If the text in Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake is hard to follow, first check the text language in Misc. > System Settings > Language Settings. The English-language Square Enix FAQ documents English and Japanese text and voice options, but does not document an in-game font-size or UI-scaling control. Voice volume and battle speed can also be changed, but neither enlarges dialogue or menus.
Which settings can actually help?
It helps to separate three different problems: difficulty understanding the language, distraction from sound, and text that is physically too small on screen. The documented settings address the first two, plus the pace of combat. They do not establish that you can enlarge the game’s text.

- Text language: switch between English and Japanese in Misc. > System Settings > Language Settings. This can help if you read one of those languages more comfortably.
- Voice volume: adjust it in Misc. > Audio Settings, including setting it to zero. This changes spoken audio, not text size.
- Battle speed: normal, fast, and ultra-fast options change how quickly battles play. They do not enlarge text or dialogue.
- Switch 2 presentation: the free update adds an option to prioritize graphics or frame rate. Square Enix describes sharper and smoother presentation, not larger fonts.
The key point is that a setting can make the game more comfortable without making its letters bigger. Choose one according to the problem you are trying to solve.
Change the text language if comprehension is the problem
Where to find it
- Open the in-game menu and choose Misc.
- Select System Settings.
- Open Language Settings.
- Choose the available text and voice language option that suits you. Square Enix’s English FAQ documents English and Japanese selection.
If English is easier for you to read than Japanese, or the reverse, changing text language can reduce the effort required to follow menus and story dialogue. This is a language preference, not a display-size adjustment: it will not make the same language’s letters larger.

- DRAGON QUEST III HD-2D Remake is a stunning reimagining of the beloved masterpiece and narrative beginning to The Erdrick Trilogy – the first three games of the mainline DRAGON QUEST series. - A fully modernized remake of the original: Stunning HD-2D visuals fuse pixel art with 3D graphics, bringing players into the world of DRAGON QUEST III like never before, along with an improved and modernized UI, and other quality of life improvements.
- Traditional DRAGON QUEST style battles: A refined take on the classic turn-based battle system, featuring new animations, additional improvements such as an adjustable battle speed, an auto-battle setting, and more.

- Experience a timeless musical score: An immersive, authentic, and diverse musical composition that captures the timeless essence and magic of the DRAGON QUEST universe.
On Steam, the store listing reports interface and subtitle support for English, French, Italian, German, Spanish (Spain and Latin America), Simplified Chinese, Traditional Chinese, Japanese, and Korean. It lists full audio in English and Japanese. Those language details apply to the PC listing; do not assume that every console edition offers the same language menu. If you are choosing a language on a console, use the options shown in that version of the game rather than relying on the PC list.
Turn down voices if audio distracts you
Adjusting voice volume
- Open Misc. in the in-game menu.
- Choose Audio Settings.
- Lower Voices to your preferred level, or set the volume to zero to turn voices off.
Square Enix documents the zero-volume option in its English FAQ. It may suit someone who finds spoken lines distracting while reading, prefers to read at their own pace, or wants quieter play. It will not alter the text displayed in dialogue boxes, menus, or other parts of the interface. If your difficulty is seeing letters clearly, changing voices is not a substitute for a text-size control.

What the Switch 2 graphics option changes
Square Enix says a free Switch 2 update improves sharpness and smoothness and adds choices to prioritize graphics or frame rate. These choices change presentation priorities. The FAQ does not describe either option as a font-size, text-contrast, or UI-scaling control, so do not expect one to enlarge dialogue or menu text.

If the specific issue is that the letters are too small, the documented description does not show that the update resolves it. The FAQ does not establish whether a system-level accessibility feature can magnify this game, so check the current instructions for your hardware before relying on magnification as a workaround.

Battle speed is a pacing choice, not a readability mode
A Square Enix PlayStation Blog feature published on October 14, 2024 describes normal, fast, and ultra-fast battle speeds, as well as autonomous party tactics. These are combat options: they affect how quickly battles proceed or how party members act. They are not described as changing font size or dialogue presentation.
Faster battles may be useful if you want combat to move along more quickly, while autonomous tactics can change how much direct input your party requires. But increasing battle speed is not a way to give yourself more time to read story text. The feature article was published before the game launched, so it is useful for understanding those described features, not as a comprehensive list of every setting in every current version.

How to decide what to try
Use the symptom, rather than the word “readability,” to choose a setting. That avoids spending time on an audio or combat control when the problem is visual.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →- You understand the language poorly: try the text-language choice in Language Settings, using options available in your edition.
- Spoken lines interrupt your reading: reduce Voices in Audio Settings, including to zero if you want no voice audio.
- You want combat to move faster: choose a battle speed that suits you; it does not affect the size of text.
- You are on Switch 2 and want a different presentation priority: try the graphics or frame-rate option, while treating it as a sharpness or smoothness choice rather than text enlargement.
- The letters themselves are too small: the cited English FAQ does not document an in-game font-size or UI-scaling setting. Do not mistake language, volume, or battle speed for one.
Change one relevant option at a time, then check the same type of screen that was difficult to read. A language change is best judged on text; an audio adjustment is best judged while a voiced scene plays; and a battle-speed change is best judged in combat. This makes it easier to tell whether the chosen setting addressed the actual problem.

Why platform and edition details matter
Square Enix says the game’s content is the same across versions, while graphics differ according to platform specifications. Its FAQ also says physical and downloadable editions have no content differences, and that Steam and Microsoft Store editions are not physically available. Those statements concern content and distribution; they do not mean that every platform has identical technical options, language tables, or system-level accessibility features.
The Steam listing identifies the game as released on November 14, 2024, by Square Enix and ARTDINK. Its language information is specifically for Steam, and its system-requirements information is tied to the PC version. A PC language list or requirement should not be treated as evidence of what a console edition supports. Likewise, the Switch 2 update details apply to that platform’s update rather than proving that other versions have the same graphics choices.
When checking a setting, confirm the platform and edition you are actually playing, then look at the menu available in that version. If a desired language or accessibility option is absent, the documented details above do not establish that another edition will provide a larger font; they only show that settings and platform-specific details should not be conflated.
What is documented—and what is not
Square Enix’s English FAQ documents language selection, voice-volume adjustment, and the Switch 2 graphics/frame-rate choice. Its description does not document an in-game control for font size or UI scale. That is a limit of what the FAQ establishes, not proof that no later update, platform feature, or system-level workaround exists.
The available platform details also do not establish whether every device’s magnification or accessibility tools work with this game, whether they crop the image, or how they affect handheld and television play. Verify any proposed system-level workaround against current instructions for your specific device before depending on it. Without that platform-specific confirmation, the most accurate answer is that the cited game settings can change language, voice volume, combat pacing, and—on Switch 2—graphics or frame-rate priority, but do not document a control that enlarges text.
