To reach Gohan Black in Dragon Ball: Sparking! ZERO, play Gohan’s Episode Battle through Chapter 5 and complete the alternate objective in “Defend Earth from the Frieza Force.” Defeat the Frieza Force Soldier quickly, then overwhelm Frieza until he acknowledges Gohan. This opens The Strongest Warrior route. Gohan Black appears in that story, but is not a standard roster character or costume unlock.
How to unlock Gohan Black’s story route
- Choose Gohan’s Episode Battle. Progress to Chapter 5, in the Super Saga portion of his story. Episode Battle retells Dragon Ball scenarios from eight character perspectives, and outcomes can change the course of a scenario, according to Bandai Namco Europe’s Game Modes Handbook.
- Start “Defend Earth from the Frieza Force.” The alternate objective is to defeat the Frieza Force Soldier and then pressure Frieza.
- Finish the fight quickly. Attack Frieza until he acknowledges Gohan; that visible response is the reported sign that the branch has triggered. Destructoid’s guide author reported clearing the objective in 1 minute 26 seconds, but the official handbook does not publish a fixed timer or damage threshold. Treat that time as one successful run, not a guaranteed cutoff.
- Continue The Strongest Warrior. Follow the subsequent battles to see Gohan take the lead in an alternate Future Trunks storyline, including encounters with Gohan Black and Fused Zamasu. Insider Gaming reports a reward of 100,000 Zeni, XP, and other items for completing the storyline.
If the alternate objective does not trigger
Retry the fight with a faster approach. Kotaku recommends charging Ki to enter Sparking! Mode, chaining rush attacks, and using an Ultimate Blast to put pressure on Frieza. Its guide also reports that lowering the difficulty prevents alternate-objective completion. A Dragon Orb is described there as an optional workaround, not as an official trigger requirement. The exact internal condition is not stated in Bandai Namco’s handbook.
Can you unlock Gohan Black as a playable character?
No, not through ordinary game progression. The guides cited here describe Gohan Black as an opponent in Gohan’s alternate story, not as a selectable standard fighter or costume. Reaching the route unlocks story content, not the character for normal roster battles. Bandai Namco’s July 29, 2026 update notice lists version 3020.019.003.012.013 for PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC, but does not mention a Gohan Black roster change: read the update notice.
Unofficial PC mod option
A Nexus Mods listing called “Unlock 16 Hidden Story Characters” includes Gohan Black and describes adding data to make hidden story characters playable. Its instructions require placing files in the game’s ~mods folder and installing a signature bypass. This is an unofficial community modification, not an in-game unlock; the mod author warns against using mods online because of ban risk. Availability, compatibility, and enforcement can change, so it is not a guaranteed or endorsed route.
