hit.
Controls and balance are patch-sensitive. The official mechanics page uses standard PS/Xbox labels; check the current in-game control display for other schemes or platforms. The dated official update notes linked above describe particular changes rather than establishing that their listed version is the current build.
