A reliable first party in Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake is the Hero plus three companions who cover different needs: damage, healing and utility. A familiar starting lineup is Warrior, Priest and Mage; if you want the remake’s new vocation in your group, consider Monster Wrangler as a flexible option. Neither lineup is a required “best” party. Pick roles that suit how you want to play, and remember that supporting characters can change vocations later.
What’s a good starting party in Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake?
You can have up to four active characters: the Hero and three companions. Nintendo describes choosing three allies, and Square Enix’s lead producer places party creation at Patty’s Party Planning Place near the start of the adventure. That early choice matters because vocations shape what characters can learn, how their attributes grow and which equipment they can use.

For a first playthrough, think in terms of coverage rather than a tier list. Ask three questions: who will handle routine attacks, who will restore the party, and who will provide useful support or a different kind of flexibility? A Warrior, Priest and Mage is a conventional balanced example. Another sound approach is to select one physical attacker, a dedicated healer and a utility vocation. The best fit depends on your preference and how challenging you want the adventure to feel.
| Starting approach | Companions to consider | Why choose it |
|---|---|---|
| Familiar balanced lineup | Warrior, Priest, Mage | A conservative example that includes an attacker, a healer and a spell-focused companion. |
| Role-first lineup | One attacker, one healer, one utility vocation | Lets you choose among the available vocations while making sure the party covers different jobs. |
| Include the remake’s new vocation | Monster Wrangler alongside your chosen attacker and healer | Monster Wrangler can contribute monster-derived attacks and healing, adding flexibility to the group. |
These are starting frameworks, not official rankings. The available guidance does not establish one composition as strongest for every player or challenge. Treat the examples as a way to make a sensible first choice, not a test you have to pass before beginning.

It can help to distinguish a balanced party from a specialized one. The Warrior, Priest and Mage example spreads the companions across physical offense, dedicated healing and spell-focused support. The role-first approach is less prescriptive: you can choose among several attackers and utility vocations while still leaving room for healing. If you want Monster Wrangler, remember that it can contribute both attacks and healing, but you may still prefer a Priest or Sage for a dedicated healer role. The point is to decide what you want the whole group to cover, not to force each vocation into a single narrow label.
Which vocations should I pick?
Each vocation affects three connected parts of a character: the spells and abilities they can learn, their attribute growth, and their equipment options. That makes the choice more consequential than simply assigning a label. A party with complementary vocations has more than one way to contribute; a party built around one preference may be enjoyable too, but it leaves fewer distinct roles covered.
Square Enix lead producer Masaaki Hayasaka wrote in a PlayStation.Blog feature published September 3, 2024, that “Everyone in your party, your protagonist included, has a vocation. This determines what spells and abilities they’re capable of learning, how their stats will increase and the equipment they can use.” Use that as the basic checklist when comparing options: what can the vocation learn, how does it affect growth, and what equipment can the character use? There is no need to seek a hidden performance ranking before you choose.

Warrior and Martial Artist are examples of attacker vocations in the consulted walkthrough. The familiar Warrior, Priest and Mage lineup also gives the Warrior a clear attacking role. For a beginner, the practical decision is to choose an attacker you want to rely on for routine physical damage, rather than trying to compare hidden performance rankings that have not been established here.
Give healing a deliberate place in the lineup
Priest is the straightforward dedicated-healer choice in the conservative lineup. The walkthrough also lists Sage as a healer option. Monster Wrangler can contribute healing as well, but the producer’s description presents it as a vocation with a range of monstrous abilities, including both attacks and helpful heals. That makes it flexible; it does not mean you should assume it replaces a dedicated healer in every party or situation.
Use the third companion to add utility or flexibility
Thief, Merchant and Monster Wrangler are examples of utility choices in the walkthrough. If you choose Warrior and Priest for the first two companion roles, the third slot is a useful place to express a preference: take a utility vocation, choose Mage for the familiar balanced trio, or pick Monster Wrangler if you want the remake’s addition represented in the active group.

