Dragon Ball Xenoverse 2 is worth considering if you want to create a custom fighter, revisit familiar Dragon Ball stories, and play through a wide range of missions. Reviews tend to praise its combat, character customization, and substantial content, while noting repetition, story padding, camera problems, and long loading. It is a better fit for fans who enjoy building an avatar and working through lots of franchise content than for players seeking a tightly paced story or a purely competitive fighter.

What kind of game is Dragon Ball Xenoverse 2?

This is an avatar-driven action and fighting game. You make an original character, explore Conton City, train with recognizable series characters, and take part in missions that involve rescuing the flow of Dragon Ball history. Appearance, abilities, and moveset are customizable, making your own fighter a central part of the experience. The Steam store description lays out that premise.

That structure gives the game two main draws: fighting with a custom character and spending time in a broad Dragon Ball setting. The trade-off in review excerpts is that the amount of content does not always mean every mission feels fresh or necessary.

What do the reviews say?

When retrieved on October 8, 2026, Metacritic listed a 72/100 Metascore from 57 critic reviews and a 7.5/10 user score from 545 ratings. Those figures suggest a mixed-to-positive reception, not a guarantee that the game will suit every player; review totals and scores can change.

Individual critic excerpts show why the response is qualified. Push Square (80, October 25, 2016) highlighted the volume of offline and online content, combat improvements, and avatar customization. Multiplayer.it (82, October 27, 2016) praised the combat and Conton City hub but noted camera issues. Game Rant (80) praised the roster and character creation while pointing to long load times and story padding. GamingTrend (65, January 1, 2017) warned that the gameplay could feel stale. These are reviewers’ assessments of the game, not findings from a new performance test. The excerpts are collected on Metacritic’s critic reviews page.

What are the main strengths and drawbacks?

Why fans may enjoy it

  • Character creation: You can make a fighter of your own and tailor their abilities and moveset.
  • Combat and franchise content: Reviewers praised the fighting and the amount of Dragon Ball material, missions, and characters to engage with.
  • Online and offline options: The game offers more than a single story route, including advertised online PvP, online co-op, and Raid Battles on its Steam listing.

What may wear thin

  • Repetition and padding: Some critics found the gameplay stale or the story and side content padded. A large mission count is not the same as consistently varied missions.
  • Camera and loading concerns: Camera issues and long loading times were among the complaints in review excerpts. They reflect criticism from the original release period, not a current platform-by-platform technical test.
  • A substantial DLC catalog: There is a lot of optional add-on content to sort through. That can make edition comparisons confusing, but the available evidence does not establish that DLC is required to enjoy the base game.

Which platforms can you play it on?

Bandai Namco lists PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and Steam among the supported platforms. Its release document gives November 2, 2016 for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Steam, and September 7, 2017 for Switch. See the publisher’s platform and release information. These are historical release details, not confirmation that every version is currently available in every region or format.

Which edition should you buy?

Start with the platform you own, then compare the exact contents and current price shown by that platform’s store. On the Steam page observed October 8, 2026, the listed options included the base game, Deluxe Edition, and Special Edition. The stated contents were:

Steam edition Listed contents
Base game Dragon Ball Xenoverse 2
Deluxe Edition Base game plus Super Pass
Special Edition Base game, Super Pass, and HERO OF JUSTICE Pack Set

Edition names and contents can differ by storefront or change over time, so use the current Steam English listing or the relevant console store to confirm what is included before checkout. The Steam page showed 31 DLC listings at retrieval, but that count is a storefront snapshot rather than a permanent total.

Dragon Ball: Xenoverse 2 (Multi-Language)
  • It’s your story with custom avatar creation
  • Battle Against Foes Across Eras of DRAGON BALL
  • Play Online with other Time Patrollers
  • Upgraded with Improved Graphics

On Steam’s English U.S. store page, the base game was displayed for $4.99, reduced from $19.99, with the offer ending October 8, 2026. That was a time-limited regional price observation, not a current or universal price. Compare the live price in your region rather than treating the sale as a baseline.

How should you decide if it is worth buying?

It is most likely to appeal if you want a custom Dragon Ball fighter, enjoy combat and familiar characters, and are happy to work through a substantial mix of missions and online modes. Reviews offer less reassurance if you need consistently varied missions, a brisk story, or reliable current matchmaking performance: the cited criticism includes repetition and pacing issues, and the available storefront information verifies advertised online modes, not present-day player activity, server quality, or cross-platform play.

DRAGON BALL: Sparking! ZERO PS5
  • Engage in heart-pounding, high-speed 3D battles that stay true to the anime and video game series
  • This game contains breathtaking visuals and authentic combat moves like beam clashes, rush attacks, and movements too quick for the eyes to see
  • Step into an arena that reacts to your every action including planet-razing ultimate attacks
  • Watch the environment respond with stunning realism, and leave a trail of destruction in your wake as you battle to your heart’s content

Before buying, check these points:

  • Does the version on your platform include the edition content you actually want?
  • Are you mainly interested in the base game, or do you specifically want the additional content in a pass or pack?
  • Does the current price make sense for how much you expect to play, without assuming that you need every DLC listing?
  • If online play matters, look for current platform-specific information about service and matchmaking; an advertised mode alone does not establish how active it is today.

Does it still make sense for a new player in 2026?

The 2016 release has a substantial add-on catalog and multiple platform versions, so it is best approached as an established game with lots to explore rather than as a newly launched title. The evidence here supports its core appeal—customization, combat, and breadth—but does not establish current technical performance, matchmaking health, or a single best-value edition across platforms. Choose based on the version and contents available to you today, and the parts of the game you actually want to play.
