TechRadar’s review of the Nintendo Switch 2 edition describes a substantial two-game remake, but the best fit depends on whether you want the original’s solo journey, the sequel’s party adventure, or both. You do not need to play Dragon Quest III first; the Switch edition also works on Switch 2, though it keeps Switch-level graphical settings.
Is Dragon Quest I & II HD-2D Remake worth playing?
It is an appealing choice for players who want two classic, connected RPGs in one package, particularly if they are curious about how the series moved from a focused solo adventure to a broader party-based quest. Square Enix describes this release as a full remake, not just a visual refresh: it adds areas, scenarios, dungeons, encounters, foes and battle changes to both games. The two journeys still have different shapes, so the package offers contrast rather than two interchangeable campaigns.
TechRadar reviewed the Nintendo Switch 2 version and reported playing for more than 40 hours. The outlet praised the revamped visuals, voice acting, new content and usability improvements, and framed the first game as focused and the second as more expansive. Those are TechRadar’s review impressions, not a claim of independent testing here. The available evidence does not establish comparative performance across platforms, so there is no basis to declare one edition faster or smoother.
How are Dragon Quest I and II different?
Dragon Quest I: a solo adventure
The first game centers on a lone hero, giving its journey a more concentrated feel. Its smaller scale is part of the contrast with the sequel: progression is not built around managing a full party, and the adventure keeps its attention on one protagonist’s path.

Dragon Quest II: a party and a wider journey
The sequel expands the scope with a party-based adventure. In this remake, the Princess of Cannock joins the party, and an explorable undersea region gives the world another dimension. The shift from a solo hero to a group is the clearest reason to play the games together: you can see the series widen its storytelling and adventure design from one entry to the next.
What is new in the remake?
Square Enix confirms that the remake adds new scenarios, areas, dungeons, encounters and enemies, alongside sigils and scrolls and enhanced battles. In Dragon Quest II, the Princess of Cannock becomes a playable party member and the undersea region can be explored. The official feature information establishes what has been added; the quality of each addition is best treated as a review judgment rather than a guaranteed improvement for every player.
TechRadar’s Switch 2 review specifically notes voice acting, refreshed presentation and usability changes among the package’s upgrades. As with its broader assessment, those observations belong to that outlet’s review and should not be read as a platform-by-platform comparison.

- DRAGON QUEST I & II HD-2D Remake is a stunning reimagination of two legendary RPGs continuing the ‘Erdrick Trilogy’, brought together in one package.
Do you need to play Dragon Quest III first?
No. Producer Masaaki Hayasaka told Square Enix’s Duncan Heaney that the three games tell standalone stories and can be enjoyed without playing Dragon Quest III. He recommends playing the remakes in chronological order—III, then I, then II—for added context and surprises. So, start with I & II if these are the games you want; choose III first if you prefer to follow that chronology.

| Edition | Where it runs | Graphics and content |
|---|---|---|
| Nintendo Switch 2 edition | Switch 2 only | Different graphical specifications from the Switch edition. Square Enix says story and obtainable content are shared between editions. |
| Nintendo Switch edition | Nintendo Switch and Switch 2 | On Switch 2, it retains Switch-level settings. Story and obtainable content are shared with the Switch 2 edition. |
These compatibility and content distinctions come from Square Enix’s product FAQ, last updated July 31, 2025. If you own a Switch 2 and want its edition’s graphical specifications, choose the Switch 2 release. If you buy the Switch edition, it remains playable on either console, but running it on Switch 2 does not upgrade it to Switch 2 settings.
The game is a single-player RPG. Square Enix lists releases for Nintendo Switch 2, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Steam and Xbox on PC. Its worldwide launch date was October 30, 2025; the Steam release followed on October 31, 2025.

What changed in the March 2026 update?
Square Enix’s update notice dated March 9, 2026 lists version 1.0.2.0. The listed changes include faster ship movement in Dragon Quest II and adjustments to level-up attributes in Dragon Quest I on two difficulty settings. This describes that dated notice only; it does not establish whether a later update has since been released.
Who should buy it?
- Play it if you want two classic RPG adventures together, value the contrast between a solo hero and a full party, or want to experience the Erdrick stories in one package.
- Consider starting elsewhere if you are committed to chronological order; Hayasaka’s suggested sequence begins with Dragon Quest III.
- Choose the platform edition carefully if you own a Switch 2: the Switch version is compatible, but it does not use Switch 2 graphical settings.
Overall, the remake’s strongest case is the pairing itself: the first game’s compact solo focus gives way to the second’s larger party adventure, with new material and quality-of-life updates around both. TechRadar’s review supports the package as a substantial remake, while buyers should base their platform choice on Square Enix’s compatibility distinction rather than assume the Switch edition becomes the Switch 2 edition when played on newer hardware.