Keep the distinction between role and guarantee in mind. A vocation gives access to particular possibilities, but the available descriptions do not establish a universally optimal sequence of abilities or an exact damage, healing or survival advantage. Build around the kinds of contribution you want to have available, then adjust if the party’s needs become clearer as you play.

What does Monster Wrangler add?
Monster Wrangler is the remake’s added vocation. Square Enix lead producer Masaaki Hayasaka describes its abilities as including attacks that hit multiple enemies and helpful heals that can bring the party back from the brink. In other words, its appeal is breadth: it can contribute offensively and help with recovery instead of serving only one narrow party role.
That dual contribution makes Monster Wrangler a reasonable utility or flexible pick for a beginner who wants to try the new content. It is not evidence that the vocation is a mandatory choice, the strongest option, or a substitute for every other role. If you value a familiar setup, choose another utility vocation or the conventional Warrior, Priest and Mage combination. If you want the new vocation in your group, build the remaining slots to cover the roles you would otherwise rely on it to help fill.
Hayasaka’s September 3, 2024 PlayStation.Blog description specifically mentions monstrous abilities ranging from attacks that hit multiple enemies to helpful heals. That supports choosing the vocation for variety and flexible contributions. It does not provide a numerical comparison with other jobs, promise that it will outperform a specialist, or make it a requirement for a successful first run. Think of the Wrangler as an option that can touch more than one party need, then decide whether that flexibility fits your lineup.
How personalities affect a party
Personalities change how a character’s attributes rise at level-up. The consulted walkthrough describes each vocation as having baseline growth, with a personality shifting those growths positively or negatively. Personality is therefore a way to tune development over time, not a separate vocation or a replacement for choosing the roles your party needs.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFor a first run, do not let personality optimization delay party creation. The evidence here does not establish a single personality recipe that every beginner should use, nor does it provide specific personality-to-attribute values for comparison. A workable approach is to choose your vocations first, consider personalities as a later refinement, and avoid treating an imperfect early choice as a reason to restart or postpone the adventure.

- Temporary
When weighing a personality choice, remember that it affects growth as characters level; it does not change the party’s basic role coverage. A healer still needs to be part of your plan if you want a dedicated healer, and an attacker still needs to fill the damage role you selected. Since no universal personality pairing is established here, prioritize a lineup you understand and can use comfortably rather than spending the start of the game chasing an exact recipe.
Can you change vocations later?
Yes. According to the GameFAQs walkthrough consulted for these mechanics, supporting characters can change vocation at Alltrades Abbey once they reach level 20. The Hero cannot change vocation. A change sends the supporting character back to level 1 with experience reset and stats halved, while retaining learned spells and abilities.
This can support a later hybrid build: a character can keep learned abilities while beginning progression in a new vocation. The cost is a substantial temporary progression setback, so it is best treated as a considered option once you understand what your party is missing—not as mandatory preparation before choosing your starting companions.

