To get the Ultimate Key, take the Bottomless Pot from Edina Castle’s basement, sail to the shoals north of the map, and use the Pot to reveal the Shallows Shrine. The key is in a chest inside the shrine.
Get the Bottomless Pot in Edina Castle
- Go to Edina Castle and use a Fading Jenny to get past the guard.
- Reach the basement and solve its puzzle.
- Take the Bottomless Pot.
Reveal the Shallows Shrine
- Use your ship to sail north to the shoals. A route described by Game8 reaches them from Mur.
- Use the Bottomless Pot at the shoals. It raises the Shallows Shrine so you can enter it.
Collect the Ultimate Key
Enter the Shallows Shrine and open the chest to collect the Ultimate Key. Game8’s Ultimate Key guide covers the Pot, shrine, and chest route.

What to do with the key
The Ultimate Key opens all locks. Return to places you visited earlier and check locked grey doors and jail doors for areas and treasure you could not reach before. Game8’s 100% walkthrough notes this backtracking opportunity; Dragon Quest Wiki’s item entry also describes the key as opening every door.
Platforms and update context
Square Enix announced Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake for Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC through Windows and Steam. Its May 23, 2025 update notice listed console version 1.1.0.0 and Steam/Microsoft Store Windows version 1.2.0.0, and said boat and Ramia travel speed had been increased. Those are the versions recorded in that notice, not a statement of the latest version today.