Use a vocation change when there is a clear reason
- First identify a gap you actually want to address, such as needing a different kind of contribution from one supporting character.
- Consider whether the abilities already learned are valuable enough to carry into a new vocation.
- Factor in the return to level 1 and halved stats described by the walkthrough before making the switch.
- Keep the Hero’s fixed vocation in mind when planning changes; the option applies to supporting characters.
Because the switch has a leveling cost, beginning with a complementary party is useful even though it does not lock supporting characters into their original vocations forever.
That trade-off is why a class change is better viewed as a later build decision than a beginner obligation. The retained spells and abilities give you something to build on, but the reset and halved stats mean the character will need to progress again. If your current party is already covering the jobs you need, there is no reason to change a vocation simply because the option exists. Wait until you can name what you want the new combination to do.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.A simple decision process for your first party
- Keep the Hero in your plan. The Hero is part of the active group, which can hold up to four characters.
- Pick one companion to handle attacking. Warrior and Martial Artist are attacker examples; the conventional balanced lineup uses Warrior.
- Choose how you want healing covered. Priest is the dedicated-healer example in the familiar lineup; Sage is another option listed by the walkthrough. Monster Wrangler can also contribute healing.
- Use the last companion slot to express a preference. Consider Mage for the familiar balanced trio, a utility vocation such as Thief or Merchant, or Monster Wrangler for a flexible role and the remake’s new content.
- Do not over-optimize personalities before starting. They affect attribute growth at level-up, but the basic party decision is about role coverage.
- Revisit the plan later if needed. Supporting characters can change vocation at Alltrades Abbey at level 20, with the progression trade-off described above.
Before confirming the group at Patty’s Party Planning Place, do a quick coverage check. Can you identify the companion you expect to handle routine physical damage? Have you deliberately included a healer or decided how healing will be covered? Does the last slot give you something you want, such as spell-focused contribution, utility, or the Wrangler’s broader mix of attacks and healing? If your answers make sense to you, the party is ready. The choice is important, but it is not a demand for a perfectly optimized build.

Common beginner mistakes to avoid
- Searching for one mandatory best party. No single lineup is endorsed as optimal for every player. Use the role framework to make a choice that matches your preferences.
- Choosing companions without considering their jobs. Vocation affects learning, attribute growth and equipment access, so consider what each character adds to the group.
- Assuming Monster Wrangler must be included. It is the remake’s new vocation and offers both attacks and healing, but it is one flexible choice among several.
- Trying to perfect personalities before you begin. Personalities influence attribute growth, but they are not a reason to delay a workable first party.
- Changing vocation without accounting for the reset. A supporting character who switches returns to level 1 with halved stats, even though learned spells and abilities remain.
- Planning to change the Hero’s vocation. The walkthrough says the Hero cannot change vocation, so make starting plans with that restriction in mind.
- Assuming a flexible role covers every need. Monster Wrangler has both attack and healing abilities, but the official description does not establish that it replaces a specialist for every situation.
- Treating a class change as free experimentation. The option is available later, but the level and stat setback mean it is worth having a reason before switching.
Frequently Asked Questions
What’s a good starting party in Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake?
A familiar beginner lineup is the Hero with Warrior, Priest and Mage companions. It gives the group an attacker, a dedicated healer and a spell-focused companion. You can also use a role-first setup with an attacker, healer and utility vocation; neither is a mandatory best party.
Which vocations should I pick for my first playthrough?
Choose companions to cover the contributions you want: Warrior or Martial Artist as attacker examples, Priest or Sage for healing, and options such as Thief, Merchant or Monster Wrangler for utility. Vocation affects learnable spells and abilities, attribute growth and equipment access.
Is Monster Wrangler a must-have?
No. It is the remake’s added vocation and can contribute monster-derived attacks, including attacks that hit multiple enemies, as well as healing. That makes it a flexible choice, not a required or universally strongest party member.
Can the Hero change vocation at Alltrades Abbey?
No. The GameFAQs walkthrough says supporting characters can change vocation at Alltrades Abbey after reaching level 20, but the Hero cannot. A supporting character who changes returns to level 1 with experience reset and stats halved, while keeping learned spells and abilities.
Do I need to optimize personalities before choosing my party?
No. Personalities affect how attributes rise at level-up, shifting a vocation’s baseline growth, but the available guidance does not establish a single personality recipe every beginner should follow. Start with role coverage and treat personality as a refinement.
The Bottom Line
For a first run, choose the Hero plus three companions who cover attacking, healing and a role you enjoy. Warrior, Priest and Mage is a familiar balanced example; Monster Wrangler is an optional flexible addition with attacks and healing. Vocations and personalities shape development, and supporting characters can change vocations later at a progression cost—so make a sensible starting choice, not a perfect one.
